Thanks Bill. How often have you had Montezuma's revenge? How do you protect yourself?

Hi Ron, I have only had it one time in 17 years. I went into one of those resturants where it always had a big buffet of food and never any people. Never again. If the place is empty, I don´t go in.

Hi Sistah, Where I lived in Chapala, my fee was about 13,000 pesos a year. That´s about $650 US per year. I did some videos on other gated communities and their fees were about $300 US per month. Whatever right.

I am an expat and I live in Chapala, I never understood why expats feel they need to live in a gated community, isolated from the rest of the people, this area is not really that dangerous. In my opinion a gated community is not that necessary for this area. Gated communities tend to attract more thieves. Just live on a normal street in a normal house, as long as you have deterrence like a wall and bars on your doors and windows you will probably be ok. Use common sense and make your home "look" difficult to get into and more than likely the thieves will go to an easier target. We have been here downtown in Chapala for over 10 years and have never been broken into. If you get to know and respect your Mexican neighbors they will look out for you, that has been our experience. Thousands of expats live in normal Mexican neighborhoods here and don't experience break ins.

Thanks, Bill. Looking forward to getting rid of my car. When my adult kids come down to visit me they can rent cars, otherwise I will take your advice; walk, taxi, or take buses. My second biggest expense in US is car related; gas, insurance, car payments, maintenance… Can’t wait to avoid gated communities… hahaha…

Howdy John, Your message showed up 2 days ago, but I couldn´t get to it in my RU-vid panel. Today it shows up. I do enjoy having a car, but I only use it for very short trips, like one mile to the store and back. When I was in Guadalajara, if a trip was going to be more than a mile, I wouild use UBer. That way you don´t have to worry about accidents, you can have a beer or two, and, you don´t have to worry about parking. Thanks for watching, Bill

Hi Bill, Will you be selling your house in Chapala? Are you going back to Chapala or is Guadalahara your preference?
@BillDallasLewis

I Daniel, that´s Teresa´s house, not my house. I´m traveling a lot now making videos and I will most likely do that for the rest of my life, so most likely I might live in a different place every two the three years. There are so many great places in Mexico, I want to try Many. Best, Bill

Hi Bill, Thanks for the info on the gated communities. I was wondering when you say you were robbed.. was it at gunpoint/ any home invasions? or were you referring to burglary?
@BillDallasLewis
@BillDallasLewis 2 года назад
Hi Zenmaiden. All was good, they took some stuff that was important to me off of my back porch. The neighbors across the street built a brand new home, but they live in Reno, Nevada. People broke into their place and took TVs and computers. What ever. Best, Bill

@@BillDallasLewis Good to know it was burglary, no one gets hurt. Thanks again for making the comparison videos. Bring out some valid points about gated i may not have considered.. isolation, not close to town.. etc. Please consider making a viedo for us on on driving in Mexico, and safety, where is Safe" and where is not as a general rule, so to speak.

Hey Bill. Are most of the gated communities located on the north side of the main carretera and farther from the lake?
@BillDallasLewis
@BillDallasLewis 2 года назад
Howdy Doc, Our gated community was only about 2 blocks from the lake, but most of the others are like you said, on the north side of the main carretera and farther from the lake.

Gated communities give you a false sense of security because entrance guards can easily be bribed for info.
