There’s next to nothing left of what’s in this film, some of it is barely recognisable, really interesting footage, makes you want to go back in time and have a walk about.
Lived in Gateshead until 1956 - the High Street looks much different than I remember - I was 8 years old, when we moved to Denmark - my father being Danish - am now 74. But still have lovely memories from my school time - All Saints School with miss Conway.
I vaguely remember when Gateshead was like this before they changed it and before the civic centre was built. I do recall walker terrace and going to a wedding at St Joseph's church, and my Dr was at 5 Walker Terrace , my dad grew up in Warwick St xxx
What a fantastic piece of history. There can't be many areas that were covered on film to this extent in the 1960s. I would have just been a child on the bus but it all looks familiar.
Looking at the part built Trinity Square shopping complex on the left of the road at 2:12 I would date this footage as around 1965. Trinity Square opened in 1967 and was demolished in 2010. I always thought it was an eyesore! They built some really awful buildings in Gateshead in the 60's, St. Cuthberts Village etc!
wow I've worked in gateshead town centre for 34 years and the only buildings I recognised were mainly the terrible 1960s ones, what a mess they have made of it and continue to make of it. looks like there were some nice buildings there at one time, very few left
Nice to see the railings and greenery on Durham Road opposite Whitehall Road and Hartington Street - just as I remember from childhood visits to my Gran in the sixties. And what's there now? A completely pointless flyover. The traffic planners very nearly destroyed Gateshead town centre - the Metro Centre did the rest.
Fascinating stuff. I always notice the names of shops when I'm in a high street. Bradley's, Dawson's, Jackson's, Elliott's, Walron's - do any of these still exist? You see fewer and fewer English-named shops with each passing year, sadly. Black and white is a tough psychological barrier to overcome. It makes everything look ancient, prehistoric. But in reality if this was in colour, people would be surprised by how familiar everything seems. The cars have changed, obviously, but apart from that, life carried on then quite similarly to now. Videotape was expensive back then and most people weren't able to film very much material. It unsurprisingly wouldn't occur to anyone to film ordinary scenes of daily life, such as driving around the streets. But this is the kind of material that is really captivating when we look back and try to remember/understand what everyday life was like then.
Also my grandad's brothers shop 'J Cranston' jewellers - his son took over later, he has now retired with no one to take over the business it is no longer there either :-(
What I've learnt is literally everyone was crap at driving, then again the examination must of been abysmal. Also a 3 lane bypass going up High Street. Cool video of our home town.
God how the roads look a lot more calmer those days today its pure bedlam rather go back ,then have it now ,could laugh when driver said oh a lot of cops is it a police state , what would he say about todays coppers I wonder 🤔 thanks so much for the clip 😊
You know, it's really sad. That was the beginning of the end for Gateshead town centre, when they made it easier to get into Newcastle, thus missing out Gateshead completely. :-(
In order to get to Newcastle a couple of minutes faster, they demolished half the town centre - including the Essoldo cinema, which was a fabulous chunk of Edwardian architecture.
The sooner the bombsite called Gateshead town centre is totally demolished the better They demolished the only building that put the town on the map and replaced it with a Tesco You couldn't make it up Still that's decades of an unchallenged labour council for you
It looks like it shows the building of the 'Get Carter' Car park. Good one. The guy would turn in his grave if he knew they still haven't got it right with the roads, 60 years on.
Looks very familiar. I can name almost all of the cars on the road. Cars all look about the same, these days. They probably had to wait for a year and a half, to find a day when it wasn't raining.
See driving habits for some haven't changed at all. Still people on the roads like that now. Tailgating, cutting each other up, no indicators. Nice to see Newcastle end of tyne bridge before the central motorway was built.
That was great and didn't notice that waste of time flyover wasn't there, I must have been about 5. I think I can explain all the cops though. Trucks carrying used bank notes were transported at speed and by road right up past Davy Roll {I don't think it was called that then} but it went on for years and years, even in the eighty's and possibly the nineties.. They put cops out all along the route there was about one every 200 feet!, The money would have been untraceable as it was just all old. Great video, I have made some of the same mistakes lol
Gateshead born and Bred. 1960, Hector street. Sight of Metro station now. Id guess this footage is 1968-69. I glimpsed my House at Lychgate ct. 1968-69 was when the Planners destroyed Gateshead. The Multi- story monstrosity was started in 69 i recall. Then they pulled 5 Blocks of Chandless estate to run the vile flyover thru. A stake in the heart thru Gateshead. The planners and councillors who approved it should have been shot. They wreaked Gateshead and its never recovered!
Plenty of coppers because their station wasn’t too far away on Swinburne Street, most of my driving lessons were in and around Jackson Street, High West Street passing Shepherds of Gateshead, onto Bensham Road then Rectory Road drop off home 😁
At 4:49 the Hedge on the left has gone as the road cuts through there. www.google.com/maps/@54.9606353,-1.6028513,3a,75y,340.99h,87.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s8UknYDH8-lixW_J-iTPbbw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 At 4:57 The church is still there but all buildings past that are gone as its now the Interchange. www.google.com/maps/@54.9611872,-1.6029963,3a,75y,331.33h,93.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1suUVBkIFispbzg7l8NBJy3w!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 Too much to list but the roundabout which is where the end of the flyover ends on your way to Newcastle is good to see as I never knew thats the way it used to be. Brilliant upload thanks.
😅if you think this is chaotic try driving the same route around Gateshead and Newcastle today what with bus routes, one ways, cycle only and clean air zones , Mark my words , People will abandon gateshead and Newcastle city centers, its already started , Welcome to 2023 its like a third world , Ps the iconic Tyne bridge is in a shocking condition
@@matthewsmith2787 Your thinking of Gateshead town center? Gateshead is a huge area? Look on map and there is some lovely places in it. Where you live?
