Hiking the Wainwrights - S4-Ep06: Sca Fell & Slight Side
It may not be the highest mountain but it certainly has all the personality that its bigger brother, Scafell Pike, is lacking. From Slight Side the views were obscured for the entire ridge to the summit but that didn't take anything away from this walk; clag can be so atmospheric, especially on this fell, especially around the heart-stopping Deep Ghyll! Watching your lovely day has given me a lovely day. I walked the dog out in the amazing rolling hills and Oast Houses of the Kent and East Sussex border and it was gorgeous - glorious morning full of sunshine but not a patch on the Lake District views. I'm blessed to be in the beautiful county of Kent but I can't help looking all the way up to the Lake District with more than a touch of awe.

Me and my daughter have been from WHA car park along the terrace about to Catcove back and then back down past the two tarns and back to the pub. She loved it. Kudos to you for trying for accuracy - was a bit sceptical as Hurricanes are not usually classed as a bomber - possibly a fighter-bomber , but you were not wrong, another two young lives (Polish in this instance) lost on a British mountainside. My stamping ground is the Cheviots and although they are a lot lower - they are still littered with air crash sites. A sombre reminder of the price that earlier generations from all over Europe have paid for our present freedom.

Did Scafell and Symonds Knott in 2017. Ascended via Foxes Rake after dropping down at Mickledore after summiting Scafell Pike. Great views on that day ⛰️⛰️⛰️

My first ascent of Scafell was by this route, though I returned via Foxes Tarn, Cam Sout and Throstlegarth. It was clear and bright throughout but still barren and empty: I saw no-one until Scafell summit. The ridge from Slight Side onwards was glorious. My second was via Lord's Rake, for the thrill of doing Lord's Rake. I intended a third, in order to tackle the West Wall Traverse and Deep Gill, but personal circumstances intervened to deprive me. I'm already looking forward to your summer video of that!

Agreed Glenn, Scafell is a far better suited.mit than its big brother. You'll have to return though and walk from Brackenclose: Lord's Rake, West Wall Traverse & Deep Gill. 🙂👍

Looks like you got the exact same cloud I encountered when I did Sca Fell and Slight Side for the first time last Summer, I approached the two from Seathwaite and I navigated those two mountains plus Lord's Rake all in the mist. It seems the mist gives cliff faces and crags a bit of a wider berth so you can a see a bit more- which is most useful around the whole Mickledore / Lord's Rake area.

Thanks for shepherding us up through your own ‘ Little Alba ‘ right in your back yard . Dragon ‘ s Tail in winter slumber and the strips of snow like icing along the approach to Scafell Pike are inspiring to see . The back door to Mordor looked haunting as usual . thx , kev

One of my favourite fells. Walked onto Sca Fell a few times but never the 'Pike'. The only time I didn't have views was when I took the wife up when near the top the clag and rain came in. She still hasn't forgiven me! I usually start and finish in Boot and walk via Burnmoor Tarn. Tough route to walk up from there so the route via Stoney and Eel Tarn is preferred. I'll be in the area at the end of March so knees and weather permitting - 'a hiking I will go' 🤣

When I used to go hiking in The Lakes with my Dad and brother I always baa-ed at the sheep. It makes no sense whatsoever but yet I just couldn't help myself! ;)

Thanks for the memories of a boggy ramble from The Woolpack to Wasdale Head and back through shoulder height bracken! Along with a 17 mile round trip from The Bower House Inn up to Harter Fell and back. Delirium definitely set in on both walks! Powered by wine gums!

Do you wear a satellite beacon in case you become injured and need to be life flighted out via helicopter.? Watching from Arizona mountains. Your mountains are so different than in the US. It certainly looks like it can only sustain sheep. Takes a rugged people to carve out a life in that landscape.

in england, if you just shout for help, somebody will find you. it's not as vast as other places. no scorpions or rattle snakes, there's just sheep, badgers and foxes.

Great video Glen. I remember doing a similar route up to Slight Side and Scafell, except on the way down, I picked up a path off the West side of Scafell and headed towards Hardrigg Gill, then onto Burnmoor Tarn and Eel Tarn and back down to the Woolpack. Definitely soggy underfoot towards Eel Tarn.

.....Good Afternoon, I have watched your earliest released Hiking Vlogs, some Road Trips and all your Wild Camping videos, and currently S1-Ep3 Hiking the Wainwrights, all highlight the spectacular scenery, photography, the great British weather extremes, and your trusted companion Finn, however, just an observation rather than a criticism is that some videos contain far too much narration throughout them ??, although Series 1 Hiking the Wainwrights is over a year ago, maybe this observation has curtailed with the more recent, up to date video's, thanks Michael.....

Did outward bound in 76 at Eskdale, love upper Eskdale, it has a magical atmosphere, my favourite place in the lakes! Love this video, makes me want to dig out my boots, I wonder if my hips and knees are up for it.?!😂

There are a couple of free phone apps that are useful, a garmin device such as the instinct watch and ofcourse, a map and compass. Take all 3…..and a small power bank for your phone. Learn map and compass navigating from RU-vid. Research what gear you need for your day hike, remember you need to be self sufficient if you’re going solo. Then just start small and build your skills and confidence over time. There really is no better feeling than being out there on your own

@@ceepee5565 Spare socks Spare laces Multi tool /swiss knife First aid kit small Compass Map Power bank Whistle Sunglasses (even in winter) Sun cream Flask Pen/pencil Glasses/spare contacts Hand gel Head torch Mini towel Goggles (if winter) Vaseline Binoculars (mini) Cap or woolly hat Walking poles These are all things I take on an 8 hour day hike. If I’m remote and it’s cold I take a small vac packed emergency shelter which I’ve never had to use but could be a life saver if you break an ankle. Most of the above stuff can be bought really cheaply, you don’t need to go mad, just consider each item see if it’s relevant to you.

Stayed at Wha House in 2009. The car park is on the small side and must get busy at certain times of the year. More room at the Woolpack who charge £5 for the day. Visited Eskdale last autumn. The Boot Inn serves up some excellent scran. Managed a few decent images.

Great watch. Thankyou for sharing and the effort that goes into these vlogs. The big question~how did you get to Eskdale? Over the pass or drive round? I hate that pass having nearly come a cropper on the two times I have used. I hitch hike now for those that are braver than me ! I’ll walk and climb anything but not that pass. 😂. Didn’t know stony tarn existed having dropped off much earlier. In boggy conditions use 360 dry socks with liner sock underneath. The gate is the gate to the car park by the pub ~ as I have seen a bar across it on a few occasions. I’m not there much so could be wrong. I did Lord’s Rake a few times when the chock stone was in place. Not a rake to be in the snow and ice - stay clear. About to watch your next video. I hope it gets a bit drier soon !

Have you ever done or considered doing the Cumbria Way? I think with your videography skills, it would be an epic series. And it's a relatively low level walk so very unlike hiking the Wainwrights. 🤞

I remember taking my 10 year old daughter up harter fell. She was tired near the top but she managed to make it to the top. I wondered if it was determination but it was actually the packet of Oreo’s I said I’d give her when she got to the top 😂😂. Still fab memories

Absolutely gorgeoues countryside. I enjoy the sheep too, I have a Great Pyrenees. I dont notice any livestock guardian dogs. Are there not any predators to the sheep?

Those herdies, art and form to me peeping over the rocks. I would have snapped these with my mobile, I couldn't walk past , although I know you need a good camera focus like yours. . Then the mist again, like another time and place, enveloping you in with all the history that has gone before, how the earth was and still is. From 38.11 onwards for a while, the visuals are so neolithic . I think the mist releases strength of the place, the rocks and chasms, nothing has changed there for a millennia.

This video has been great to watch. You see so many people showing you either Lords Rake or Foxes Tarn Gully as the way to or from Scafell, so it's been nice to see an alternate route if the others are too bad to use. I'm very much like yourself in that I much prefer a circular route or an A to B route for my hikes and not retracing my steps

I did Scafell and Slight Side for my 40th last August. Via Great Moss, Cam Spout and Foxes Tarn and returning to Eskdale the same way as you. It was the most epic adventure ever. But getting off took forever! Was so glad to get back to the campsite at the end - luckily hubby came down earlier and had prepared a feast for the rest of us. Lovely to see this again - over the bog and all too 🤣 wonderful video as ever Glen. Helping me to enjoy the fells while I take care of hubby with his broken leg! Xxxx ⛰️⛰️⛰️⛰️

Yes agree, great walk and the Foxes Tarn scramble route you took, makes it a nice round trip and is the way I did it over 60 years ago. One of those walks where it is possible. if you are lucky, to see no other walkers.

Brilliant stuff - as always. Just like being out with a mate. I did that route late last year on a clear day and as you pointed out the views are stunningly beautiful. I also recall that the walk is lot more arduous than it appears on the map!

I don’t think there’s anything on regular telly I can be bothered watching for a full hour right now, but I’m happy to watch two hours of your videos back-to-back. I’m hoping to move to Cumbria in the next couple of weeks (solicitors be damned), and will be able to get out 1-2 times a month, rather than 1-2 times a year. Can’t wait.

We were up on Sca Fell (and down to Slight Side) and contoured back round, last summer.. it was a glorious sunny day - there were exactly 5 people on the summit of Sca Fell (and we were 3 of that total).. looked across to Scafell Pike - 000s of people in a big long snake...

Glenn, loved the episode! As soon as you said in your last episode that Scafell was next, I knew it was going to be a good one! I was expecting you to go through Eskdale, up Fox's Tarn to the summit then onto Slight side. But I'm extremely happy with the route you did, as I rate Scafell over the bigger one (only just!). Thanks for continuing with all you do to bring us a fabulous episodes full of waffle, views and fin-meister! Oh and I thought your night walking episode was great! Obviously lacked the views, but was a really good insight for people who are thinking about walking at night for the first time!
