Love the way she belts out the incipit. Medieval chant was not for the faint of heart; you don't fill a cavernous stone church mildly strumming an acoustic guitar ( or lute as the case may be).

Pretty much the opposite is true, sounds that would be gone in an instant in normal spaces are picked up and reverberated for many seconds in spaces like this. To the extent that it informed the styles of some of the foremost sacred composers of the time, since complicated polyphony would be almost incomprehensible in a reverberant space compared to homophony. And you can hear that even when the ensemble sing quietly, they are still filling the space. I assume you're making some swipe at modern worship music, and I'd agree that I prefer this, but "not for the faint of heart"? It's not like these pieces were written to be belted at full forte throughout.

When I was 12 I studied violin playing and in a junior string orchestra we played Piae Cantiones songs. Can't remember exact songs but perhaps this finely sung Gaudete was in repertoire. We even participated in a national youth happening and got to play on tv for a news clip. Fond memories and as older very much appreciate this kind of soothing religious music.

Wow, they’re pronouncing Classical Latin and not ecclesial latin, I’ve never heard that before in chant!
@grzegorzgryc3586
@grzegorzgryc3586 5 лет назад
In fact, it's the standard Polish Latin pronunciation :-) Basically it's very close to the 1st-2nd century except e.g. "ci/ce-" like sounds we pronounce "Cicero" as "tsitsero" although "tchitschero" would probably make more sense (at least for Italians). Generally we follow an old German (Frankish?) tradition but our vowels and consonants are far closer to the Italian, so it sounds quite well. The medieval Polish Latin was far "worse"" because of a lot of softened consonants, a more classical pronunciation was reestablished in XVII-XVIII century. BTW, off topic. Some Polish guys make a really interesting job related to the pronunciation. E.g. here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c5I2XGj41c8.html Their French could have been better but it's one of the very, very few cases the French 16th century pronunciation of "je bois" or "Arbois" (-we, not -wa) is preserved... The only one case I remember now is Jordi Savall (Capella Reial de Catalunya). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rxlwCTOuTSs.html Normally Tourdion is simply awful...

This in fact would be the equivalent of a hymn or carol for the era. Chant is something quite different. Chant is free flowing and sung as if you were speaking the words, this clearly has a rhythm to it. There is also a difference if you look at the manuscript, chant had 4 lines and popular pieces as performed by singers, etc had 5 lines as this piece did in its original.

Men...3 tenors and two bass? I can only see 4 men and one of those is the conductor! However, we see very little of the men singing so perhaps one of them is very short? I wonder why it is that the camera man focuses on the ladies and virtually ignores the men?I LOVE this. Not to everyone's taste of course, but to each his own. IMO a good performance by this Polish group.

Is the tune Dorian or Aeolian? I could figure it out on my guitar.
@sb6678
@sb6678 4 года назад
Buck Lilli Æolian. In the Carol book Piæ Cantiones it is written in Æolian mode. Both Dorian and Æolian modes are quite similar and tricky to tell apart; but there are subtle differences between the two, such as the dominant in the mode. Another clue is the accidental in the final 'de' of GauDEte. There would not be such an accidental in the Dorian

Invece non è pronunciato bene! Per esempio.. Si dice "Maria Virgine" non "Maria Virghine"!!!
@grzegorzgryc3586
@grzegorzgryc3586 5 лет назад
E coretto.
@davideaufiero889
@davideaufiero889 5 лет назад
@grzegorzgryc3586
@grzegorzgryc3586 5 лет назад
For instance, in Slavic and German-speaking countries, "C" commonly receives the value of /ts/ before "E" and "I", and speakers pronounce "G" in all positions hard, never as /d͡ʒ/ (English "J") . (See also Latin regional pronunciation and Latin spelling and pronunciation: Ecclesiastical pronunciation.)". Despite of (papal) recommendations from the end of XIX / beginning of the XX century, the ecclesiastical pronunciation "alla italiana" was never adopted in Poland and it's considered strange. Sometimes it's really funny, e.g. John Paul II used the "italian" pronunciation in Vatican but in Poland he used the Polish one :-) I'm used to the "Italian" pronunciation but in Poland I always use the "Polish" one. Otherwise nobody understands :-) Or, in some cases, one may be considered as a total idiot, e.g. if a Pole pronounces Genesis (Book of Genesis) "alla italiana", like in English, sure, he must be a mega dumb...
@davideaufiero889
@davideaufiero889 5 лет назад
