Today’s aspiring songwriters and lovers were so dirt poor that at times they struggled to even feed themselves. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were down and out before the joined Mick Fleetwood…Just between them, they couldn’t even afford a bed frame and slept on a mattress on the floor. as it turns out, that would be a key memory years later… after they had sold millions of records with one of the biggest bands of the 70s, Fleetwood Mac,. Penned by the enchanted songstress Stevie Nicks, today’s track is a bittersweet, nostalgic look back at the days before her meteoric rise to fame Gypsy barley missed the top 10 but epitomizes what Fleetwood Mac is all bout. The song begs the question was she better off as a struggling songwriter than a global superstar? It’s a rags to riches throwback track, that comes with some other unexpected tie ins as well… including the tragic death of a close friend and an ill-advised marriage to that friends husband that happened for all the wrong reasons. The story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us.
Today we are rewinding back to the early 80s to give an in-depth look at song that just missed the Top 10 on the Hot 100… but really should have been so much bigger. It’s such a beautiful representation of this band with it’s intricate harmonies, sublime guitar work and precise percussion. A Hallmark of one of the greatest bands ever. It’s Fleetwood Mac with the Stevie Nicks’ penned Gypsy, from their 1982 album Mirage.
So as we’ll see in few minutes, Gypsy is a bittersweet, throwback track that has Nicks longing for her days as a struggling songwriter… before Fleetwood Mac and the complicated mess of becoming a superstar. Back in those days, it was just her and Lindsey Buckingham living on minimum wage, fighting tooth and nail to make their mark in the music business. The two were of more than just aspiring musicians, they were also romantic partners… although their relationship was a volatile one. To support them financially, while Buckingham labored over his musical craft, Nicks worked a series of cleaning and waitress jobs. They didn’t pay much. Dirt poor, the two used to sleep on a mattress without a bed frame, and often could only afford to divvy up a slice of pizza for dinner.
These were trying times for the pair. Constant financial and relationship stress… at one point, probably more than once, Stevie was ready to quit music altogether. But their perseverance landed them a 1973 studio album credited to the duo as Buckingham Nicks. However, it didn’t do much to improve their prospects. The record was all but ignored by their label Polydor and received little promotion. Subsequently, it bombed. And the two were dropped from the label shortly after. Their dreams dashed, it was back to the drawing board. So Stevie and Lindsey continued on their previous arrangement.

We NEED a re-release of Buckingham Nicks! It's such a brilliant album. When I went to see the recording of Lindsey Buckingham's Soundstage special in 2003, Stevie was there to do a couple songs and someone yelled out "Frozen Love!!" She sang a couple lines from the song and the roof about blew off the place. Then she stopped and said that's all she could remember. 😆I'm not sure either of them realize what a gem that song and album are for the fans.

Years later, VH1 on South African satellite dish channel, woudl also play most 80s music to death, others that should have been there, never featured. Anyway,it is what it is. Only people born in early 70s teeagers in 80s, will fully appreciate the great music of those years, maybe some "boomers" will also still love it. Music like that died in the early 90s, though very few persevered and stayed evergreen

I'm shocked that this song wasn't as big of a hit I've always thought it was. To me, it seems it's always been around on radio, old tv cd compilations. It's so beautiful, full of emotion, not to mention that guitar at the end there. It's probably a perfect song! I love it so much! And they've only had ONE #1 hit?! Craaaaaazy!

Of all Fleetwood Mac's beloved songs, "Dreams", "Go Your Own Way", "You Make Loving Fun", "Don't Stop", and more. "Gypsy" with it's crisp sounding of the drums, nice studio work; is the one song that leaves you wanting more and simply the trance is over when it's over you are over back to real life. "Hold Me" which also has a unique flavor for a pop song, "Rhiannon", another haunting beautiful piece, and oh let's not forget "Landslide". What musicianship and song crafter Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac as a group were!

I grew up when all these songs were readily available on radio stations. Back when you had to hope to catch your favorite artists on the radio, unless you were fortunate enough to have the album. Even if the station didn’t come in well & you could barely hear the music w/ all the static…… Casey Kasem was a great show. Your channel provides so much more content and history. In those days, if it had been a choice between Dick Clark, Casey Kasem or you (on tv or radio), my choice would have been you, hands down. (In those days, you weren’t able to record shows on your VCR or DVR, you had to make a choice. You had to turn the tv or radio on early, or you might miss the songs you were hoping to hear. What a great job you do! Thanks for sharing. I always look forward to your posts.

Gypsy definitely brings the feels ... and definitely one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac tracks, among many! Lindsey and Stevie brought the magic and from there, Christine and the others blossomed, inspirring the band to even higher levels over their careers. I'm going to guess, you've heard the album Lindsey and Christine put out together in 2017. Sure, it's Fleetwood Mac without Stevie but, it's solid ... which just says to me, Lindsey was the real magician in "The Mac".

@@ProfessorofRock I found this quote and I was wrong! It was Mick Fleetwood who played the fish-faced alien!: “I always loved Star Trek,” Fleetwood, 67, said. “(On The Next Generation), I played an Antedean - half-man, half-fish. I said, ‘I’ll shave my beard off if you promise me that I get to beam down or beam up - at least one of those things. Either up or down, you’ve got to promise me that it’s in the script.’ And they do - they beam me down into the ship. So I shaved my beard off and I had a lot of fun." As I recall, he does get beamed aboard with another Antedean, and it's such a silly-looking character it's one of the funnier scenes on Star Trek. Knowing that the song was actually written in the 70s did explain a lot; what an awesome and haunting song. It's a shame that Nicks couldn't let go of her hatred for Buckingham, and that she basically held the band hostage in the past few years, refusing to tour or record with them unless they fired him from the band. This was SIX MONTHS before Music Cares so another lie from Stevie. Also just happened to coincide with the release of Buckingham McVie after Stevie unilaterally declared there would never be another FM album (after dragging her heels about one for 15 years years).
