For a young man to play this song at all gives us hope that future generations denounce anymore wars. His rendition is first class, well done Gavin and thank you.
One of the most profound songs ever written, and I would not be able to walk past this young gentleman's rendition of it without stopping and singing along with him. Always brings a tear to my eye.
Great performance. The sad, mad, and humorous irony is that I was singing Green Fields - during my OEF-I(Iraq) and OEF-A(Afghanistan) Combat Rotations. I sung this 52 times for the 52 souls that we lost in combat. My own little send off to them.
I’m a retired Marine, I feel guilty you and my sons had to go and fight what we should have been allowed to finish. Thank you for your bravery. Semper Fi
I am so sorry to see people just walking by. Your performance was special. We lost our great granddad in 1918. I just wish people could stop and pay respect for their choice to live in a free world. Bless you and what a tribute to those that fell. xxx
Just shows the indifference of people show by walking past, to busy in their lives to look at the big picture this is why wars will keep happening again and again.when will man kind learn
Amazing. There is something about the people moving about behind you unawares that illustrates the saddest lyrics in the song: it’s all happened again and again and again.
@@fulanichild3138 Yet he sings about the very thing they will one day understand and for some countries they understand to late. Today it is Putin and Ukraine. The ones who walked passed will moan about inflation. Give praise for those who die fighting tyranny. Plus those who die because of it. So this is for you Mr Putin. You are the new hitler.
This is an amazing version. Willie McBride is buried in Authuille Military Cemetery alongside my Great Grandfather John James McCarron. Both men serving in 9th Bn (The Tyrone's) Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and part of the 36th Ulster Division. Forever remembered. Lest we Forget. ❤
@@kevincomery1634 Thank you. Here's to keeping their memory and sacrifice alive. “When you go Home, tell them of us and say, For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today”
Bless you Denise for keeping your Great Gandad's and your family's history alive. For what it's worth, my maternal grandfather Ralph Kell joined the 13th Battalion First AIF in Sydney (Aust) in 1914 and went ashore at Gallipoli on the first day. He survived that campaign and then went to France with the Australian 3rd Brigade. My paternal grandfather joined the Royal Navy in 1912 (yes a professional). He served in the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) as well and later in the North Sea. Both these blokes came back pretty broken after WW1, but were both called up from the reserves in 1939 and came back after WW2 even more broken. Now we have another generation of broken returned servicemen/women. I am a veteran myself and can tell you that a few medals and a pension don't fix what goes on in many veterans' heads. We need to do better than this, grow up and just stop fighting each other. I hope my kids will not have to deal this nonsense again but as we all know, history tends to rhyme. Take care.
As an American I only heard this song recently. I must say I keep listening over and over again at different versions and this is one of the best. Beautiful. Thanks
The most beautiful song, sung beautifully by this young man. I am full of tears, partly by the ignorance of the people who walk by, their lives must truly be void of good. Long may songs and singers like this young man exist, my life would be less without them.
First of all , that was fantastic. Great voice and so well done. It’s so sad to see all the people just passing by. Not listening just passing by. All those boys died for nothing indeed. Again and again and again and again. It’s like the street sweeper was there to just sweep away their memories, dedication and their lives. Too many Willie McBrides are lost forever. Thank you for bringing their lives back if just for an instant. They are not forgotten nor will they ever be.
I agree with many,i was disgusted with those who walked past, Im not irish, never been there, never heard the song before,i was moved,a wonderful performance, I now know the origins of the song, for some one so young to be able to breathe such passion into the song is amazing, and hopefully he will be able to communicate with the young, the futility of war, Ive now shared it with many people who appreciate it, He would have stopped me in my tracks, well done young man,i applaude you
This is one of the best versions I have heard of this song - and I've heard a lot. I waited for the song to start at the beginning and as soon as he started singing I was hooked. Absolutely stunning. How have I missed this for so long???
Absolutely OUTSTANDING I am crying listening over and over again, no wonder our Nation is a wreck now so many uneducated humans walk and live our streets that wouldn't even b choice if it wasn't for all of the Brave strangers standing strong together and loyal to fight for a even a flicker of hope for the rest to live on! It's hurts me & very scary how even the education system have changed now, not even learning the Lords prayer but other religions taught makes me sick! God bless the kids of the future 🙏 Well done and honeslty wow what a phenomenal talent you have 🥹🧡
Can’t believe the number of people pushing past him without even a glance☹️Well done young man Eric Bogle himself would be proud of you for your rendition of his song👏👏👏
People don't give a bollox no more pal they only want there fancy clothes cars fines etc make me sick weren't for people like those brave men we would not have our freedom
Have a store in the French Quarter in New Orleans, and the vast majority of tourists stop and listen for a minute or two when a sidewalk singer is this good. Was amazed how people behind him hand absolutely no interest in their hurry to go buy something.
The guys is brilliant. If you watch this one day and you see yourself walking past without understanding what this song means as you look down at your mobile phones. Take time please to think he is doing what you lot did not. He showed respect. I wish I had heard him, I would have given him my time, and an applause. Well Gavin as an ex soldier I salute you. WELL DONE. As do all veterans, plus your guitar sounds as you do amazing.
CT, USA here on Memorial Day weekend. The refrain goes way back, and I would have to stop an listen. It infuriates me that people just walk past and not imagine how the, Lost Generation, met their fate, and how they are able to walk past like the past was nothing. Always remember.
@@susanclark9089 As an ex service man of 24 years I thank you for your reply. In the immortal words Lest we forget. I am always reminded of a famous world war 1 general. We learn from history only that we repeat it. I wish you well and all the best.
Well performed young man, I’m a great fan of Eric Bogle, he’s written and performed some great anti war songs as well as comic songs, Green fields of France was originally called No mans land.
Wow, What a sublime performance. It's such a great song, everytime I hear it, tears come to my eyes. But I never thought the song would have such a great performance, just on the street. Who wouldn't go to a concerthall to hear this version… Gavin, stay singing for ever!
Lot of chat about who wrote the tune, it was Eric Bogle and he is Scottish. He's also laughing cause he registered it as Green Fields In France and No Mans Land. Coined it in. Doesnt take away from this young lad, great version. ❤
Beautiful song, deserves two minutes of silence from those in the audience for those who made the ultimate sacrifice and for those still serving their country proud to remain strong and free. Lest we forget 🇨🇦
Passers by; as if this song and this singer never existed? Put down your phones and listen for just a moment. It could make a difference. Thanks Gavin.
@gonootropics You are absolutely right about that. Unfortunately, they didn't scan the audience in this video one time. I've never been to "Dublin City" but that is a visit I would like to make. I suspect that positioning of these various singers has something to do with pecking order. The longer you've been there and the better you are the better position you get. This guy had an important song but what looks like a horrible place to sing it. Thanks.
You deserve a place among people like Johny Cash, Christy Moore, Kris Kristofferson etc, the did not get there fame for free, but in the end the got there. I cried for the people that walked past you with there phones. 🤠 Love to see you got 676 K subscribers you deserve that. 👶
Would love to hear a studio version. RIP Young Willie McBride. To those of you committing on the people walking by, what you don't see are those behind the camera enjoying this young man at his craft.
Hello Gavin, IMHO - this is most likely the best performance and acoustic playing for this particular song that you will ever hear on RU-vid. So well done young 'Gavin Gribben' you have a great voice and your acoustic playing is so well performed... I could see the road sweeper charging down and I thought OH... NOooo..! didn't make a difference at all you carried it through and made it your own Stay Lucky and come over to Liverpool City centre and entertain us. I promise to ban all road sweepers from your performance, if any dare encroach we will throw them in the River Mersey Alan - Liverpool
Never stop! You have the voice of a great story teller and that's real talent. You will go far! The way stories were told years ago, they touch the soul.
My Grandfather came home from France. My Father came home from Japan. I bow lowly to all the men who didn’t make it home. I bow again to those who did. Thank you Gavin, excellent performance.
Stunning performance of the most moving song ever written highlighting the futility of war. It's such a shame the passers-by can't take a moment to acknowledge the sacrifice these men made for our liberty. Thank you.
What a voice! And what a wonderful cover of that song!! What I don´t understand is why so very few people stop and listen to Gavin. The song and his voice is worth resting for a while and listen.
@@olefosshaug5565 Right! But unfortunately it seems that not so many people understand the message in these words.. I am not a believer. But I pray for the understanding to come. Detlev
Gavin: You are a treasure, my-friend! Truly! A very REAL treasure, and you're an anomaly for your generation, which you should be quite proud of. As the viewers of this video can plainly see, there are countless souls, walking past you, mindlessly in the background, completely oblivious to your skill, the song at-hand, its lyrics, or what is being said on behalf of the many veterans who lost their lives worldwide, who gave their lives for these apathetic losers! Bless you for caring, bless you for showcasing the plight of these precious veterans, one and all, and bless you for bringing the only generation or two, who ever truly mattered in this world, into focus.
I was revisiting this song to perform myself and found a fantastic version by Finbar Furey & Christy Dignam on the late show. I the searched more to compare the words form different artists. I have to say Gavin, that this version matches the quality of the aforementioned. In many ways even better. Absolutelty wonderful performance and beautiful to see a young man engaging in the emotion of the futility of war. As others had made comments about the number of people walking past, I decided to count them from the actual start of the song to the last note. I made it 269. It seemed so many, just then imagine the men dying in the British ranks on the first morning of the Battle of the Somme. 19,240 Dead from 7am to midday - Poigniantly that's the equivilent of 461 dying whilst Gavin performed this. (More than 1 death per second) Food for thought.
It takes some guts to play & sing that story.. If it's not done right or trying to make it sound different, it's ruined.. It takes someone special to make it sound like they're actually the one 'sitting there' by the grave side. And you did that..!!! Pure magic.. GREAT JOB!! 👍🏻🎸🎤🥇 5⭐
‘Did they really believe when they answered the call, did they really believe that this war would end wars?’ 😢 Well done, young man. Supreme talent. A beautiful song, beautifully played and sang. Gut wrenchingly poignant and powerful song that will stand the test to time for the rest of humanity.
This is really beautiful and to hear a young man sing this song is like a breath of fresh air, it's just so sad that the people passing by seem to be so indifferent to this emotional anti war song, no doubt one of the best ever wrote, the late great Eric Bogle would be proud of this you mans rendition, thank you Gavin for your sincerity and and the way this song was sung.
Somehow my ancestors in Ireland and Wales speak to me while I hear this song, always makes me feel the futility of unnecessary deaths, also here where I was born, Chile, South America.
Seemed that the passers-by were more interested in selfies than the live performance. Shallow is not even breaking the surface. Great voice did just to this remarkable song.
When written by Eric it was (and still) titled "No man's land". Nice version by this young man. I have performed it for many years, including last night. I met Eric when he came out to the Hong Kong folks festival (twice) and had a few beers with him - nice man.
To me this is the best version! I learned it this week to accompany a singer this Remembrance Week. I only hope I get half of the emotion you give. Thanks for the respect to fallen heroes.
This has got to be one of my favourite songs - I believe everyone will thank you for signing GFofF a beautiful song and you did justice to the song - excellent 💯👍
Probably the best version of this song that I’ve heard. Such a pure voice. I think that life going on all around this young man while he sings is a perfect illustration of “man’s blind indifference to his fellow man”
I have loved this Eric Bogle song since I first heard it many years ago and this is a most beautiful version by Gavin. There are thousands of my Australian countrymen lying alongside yours in those green fields as well as New Zealanders, Canadians. French, English, Indians, South Africans; the list goes on. The thing is, they are lying in the same soil as the Germans. The dead have no enemies. The song speaks perfectly to the futility of war on all sides to me as a former serviceman and veteran of 30yrs in the RAN with two grandfathers who fought in both world wars. Both of them came back pretty broken. I am amazed by the people just walking past, I imagine they are either camera shy or just don't get it - I would have been fixed to the spot. Well done mate.
Beautiful rendition of a deep song so hopeful the young generation will change away from the horrors of the past so no more songs like this have to be written . Great job .
Gavin you're playing some traditional sounding Irish Folk songs with the sound of the 60's, 70's with a sound so nice. Thank you kind Sir. Again what is in the Water over there..... Sean thank you another fine upcoming Artist we are Proud of today.
This is a scottish song wrote and recorded by Eric Bogle ...He called it .. No Man's Land ...Others copied it and changed the name to The Green Fields of France .
I signed up, 4 times. But this song, beats deeper than any military song. This is a beautiful version, made all the more poignant by the artist being the age of Willy…
