Gavin Harrison performs "Scar", taken from the album "Circles", the second collaboration of Gavin and 05Ric.

The Gavin Harrison "Protean" Signature Snare is offered in two sizes, 14" x 5.25" and 12" x 5". Made from 6-ply, hand-selected Birch and featuring a timeless Silky Black finish which is offset by white-shell hardware underlays. The snare features a special open triple-flanged steel hoop on the bottom, making SONOR's Dual Glide snare strainer even more versatile as multiple snare wires can be used and exchanged quickly and easily. Another special feature is a set of three newly designed dampening rings that are available in different widths (Light, Medium and Heavy dampening), a set of two special designed 'Protean' tuning keys that make the exchange of heads and tuning, easier, faster and more convenient.

I've been playing the drums for 30 years. I've NEVER heard a better sounding kit. Sonor drums are on a new level. His snare is the best I've ever heard. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

I have two 5 piece DW all maple kits, a vintage Slingerland 5 piece kit and a Japanese knockoff 4 piece Slingerland bop kit. If I sold them all, I STILL wouldn’t be able to afford the Sonor kit that I have been coveting! LOL

I'm a DW maple mahogany collectors kit owner. Kit is absolutely amazing! The sounds, tones, frequencies and how it can sing any type of head you put on them, and at the same time it's no where near the sound of a Sonor SQ1 or 2

Look at the dime size spot he's wearing in to that snare drum head!! My god! He's so precise!!!!!!!! The wear on my snare head is the size of a hamburger bun.

Just thinking...... what must it be like to play on a track with mind blowing, fast, technical, musical & rhythmic fills & actually know & believe your gonna nail 'em EVERYTIME?! I've never had that luxury feeling, there's always a risk involved with me when I play on screwing up a bit here & there on technical & fast fills. Audience 99% of the time don't notice..... but imagine knowing you could nail your fills cleanly & surgically like Gavin?? I dream on!!

I love a lot of great drummers, from Dennis Chambers, to Marco Minnemann, to Dave Weckl(to name a VERY VERY few), but Gavin has quite possibly THE BEST sounding drum set of all-time, and is my second favorite drummer behind Steve Smith!

From now on if i am asked what is new in the world of drumming i will say Gavin Harrison. Gavin is fresh ,dead on and plays the drums as if they were part of his body. For many years i have just listened to drummers play the kit now when i hear Gavin play the kit i can hear the drums breathing and with a heart beat come alive. Thank you for showing us that there is still so much to learn when it comes to playing the drums.

It's a shame about all the hate for vocals. It's refreshing to hear someone pick out less obvious notes and still remain melodious. Singers in general are way too predictable and boring and I usually pay all my attention towards the instrumentation. Really interesting voice, too, reminds me a bit of Adrian Belew.

To me the best thing in Gavin's playing is his discipline. Although he has super skills he doesn't show off. Just absolute drumming for music.

Those are his overhead mics. He places them in a position where he captures the entire kit rather than just the cymbals, as an extension of what his ears are actually hearing. You can check it out on the 155 page Gavin Harrison Q&A thread on the drummerworld forum.

Appears to be AKG 414s of some kind. They make a few models with in the 414 line so it's hard to say which he's using. It used to be common to use C12's and other hi end condensers/tubes but as they are expensive and drummer kept hitting them, studios began to shy away from offering them. Then mics like the 421 hit and unless you had the budget, they changed the standard.

This type of progressive rock/jazz is, I admit, a little hard to get into, ESPECIALLY if all you hear is Bieber or Gaga or 50 cent. But, once you let the rhythms and talent get into your head, it's amazing.....

Gavin and his new snare are phenomenal, but I have to admit, I really like the singer on the backing track. Reminds me so much of Davi Sylvian, especially on the verses. No wonder though, Gavin has always been a big fan of Japan

An amazing snare, except that I couldn't find a clip for the microphone on the snare because the rim is different from the standard, I wanted to find out what is suitable for sm57 for this snare

@Jardy Rodger not really over playing at all, I cant see how you see that at all. the verse is in 11/8 and the rest is 4/4. While I love groove drumming hes not overplaying at all, just moving accents around making things seem odd time. This is what 05Ric wanted, this is very tasteful, smh.
