Sir, you are an inspiration. I play the drums in my church. Here in India, we have both western styled songs and our indian folk and classical styled songs in churches. I grew up playing the tabla and dolak, and so when I play for those traditional songs, I had to play the drums in a different way which wouldn't sound like how a drumkit should be played. Those traditional songs are not heavy, but mostly laid back. When I came across you few years back, I tried to incorporate your melodic drumming style into mine, which expanded my view. And I can now try a lot of things but also can ensure playing for the benefit of the song and the place where I place. I want to say this, thankyou you so much for your drumming.

A bit of trivia - the kit used on In Absentia was a DW hire kit that Gavin wasn't particularly fond of. They were recording in LA and he had just joined PT at that point so he didn't have access to his normal Sonor kit. And I quote GH - "I don't particularly enjoy the DW sound. Hahaha"

Exactly like Ferrari, DW isn't the best in sound, appearance and build quality. It's pure hype. It wouldn't ever show up in my top5 dream setup.

Beautiful work nailing that tuning , and explaining in terms of exact notes! So annoying when some videos only give vague descriptions of tuning (eg medium high) and also don’t demonstrate the isolated sounds of top of bottom heads, which you guys DID do on this video. Keep up the good work!! I have 15” and 18” on my custom Tama kit, but I usually tune them them a fifth apart, rather than a fourth. I will have to give the fourth tuning a shot!

My suggestions: • Josh Freese(Foo Fighters and DEVO) • Mitch Mitchell(Jimi Hendrix Experience) • Andy Newmark(Session drummer for David Bowie, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, and others( • John Schwartz(Weird Al's drummer since 1980) Also what about a revised version of Nick Mason's kit? Maybe for Pink Floyd's later tours in the late '80s and '90s or for Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, or alternatively for the band's earlier stuff when Syd Barrett was in the band

If you like this sound ( I do) and would like to tune your drums to certain pitches, here's how: If you tune the reso head a minor third higher than the batter, the resulting pitch of the drum will be a whole step higher than the reso (actually an octave or two lower, but still). For example, E batter + G reso = A drum. Or, B batter + D reso = E drum.

I personally think Gretsch sounds more beautiful for porcupine tree's songs! The deep bass drum sound of Gretsch has more punch and but 17" depth of Sonor's kit has more attack and tone! Congratulations to you and your team for making it sound so similar! Thank you.

I've had a lot of success tuning my drums slightly higher than I think they should be. Very musical but still retain a good amount of bottom end to sound full.

Really cool Video. Awesome drum sound. I really like Gsvins drumming, it is so tasty. Gavin's many different cymbals are how you add texture to music as a drummer. Playing the cymbal hard, or soft, and sometimes sideways or upside down because cymbals are capable of many different sounds in just one cymbal if you know what you are doing. And it's hard to go wrong with Zildjian Custom A cymbals. I still think they are the most "musical" of all the different brands and types of cymbals out there. If you don't just bash the shit out of them all the time. But yeah, Gavin is a pretty badass drummer. The band is a little mellow for me, but still good music by far when ya want to be mellow but without being "boring"? right?

Because it’s not just an EQ, it shortens the ring of the kick drum as well.

But since I switched to Evans EMAD2 (with 2 different dampening rings), I never have to use any muffling, like using pillows and baby blankets like they did in 1970's ever again. Lol That's the options I was speaking about. Bass drum heads have come a long way to correct this problem, and frankly sound better than pillows and blankets, lol.

@@Fin-gj2th Pillows and blankets still work great, I use a few in my Remo Powerstroke 3 bass head and it sounds amazing. Plus using old rags from home is always cheaper than buying some single-use magic dampening ring :P

@triskelion2056 sure thing, nobody likes engineering of drum mechanics, but hey, keep using your baby boys blankets that sucked on his mother titty and use Remo, an unreliable and cheap head. Gotta get that classic sht sound! You use a powerstroke 3 bass head with a pillow and baby blankets? Lol sounds like you got ripped off from a mainstream head producer and have to had extra pillows for a deep sleep and some baby blankets cause Remo put you out in the cold and had to let you shiver in cheap prices and establish a pillow for naps and a baby blanket for your little boy to muffle your bass drum. Ohhhhh poor baby can't get afford actual real bass drum heads that transfers more air without a pillow putting its hand over its bass mouth and suffocating it

@triskelion2056 hate on it and use rags until you try it! As a professional drummer, I only use the best alternatives available in the drum scene. If you choose to be a amateur and use less than professional options like rags from the basement than, well that's on you, I have tried both, and lean on the sidenof professionally engineered products rather than garage tactics from uneducated creators
