The Gayatri mantra is a prayer to the god Savitri, who is an aspect of the Sun. An example translation of this mantra is:
"O divine light that illuminates the entire universe, that is worthy of worship, may it enlighten our minds and guide us to the light."
Meaning:
Om: The supreme sound, representing universal consciousness.
Bhur: Earth, representing the physical plane of existence.
Bhuvah: Atmosphere, representing the life force.
Svah: Heaven, representing the soul.
Tat: That, referring to Brahman, the absolute reality.
Savitur: Associated with Savitr, the Sun, the source of energy.
Varenyam: Worthy of worship.
Bhargo: Divine light.
Devasya: Of the divine.
Dhimahi: We meditate.
Dhiyo: Minds.
Yo: Which.
Nah: Our.
Prachodayat: Enlighten, guide.
History and Tradition:
The Gayatri mantra comes from the Rigveda, one of the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, specifically from the third mandala, hymn 62, verse 10. It is attributed to the sage Vishwamitra. The mantra is often recited during various Hindu rituals and ceremonies, as well as part of daily prayers.
Spiritual and Practical Significance:
Recitation of the Gayatri mantra is considered purifying and is believed to aid in spiritual development, concentration, and mental and spiritual clarity. It is often recited three times a day: morning, noon, and evening, known as sandhya vandana.
