5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr. Asaad al-Nawajha, neonatal specialist at Nasser Hospital:
"The work at the maternity department has been doubled today (recently) due to the displacement of the population from the north (Gaza Strip) to the south. Additionally, many pregnant women under these difficult circumstances, amid the war and the stress they're exposed to, we've noticed an increase in the number of cases of premature birth."
6. Healthcare workers inside maternity department
7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Dr. Asaad al-Nawajha, neonatal specialist at Nasser Hospital:
"All of our work depends on electricity; all the machines you see here rely on it. When the electricity is cut, these devices stop working, and all the babies will face certain death. For example, this ventilator in front of us is crucial for the baby's artificial respiration. The moment it stops, the baby will face certain death."

10. Various of Shouq Hararah holding her baby
11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shouq Hararah, mother from Gaza:
"There was bombing near our house; they threatened us. When I left at night, I felt premature birth pains. They took me to the operating room, but there were no proper birth procedures, no anaesthesia, painkillers, or anything. Praise be to God, today my child was discharged from the neonatal intensive care (NICU). I gave birth to twins; the boy was discharged, but the girl remains in the maternity ward."

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shouq Hararah, mother from Gaza:
"I swear to God, the future is terrifying, to be honest. Until now, they (newborns) have no place, no basic necessities, no clothes; they are cases of vitro fertilization."
14. Various of Harahah with her family
15. Close of baby being held by mother Hend Shamalakh
16. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hend Shamalakh, mother from Gaza:
"We almost have nowhere to go. We're currently residing in the hospital, eating, drinking, and sleeping here. We have nowhere else. I fear for my daughter, just like any mother at risk in the Gaza Strip. There is no safe place, no place to live in peace. There is no future for the children of Gaza amid this war. I wish for the war to end and for us to live in peace again."

STORYLINE:
A neonatal specialist in the overwhelmed maternity ward of a hospital in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday voiced dire warnings about the life-threatening consequences of the Israel-Hamas war.
Meanwhile, mothers cradling their newborns expressed deep fears for a future marred by conflict and deprivation.
Dr. Asaad al-Nawajha, the neonatal specialist at Nasser Hospital, says the workload inside the maternity department has "doubled," following the mass displacement from Gaza's north to the south.
"Amid the war and the stress people face, we have seen an increase in premature births among the many pregnant women under these difficult circumstances," has said.
Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are nearing collapse under the Israeli blockade that cut power and deliveries of food and other necessities to the territory in response to a bloody Hamas attack on October 7.
