Hayes had a habit of misusing words showing he wasn't as worldly as he'd have you believe . Example In the opening interview that most teams are " compromised " by two members when he meant that most teams arecomprised of two members .
I had the privilege of being an employee of my hometown coliseum back in the day. One of the best parts of the job was when wrestling came . I had the honor of meeting and chilling with just about every big name you can imagine from the 80s and 90s . Terry Gordy even dedicated a forearm crush to Kerry Von Erics chest to me during one of their matches . Years later i took my then 3 year old daughter to the matches . Although i was not an employee anymore i still knew some folks and they let me take her backstage to see her favorite BIG SHOW . after a few minutes of guys like Dusty Rhodes and Jerry lawler rubbing her head BIG SHOW and Jim Neidhart came out of the back . She freaked out and started screaming DAD , its BITCHO ITS BITCHO !!! He looked a bit annoyed and reached WAAAAY DOWN and slowly picked her WAAAAY up to his face and said in that deep as hell voice ... BIG SHOW . She was all excited about getting picked up by Big Show . He best part though was when Neidhart looked at him and said “bitcho“ lol. I wonder how long he kept that name behind the scenes .
I think Terry Gordy was a GREAT heel and was NOT underrated. Do you REMEMBER his pile driver, used to "injure people" ? Then he went to Japan and returned with the SPIKE... I thumb to the throat. I hated Gordy but [spoiler alert] in THIS match... Kevin "Big Sexy" Nash and The "Last Ride" Undertaker... THAT move is what Gordy used to FINISH HIM long before anyone every HEARD of Nash or The Undertaker... Gordy was just before his time. His only flaw... he was not good on the mic. Just my opinion...
@@ptdennis1906 He had other flaws . He was a hard drinker and it effected his reliability , he had to do things to excess including drugs , he was a great throwback wrestler but that was not selling tickets , and he was often overweight . I liked Gordy but The Freebirds had run their course and he kept returning to it out of loyalty to Michael Hayes who needed him a hell of a lot more than he was needed by the other two .... Buddy Roberts was as solid a performer as Gordy but he did not have the physical presence . Buddy sold as many tickets as a singles wrestler as he did in The Freebird ...He and King Parsons were selling out towns with no Von Erich on the card . Smaller towns true but he was over for being a heat magnet
@@MrSniperfox29: It’s not an insult. Many, if not, all of the talent in many of the Regional territories of professional wrestling back before Vince McMahan decided to do a takeover were the pioneers of what wrestling is today. A good example was The Road Warriors. These guys were popular within The NWA and The AWA in the early 80s. Then a couple of years later, WWF made Demolition. I called them FATolition. Anyway you call them, they were Brand-X of pro wrestling. And it was always like that. Anytime the NWA/WCW made a story or a new niche where it became popular within the masses, WWF would follow along with it.
A lot of folks calling him Michael PS Hayes. This was way before he started using the PS. While we’re at it...Roberts, Gordy and Hayes...those are The Fabulous Freebirds. I never bought Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin as a Freebird.
Yeah and Brad Armstrong as Fantasia/Badstreet was just pitiful. But it was hilarious when he interfered in the Freebirds vs Young Pistols title match for both teams, first as himself for the Pistols (his brother was a member) and then for the birds as Fantasia. Good memories.
They weren't first with music. They were first to use Rock music. Look up Gorgeous George matches in the 50s. He used classical. People falsely just say first to use music.
IMO, The Fabulous Freebirds gave us the best of both worlds; gritty wrestling with a large dose of Sports Entertainment in their appearance and demeanor...I watched GCW while growing up in NJ, so WWF was my flagship, but I couldn't get enough GCW/NWA; awesome show and great memories watching on The Superstation!
Superstar Billy Graham was the best on the mic. Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Jesse Ventura, Dusty Rhodes and Austin Idol have all used stuff from the Superstar. And have all said he was the best. 💯💯💯
Michael Hayes was a beast rhyming on the MIC.....My man Buddy Roberts was already a star before the Freebirds he was a original Hollywood Blonde ...RIP Terry Bam Bam Gordy
Robert Fuller Jr he was Dale Valentine back in the southwest championship days and had a feud with Ricky Steamboat . He was Promoted by Joe Blanchard ( father of Tully Blanchard) and Johnny valentine as Johnny’s brother and toured between PAC west , New York , deep south and Joe Blanchards SCW. After that he changed to Buddy Roberts and was a big part of the wrestling world . The man will be missed by us old hardcore rasslin’ fans
Buddy Roberts saved the Freebirds because they were really young and green and buck wild . Roberts was a party dog himself but a responsible and talented heel .Dale Hays was a real nutter too ..I had worked with him on a Gulf of Mexico oil rig ...and he was nuttier than a squirrel turd .
I bet they had to stop using it once they got to be a household name. I'm sure the Skynard estate put out a cease n dismiss order is why they stopped using it. They probably thought this would happen sooner or later, but wanted to run it until then. Worked!
I can see that. Hayes and Gordy originally teamed up in Tennessee and then went to Mid-South. As Hayes was barely out of his teens and Gordy still in them, Bill Watts put Buddy Roberts with the duo to help them along as they were still pretty green.
@@actionsub Hayes and Gordy actually first teamed in the short-lived Mississippi territory run by the Culkin family, local promoters who split from Leroy McGuirk. Both of them were primarily jobbers before that. That territory folded in early 1979 and Hayes and Gordy then went to work for Nick Gulas.
This brings back memories Saturday morning wrestling and Saturday nights wrestling the fabulous free birds my favourite wrestlers in those days nwa days michael ps hayes went from nwa into wwf as dok henrik the free birds from 1980,to 1992.
GCW...best wrestling ever! I used to rush home from the basketball court to watch TBS at 6:05 on Saturday evening!! We used to do the real moves out in the yard and its a wonder one of us didn't get hurt bad LOL. We were young and dumb LOL.
Jerry (Jacques Rogeau) Roberts' brother, Ray, wrestled in GA around 1977. I'm pretty sure that he is the one who convinced Ricky Steamboat not to go to Canada since business was down. So Ole Anderson brokered a deal where Steamboat went to the Mid-Atlantic and Crusher Broomfield (One Man Gang) came to Atlanta.
Same here,it's weird,he looks like a totally different person here, didn't see them at this time when they started it, too young or we didn't get that show here in Texas, don't remember seeing it, first saw him when the Freebirds were in World Class in the 80s during their fued with the Von Erichs, still had that attitude but he seemed way more gruff and savage there, they all did, that was some kickass shit to watch as a kid, great period in wrestling!
He looks like a kid without his beard. The Freebirds were great , they new what it took to get the crowd all spun up and excited. Thank you Micheal PS Hayes , Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts for all the memories and good times .
I actually met Michael Hayes he was picking up a 12 pack which is cool and when I called out to him I said Freebird Bad Street Atlanta GA and then in return he said You know It💪 and I talked with him for a moment. Nice Guy The fabulous freebirds was a bad tag team beat up a lot of wrestlers in their time.
I have now and always will be a freebirds fan! Growing up they were like Rockstars. I didn't care if they were faces or heels they were larger than life!
I had given up on wrestling. Then cable TV came to town and I decided to watch GCW. It was like a breath of fresh air after suffering through the decline of Detroit's Big Time Wrestling promotion, where the major star was as old as my grandfather, and the other "stars" were a bunch of has been's ...washed up athletes from other sports, and neophyte bums who had no business being in the ring. Enter Michael Hayes and the Freebirds. Finally some wrestling stars that a long haired weed smoking beer drinking girl chasing 18 year old could relate to, as well as a GREAT ring announcer, wrestlers that looked and wrestled like real athletes, and good angles and storylines that kept me interested. Thank You Freebirds and GCW for saving my wrestling life
Gordon did get around over the years. He was simultaneously doing commentary for Georgia Championship Wrestling and Championship Wrestling from Florida, and off and on he'd also pull duty for Ron Fuller's various promotions.
Solie was closely tied to Eddie Graham and influential in the development of his television programs. When Ann Gunkel split from the Georgia promotion and started her own group, she took almost everyone, including announcer Ed Capral. Graham, being a part owner of the Georgia promotion, brought Solie in to Atlanta because his credibility would help solidify the NWA position, and Solie ended up sticking around for years afterward. His work for other promotions came about mostly in the mid-to-late 1980s when the business changed dramatically and promoters were looking for a certain presentation on television, which as helped by Solie's credibility and reputation.
Surprising to see a very young Tim Horner has a light weight jobber. I've always thought of him as a solid middle card face. "White Lightning" was a fine athlete.
If you havent yet. Check out UFC, with ,social media, RU-vid, etc. It's like 80s Pro Wrestling but it's real fighting. Fighters cut promos now and trash talk each other on social media. It's the ultimate entertainment/sport now.
