This city is truly one of the most interesting cities in Poland. We had no idea what to expect but we were so pleasantly surprised.
In our travel guide and tour of the city, we’ll show you the top things to see and do while visiting Gdansk (Danzig).
Our highlight was the Museum of the Second World War. It was one of the best museums we’ve even been to!!! (you'll see why)
As always, we hope you enjoy the video and please let us know where you’re watching from!!!

Gdańsk is not a German city. Gdańsk was founded by Poles and in over 1000 years of existence, it belonged to Poland for over 700 years. After the WW2, the Germans were displaced from Gdańsk, but earlier, during WW2 the Germans deported Poles from Gdańsk . 997-1227: Gdańsk built by Poles and belonging to the Kingdom of Poland 1227-1294: Duchy of Pomerania (Polish, Slavic nationality) 1294-1308: Kingdom of Poland 1308-1454: Teutonic Order 1454-1466: disputable lands during the Thirteen Years' War (Poland vs the Teutonic Order) 1466- 1793: (over 300 years - Renaissance and Baroque when most beautiful buildings were built) Kingdom of Poland 1793-1807: Kingdoms of Prussia (Germany) - After Prussia made the partitions of Poland together with Russia and Austro-Hungary 1807-1814: Free City of Gdańsk (dependent on the French Empire) 1815-1920: Prussia (Germany) 1920-1939: Free City of Gdansk 1939-1945: Third Reich (Germany occupation) 1945-present: Poland

I presume the new build outskirts, where the industries are, looks differently from the center of the city. The center is rebuild because there were heavy fightings spring 45, but Poland took great pains to rebuild really nicely....

I am grateful and delighted you're advertising my city. Just to add a few anecdotes to your great video, the place where you spent the night at the beginning of your video is my neighbourhood called Zaspa. This neighbourhood hosted the city airport till the 70's when a new airport was built outside the city. On its place they built, as you stated, communist blocks of flats which till the end of 90's were all grey (unpainted). From then on they were painted to look more cheerful and attractive. There're also plenty of murals and street art some of which you've shown on your video. The neighbourhood itself is very big and stretches up to the seaside where there's a huge revamped park that then goes up to the next town called Sopot (shown at the end of your video) with plentiful bike roads for bikers, runners, skateboarders and the like.

LOL I miss my city, but you guys visiting Zaspa, I did not see that coming. I grew up in Zaspa. When i was about 9 y old walking to the school, construction workers dig up remains of defenders executed by German solders in Zaspa (polish post office 5:15 ). Gdansk is very specific city with very long history over 1000 years old, I love it. Not to far from Gdansk is Malbork Castle .... biggest in the world if you like history try to stop by. Have fun.

1989 geezz! not that long ago. Thanks for all the neat facts. I enjoyed them. Also Shantel, Julia has passed you up in height. I have never watched videos of the same people over a certain amount of time like your Africa series and now Switzerland. They have all grown so much wonderful! Except I miss my two boys being small. But you sure have lots of great memories.

Hey there! Welcome to Poland, I quite enjoyed watching your adventures and it's so great that you travel with children and work everything out together. I wanted to add few things to the points you were making about the history of Gdańsk, as I thought the things you said might give the impression of Gdańsk and Pomerania being solely a German area before the WW2, which would be rather incorrect. Polish and German elements have been mixing here ever since the Polish ruler Konrad of Masovia invited German Teutonic order (the 1200s) to come over and help defend Poland from pagan tribes of Prussians, who were located in today's Kaliningrad, Lithuania, Latvia etc., and were organising frequent raids. The Teutonic order has overstayed its welcome, and through German settlement in the area, founded its own ("Teutonic") state, competing with Poland. Poland replaced one headache with another, as the two states would often find themselves warring. Later on due to high taxes, some of the cities of the Teutonic state would rebel and join the Polish Crown (at the time multi-ethnic and multi-rligious) as a German-speaking province Royal Prussia (name appropriated from the pagan tribe that used to exist there). With some later changes the name Prussia was used o denote the German province/state that you mentioned. Polish and German history of this area are very intertwined, which is still visible in local names (such as mine). If you were looking for local reading, "The Brass Drum" by Gunther Grass (who won Nobel prize in literature) is a good recommendation.

Thanks so much for this comment! As you can see I'd don't really know too much of the history of Gdansk. In the car ride there, we listened to a very long and complicated talk that explained quite a bit about it but I couldn't do it justice with trying to explain it all.

@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders In Prussia was more than 60% Polish citizens and Gdańsk was free city and wasn`t a part of Germany. Germany always was trying took what doesn`t belong to them. Prussia was in Polish Kingdom even 300 years.

5:55 Actually it didn't started in Gdańsk, because the first protest, month earlier, was made by the crew of the helicopter and not only factory (PZL) in the town of Świdnik (by bigger city of Lublin), wich was like an inspiration for workers in Gdańsk to start their own protest. May dad is one of the PZL protesters ;)

So amazing that they rebuilt duplicate of old cities. Hard to watch and see the destruction that took place during world war. We have had a bit of wind last night and the vinyl siding is hanging and making noise and I have to put it back up when it gets light out which is annoying but seeing what those people endured does make it easier to do.

You're spot on. It's always about keeping things in perspective. To think there are cities today that have been completely destroyed is beyond comprehension. I thinking about Sierra....I don't know that they'll all get together to be able to rebuild what they've lost or not.

Germans and Russians, playing war, ruined old European cities. The Poles raised them from the ruins and rebuild them with reverence.
