A classic GE U boat getting a train started. As you can hear it throttles through all 8 notches.

Yup, this *was* what I recall. It was thunderous, and there was some *soot.*

Recently got a Rapido U25B and it’s insane how close the actual sound is to the real ones 😯

That's what I love about these U-boats... it's the most pure, unrestricted 7FDL sound you can get...

Maybe, but it's hard to beat the roar of an EMD 2-stroke.

@@andywomack3414 Agreed. I hope to someday hear a proper 567 in person, or even a non-turbo 645.... love me a roots blower under load.

If these had been invented before steam engines trains would have been called chug chugs.

My dad remembers seeing the old GEs as a kid (U30s, U33s, and so on) and he called the "lug-lugs" because of their distinctive exhaust note. At the time he didn't know what they were other than they sounded vastly different than the first gen EMD units he saw more frequently.

Thought these had 16 notches?
@pootispiker2866
@pootispiker2866 6 месяцев назад
The early uboats did, but all the half notches did was speed the engine up while keeping the previous notch's power. Rebuilds eliminated half-notches.
