A civilian versus a trained and experienced combat vet are two completely different capabilities. Civilians need to understand their place within the spectrum of a civil war or whatever happens in the US. You are not capable if you don't have proper training or experience.
@don8659

@@infantryski11b64 Negative. And before you go touting your own accomplishments and MOS. You're not the only one nor are you special. I spent 6 years in myself under the 82nd. Yes many vets know tactics but a vast majority of "vets" have no combat experience and even those in a combat MOS I can tell you that there are civilian shooters that can out perform many combat MOS solidiers/Marines. Hence why SOF and other groups hire professional CIVILIAN shooters to train and give advice within their units. This misplaced mentality and contempt towards your citizen is counterproductive and hubris. Don't forget a bunch of farmers, merchants and lawyers founded this country by going to war with the world's most dominant super power of it's time. Also keep in mind all the goat herders and rice farmers America went up against... How well did that work out? However I'll agree you're not capable if you aren't competent with training and especially experience but to say CITIZENS not subjects "should learn their place" is not only arrogant, ignorant and misguided but is incorrect. Know the difference between a soldier who's only trained and a citizen who's only trained? Nothing but a uniform. Citizens will get the experience just like a deployed combat vet will. Learning tactics isn't all that hard. A bunch of 3rd world country guys were able to figure out conventional warfare wasn't a strong approach and resorted to IED on the paths of conventional forces convoys, leaned how to avoid ISR preds, and rice farmers figured out guerrilla warfare im sure a bunch of well armed Americans can figure it out too. Also need to account for the fact that experience varies. A green beret being embedded into a rebel force vs a conventional soldier calling for fire on a mountain side are completely different experiences. Your average combat vet being the one with air support and medevac etc. Being thrown into a war where roles are reversed dramatically impact the outcome. There is merit to be had to listen to those who have been shot at but they're not the end all be all. Our forced during our revolution trying to fight a superior foe on equal grounds in a conventional manner almost cost us our independence... Just some humbling advice. Take it for what you will.

I was a Cold War Sgt. I’ve kept as fit as possible At 67. I can do 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying a 30 lb ruck over 4 big long hills. I’m not a young stud anymore. So I had to look at the current events on the news for my mission to determine my kit. Most armed citizens will coalesce and defend their block or neighborhood or town during riots until the National Guard is called in. I find that a simple belt kit is more than adequate with two 556 mags and two pistol mags, pistol, tourniquet, and flashlight. Having a light on a riffle or pistol is best but you can’t point a firearm at people just so you can see what’s going on, so you need a very bright hand held flashlight for car checks and patrol. I also use a baton and know how to use it, verses a knife ( using a knife is aggravated assault if brandished or deployed). I also have a Bump helmet with headlamp fixed to it that will fit over my ball cap. My riffle will also have a full mag ( 29 rounds). I use a small day pack for water, snacks, pencil and note pad, batteries, thin warming layer for under my shell or rain gear. Frog toggs makes light weight rain gear. Reflective vest for car checks. Safety and sun glasses, hearing protection, neck gaiter, gloves, IFAF medical supplies. Watch cap in case I get chilled. I have soft body armor and a front plate carrier so I have options. I am also a retired Medic. If in that roll I will don a more robust belt kit to handle my other items that formerly live in my day pack.

I like it. I'm old-school, myself, having been trained by Vietnam Vets (11B, 1982-85, to include one year 101st Air Assault, to include the Jungle Warfare School at Ft. Sherman, Panama. +22 years Guard and Reserve, retiring as an Intelligence officer [35D]). I'm an old dog who doesn't understand all this standing and kneeling, just because you're wearing a plate carrier. You can still get hit, and all that standing and kneeling makes you a big target (Military people have 15 min access to the best trauma care in the World. We won't have that). Yes, I have plate carriers (and upgraded PASGT helmets) for the wife and I, but mainly if we're in a vehicle, in a state of alert inside the house, etc. When things get really bad, the plan is to conduct night time patrols of the neighborhood , using the creek adjacent to the house in Vietnam-mode, but wearing my chest waders. No body armor. Just a battle belt with a canteen, some spare ammo (When COVID first hit, and since the gyms were closed, I went running at night with my pistol belt). Any time I'm not moving I'm in the prone, off of roads, trails, etc. All the stand-around kneel-around and being road bound is gonna get a lot of people killed, when the fun begins. You can't re-invent the modern firefight, since WWII. My favorite educational film on using cover is an FBI training film from 1973 (here on RU-vid).

It's always awesome when people preach the importance of emergency medical skills - it's useful in defensive situations, disasters, accidents, etc. I think that and physical fitness are your two most important tools. I myself, having recently turned 40, am realizing how important fitness is as I don't recover nearly as fast as I used to. Don't knock Condor. It's not super expensive, but it's way better than VISM and can take a pretty good beating. My whole rig is Condor, not because I prefer them over other brands (except VISM), but because they're accessible to the sort of guy, AKA me, with bad money management skills and who isn't so eager about spending $500 on a new plate carrier. My Condor carrier and every other bit of TruSpec and 5.11 gear have held up really well through training, hikes, storage, heat, cold, being dragged in the dirt, etc. Lots of hate for Condor lately, but really, it's not that bad for the average Joe, so don't feel bad for using it.

I used Condor for field training for 4 years in the 101st and as a Basic Training XO at Sill. It is finally starting to come apart a touch at the seam where the strap connects to the front of the carrier, but I'll simply re-sew it with a couple cents' worth of high strength thread and keep on trucking. I tried on a Crye JPC, I can afford a JPC, but I didn't like the way it felt compared to my Condor. For a veteran like myself who is now just a defense-conscious civilian, I think my Condor carrier is sufficient.

I have had good luck with condor aswell, alot of the hate i believe is back when they were known for making airsoft quality stuff. in the not so distant past they started making higher quality stuff with better quality assurance. now a days i believe its a very good starting point for most people, especially when they arnt sure exactly what they want because they dont have experience using any gear yet. the 7 pocket chest rig is what i recommend to most people without alot of money to throw around because kit that you have to build out gets expensive quick, getting pouches for this and that, that chest rig has one large general purpose, a large pocket for a medical kit, 3 double mag pouches for 6 mags, or 4 mags with 1 used as radio slot, and the one on the shoulder strap is perfect to throw a tourniquet in.

On the comms side of things... one thing I suggest having for SHTF is some sort of satellite comms device. Radio is great, but with an analog 7watt UV82, ground to ground, you aren’t going to transmit more than about 2 miles at best. Using repeaters high up on mountains you count maybe transmit 5 or 6 miles to the repeater. And that is all good for you and your immediate team next to you if you have one... But there are 2 problems using analog radios. 1. Everyone can hear you. There is no privacy. 2. Unless you have a really powerful HF radio with a multiple Yagi antenna array and the experience and knowledge to do the trigonometry to skip the signal off the atmosphere and get it to land exactly on your other team’s radio, you (as a civilian without a General or Amateur Extra license) can only communicate very short distances with radios. how are you going to communicate with your family (spouse, children, elderly parents, siblings, etc) that probably have no clue how to use radios? How are you going to communicate to other teams that might be 20 miles, 50 miles or more away from you? This is the dilemma my group faced. The solution we came up with which has been working really well is the Spot X satellite 2 way text messenger. It is WAAAAYYYY cheaper than a sat phone. It can send and receive text messages to/from regular cell phones and other spot X devices. And it works pretty much anywhere in the world. Even if every person in your team does not want to have one, you should at least think about the comms guy having one to communicate to other distance teams and command. But for us, pretty much everyone has one now and we can use it to communicate with our families as well as the team and surrounding teams as well as surround state’s teams. Also... I strongly recommend you guys switch to DMR handheld radios. DMR is digital ham radio. It is essentially a cell phone but with a ham radio on ham frequencies instead of commercial frequencies. You can encrypt the signal and you can send data (text, pics snd video) over it. If you setup a DMR repeater you can even run a private ATAK/CivTAK server over it (connect your Android phone to the USB on the DMR radio, and use the DMR to transmit/receive instead of cell service. Connect a laptop running the server to the repeater and tada. You have everyone in your team running on the same private ATAK!!!). It works really well. The shorter bands work better for ATAK since they have more data bandwidth available, but you can still get it to work on 2m if you need it to.

I notice you use the lifestraw in both backpacks... have you ever checked out the Sawyer mini filter? In my opinion and experience it is WAAAAYYYY better than the lifestraw. And!!! You can quick-connect it inline on your drink tube (from hydration bladder into Sawyer mini, sawyer Mini into drink tube). If I run out of water while I’m using my gear, I can just put a bandana or shemagh over the top opening of my hydration bladder (to keep debris out) and fill it with “dirty” water. As I suck the dirty water through my drink tube it pulls it through the Sawyer and filters it into clean drinkable water as I drink (while I’m moving/on the go). The Sawyer can filter over 100,000 gallons of water, will filter out everything including viruses, and you can clean it out by back flushing it with clean water! The life straw can only do around 1200 gallons of water before it stops working effectively and you can’t attach it into any hydration systems you have. So if you have a hydration bladder, it become useless once you get to the point where you need to use the lifestraw. To use the life straw you are either bending down to a puddle or pond and sucking waters directly out of it into your mouth with the life straw. Or you are capturing the dirty water in a Nalgene bottle (which I didn’t see one in your kit at all) and then using the life straw to drink out of the Nalgene bottle like you would a regular straw. With the Sawyer mini you can integrate water filtration into your existing hydration system. It just makes it way easier. I just have one connected on my drink tube all the time even if I’m putting bottled or tap water into my hydration bladder, I will even drink the already clean water through the Sawyer just so I never have to change or modify my hydration system setup in the field while I’m in an active threat area.

Blood type patches aren’t bad. I would look for something more official. I have heard of guys carrying a laminated Eldon card, medics carrying a master list, or even a blood donor card. Your blood type starts to matter when you are doing transfusions to prevent transfusion reaction. If a mil medic or Guerrilla medic is doing a transfusion I’d want to be dang sure the patient is getting the right blood. Patches are great but an actual document would give the medical provider a little more piece of mind. Then if they decide to do an eldon card or other test themselves and if it matches with your documents then they have double verified blood types.

You to think of why you would have a blood type card....if for some reason you have your own blood bags, then ok. But if you make it to a hospital, they are not going to trust the patch. They are going to check your blood type anyway. It still might be a good idea to have it in some situations. But in reality, I dont think I have ever hears of a situation where in civilian life, a blood type patch has made a difference.

I like your thought process on your gear selection and I'm not downplaying or saying its wrong but just like you said situation and environment dictate. I personally believe that for a citizens role you want to dress down your gear ex "grayman" style gear. The problem is with a full battle rattle style setup is unless your operating with others in a close nit squad /fireteam/group where you have safety in numbers you have to taken into consideration that when rule of law fails people who stand outside the current "norm' will be easily picked out and become targets. I would say dress down with gear that can be concealable under a hoody or jacket. Concealable body armor, conceal carry holster, Nalgene water bottle and non tactical colored gear (not coyote, od green, multicam colors) would probably be more beneficial in terms of trying to not attract unwanted attention. My thought process on the matter is based on what I've seen in the past 2 years with the civil unrest that has occurred in multiple states across the country. It seems that the immediate response from the masses when seeing someone in military style gear is either fearful aggression or just outright aggression. Ultimately, its the choice of the individual what type of gear he chooses to use but you have to take into consideration the environment and the situation. Again, this is just my prospect on the matter and not the "golden rule". Overall, I think the concept you take its pretty spot on. Love to see and hear your thoughts on the grayman concept in a wrol situation.

Thank you for the comment and explanation! You are right, it is very situationally dependent. LowVis armor and a CCW weapon is ideal for a “grey man” role. Entirely depends on where you find yourself and what you’re doing. Perhaps in the future we shall touch on more LowVis options.

@agmsmith4079

It depends on where you are... being here in LA and having worked with lots of gang members in the past... I can tell you, at least out here, criminals look for the EASIEST/SOFTEST targets, not the toughest/hardest... so if you go “grey” and look very unassuming during a SHTF scenario, you will get attacked. If you look like a hard target you will be left alone... A friend of mine is Korean and was one of the real “Rooftop Koreans” during the LA Riots. The people he knew that were beaten to death were the ones who looked like an easy target. Him and some retired Korean Marines were walking around with flak vests, ARs and sub machine guns, and not a single looter or criminal messed with them at all... also the police left them alone... he tells the story, where he was driving his SUV at the beginning of the riots with 8 other guys and everyone had guns in the car, AR15s, AKs, Uzis, Shotguns, etc. barrels going everywhere, they had to open the windows so they could put the barrels out the windows! A cop pulled up right next to them at a red light as they were driving into the thick of it. The cop looked at all of them, and they were sure they were all getting arrested. The cop looked at all of them, saluted them, and then took a right turn and drove out of the area... So in the aftermath of a natural disaster where there are gangs/criminals looting and attacking people or a SHTF scenario like the LA riots or maybe BLM riots... you might want to consider being more overt and NOT being a “grey man”. You want it to be known to everyone who sees you, if they attack you they will be getting fucked up if not killed in trying to rob you... they will let you go and look for an easier target.
@agmsmith4079
@agmsmith4079 2 года назад
Also, another “not grey” story from the BLM riot in LA. A guy I know owns a clothing store in LA, right where the riots happened. His store has an all glass front from floor to ceiling... he pulled all the displays back away from the glass, turned on all the lights, opened the front glass doors and set up 3 folding chairs another 10 feet inside the doors. He called 2 of his friends who came down with their AR15s and plate carriers. They sat I. The chairs with their Gear on, locked and loaded. When the rioters ran up to throw stuff through the windows or to run in through the doors to loot. The 3 guys brought their guns up to low ready... the looters stopped dead in their tracks. Then moved on to the next store. The entire street was completely destroyed but his store was pristine. Cops never messed with him or gave him a hard time about carrying AR15s in the store... so again it goes back to the idea that, if you look like you will be tough to fight, bad people will move on and look for easier targets. This is again why I don’t recommend going “grey” when lawlessness takes over.

@@agmsmith4079 if you read my post I just mentioned why that would work in certain circumstances. Your taking the factor of numerical and equipment advantage into consideration most people will avoid. If you have 10 guys loaded with ar 15s plate carriers and helmets most people are going to avoid.
@agmsmith4079
@agmsmith4079 2 года назад
I had to chuckle when you said to wear a blood type patch... in most SHTF scenarios, there is no QRF coming and no Medivac. There is no medic running around with IVs and blood bags (in the civilian world you need a prescription to get IV bags and blood bags). So the blood type patch is kind of moot... when you look at the tornados that just happened, or Katrina or the Northridge Earthquake, etc... it took days for first responders to get to people. During the LA riots no first responders even ventured into that area for 5 days!!! So the sad reality is, if you are in a SHTF situation and you get injured badly enough where you need blood or IV fluids to keep you alive, you are not going to be able to get to any first responders with blood or fluids in time to save your life. When they find your dead body days later they will be able to tell your blood type from the patch, but it isn’t really doing you any good at that point.

I agree with you however I have some thoughts. This is an example of how ill prepared the civilian sector is for any given situation and how most communities are for any incident that can occur. But this is also an opportunity to fill that gap and change civilian readiness across the board. There have been multiple preparedness communities that have attempted to develop communities for preparedness but they lack when it comes to the full spectrum of training any one individual will need let alone a community. We are working to address these issues over the next year and developing a training program that is self paced and allows everyone to pursue preparedness on multiple levels as well as focus on specialty skill sets that they want to pursue based off their geographic location. Keep an eye out cause we all can contribute to change what our current reality to something that has never been done before

@@jamesborek8125 ...I agree. It doesn’t hurt... but the blood type patch is mainly for combat medics administering blood on the battle field. In A SHTF scenario there is a high probability there won’t be any emergency medical services other than civilians with medical kits. By the time you do eventually make it to medical care, your body armor, helmet will be off and long gone and most of your clothes will be cut off and the blood type patch will also be long gone. So yes, if you have one it’s not gonna hurt anything. But In the events I’ve witnessed and been involved with, and the training FTXs I’ve done, it’s just kind of a moot point. I have registered paramedics, nurses and EMTs in our group. Blood and IV fluids are controlled just like any other prescription drug and we can’t get any to hold on to for preparedness purposes. It’s just another way the government tries to get people dependent on the government.

Great content. Thank you for sharing your experience but for remaining so humble. You are a wealth of knowledge. One thing I would add for all of the guys like me who like to stay prepared: Aid/medical/IFAK's are great. Iatrogenic injuries are not. Please please do not perform interventions (I'm looking at you, guys who have chest darts in their IFAK with nothing more than CPR training) that you are not trained in. There is such a thing as doing harm by trying to help someone. If pressure on a wound is your highest level of training, that's ok! That still saves lives. But, advanced interventions, while they may look cool, can worsen a patient's condition exponentially if you don't know what you're doing.

Nice review. Was looking for a bit more in the way of citizen's role in urban/ suburban crisis response in the absence of civil order and law enforcement. Of course, that isn't a simple subject. As for gear, you have most things well covered, might have talked about the use of a patrol type pack for other critical items [ rain gear, some snivel gear and personal hygiene, OTC meds, spare ammo ]. As a former Navy HM3 and paramedic, I keep a squad size medical bag in addition to an IFAK+, as well as a boo boo kit. These items will get a lot of use, I consider an IFAK to be a one time item. Don't ignore your individual situation. Where you live, weather, if you have any assistance and their capabilities. Should any of us need to turn out, it won't be an FTX.

Consider moving the knife to the left if its intended for fighting, protect the pistol and rifle with the right hand or to use the bang stick if in a tussle and your left hand is free to grab the knife and employ it. If its even a utility knife its still easy to access with the left hand at a relaxed state.

Some of the newer Condor Outdoor stuff is tough. I started my militiaman journey a decade ago with Condor gear because that's all I could afford. As the years progressed, the more I learned. Now, I've ditched all but one Condor GP pouch and use both European and American made products. I want to avoid supporting Communist countries as much as I can (it's difficult nowadays). Additionally, one reason why prefer to buy American is because I work for an American manufacturer of lead acid batteries. I take pride in what I help produce. If it weren't for me and hundreds of my co-workers Americans would be buying Chinese made car, UPS, and solar batteries. My perspective on American manufacturing and keeping Americans working has changed over the years.

So I do wish more people would consider the possibility of having to basically live out of a ruck. In the case your house/property is destroyed or taken over. I would like to see all that worn and see how it fits. Seems like a lot.

Marking blood type might be the “cool guy” thing to do, and may work in the .mil, but in civilian life doesn’t make much sense. NO hospital it going to trust, let alone ever even see some Velcro patch on a guy’s gear. They’re going to get O neg until they can type and cross. Blood products are one of the most heavily regulated, checked, and cross referenced things that may be given in the ED. If the local EMS agency even carries whole blood, it’s going to be O neg as well. Like I said, it looks cool, but NOBODY in the medical field is going to utilize it for anything.

I noticed you said you keep your cliff bars and life straw in your tactical pack that is attached to the back of your plate carrier... in a SHTF situation and you are trying to either get home or get to a loved one who might be caught out in the disaster area or civil unrest, how are you getting to the cliff bars and life straw without taking your body armor off? I bring this up because I too used to keep my pack attached to my plate carrier. Then I did a test run of my “get home” plan from work (17 mile walk/hike through LA from work to home). I had all my food and hydration in the pack attached to the carrier. After a couple hours of walking, I had to stop and take off the plate carrier to refill the hydration bladder and get something to eat... I quickly realized that, unless I’m walking with a team of guys, attaching the pack to the carrier is a REALLY bad idea in a SHTF situation. If I feel like it is so dangerous that I need to wear my plates, the last thing I want to do at all during my journey home is take them off for any reason whatsoever!!!! So now I run my pack with shoulder straps. It’s a little awkward at first (definitely not as streamlined) but as you walk with it for a few hours you figure out the best way to wear it over your carrier. I also found this lets me put a windbreaker or jacket on over my plate carrier but under my backpack. I found it to be more comfortable and warmer that way. Especially at night in the winter here in LA where it can get down into the 40s or 30s at night. When I went out with this setup at night in winter to test it out, having the jacket on over the carrier and pack let too much wind and cold air in under the jacket. Putting the carrier and pack on over the jacket was just too bulky and uncomfortable. but having the carrier under the jacket with the tactical pack over the jacket worked really well for me. YMMV. But definitely test out your setup on a long hike or walk the different routes you might need to take to get home. The attached pack was a big hassle I only discovered after walking for a couple hours... lesson learned! Lol.
@EverydayCitizensTactical
@EverydayCitizensTactical 2 года назад
Without a team member you’re right, I can’t get to it. However I have the back panel set up to wear a small pack over top of it. Wearing two sets of shoulder straps seemed excessive and clustered. Hopefully, if you’re in a moment in time to refill your water and take a small break, you’re in a secure position to take your PC off briefly.

Question, in the video I noticed you have your hand held flashlight mounted on your gun belt right behind your holster... how do you draw your gun AND flashlight at the same time? Every lo/no light class I’ve taken (and I’ve take. A few) we always use the flashlight in our non dominant hand so we can draw and hold our pistol in our dominant hand. Putting the light behind the pistol on your right side means you’ll have to pull the light with your right hand, cross it over into your left, then draw your pistol with your right hand... in an emergency SHTF situation, You will prob want your flashlight on your left side. Just some food for thought. Same with any pepper spray and defensive knives. Learning to use pepper spray with your left hand gives you the time to draw with your right hand while spraying, in case the pepper spray doesn’t stop the attack. Daggers like a SOCP for self defense are best to keep on your left side or left of center on the front of your plate carrier for the same reason. You can use the knife to give you time to get to your gun. But that can’t happen if the knife is in your dominant hand. For me, an IFAK works great behind the holster, as well as things like chem lights, boo boo kits, etc. work great right behind or in front of the holster on the gun belt. I also like using velcro hangers off the sides of my placard on my plate carrier to hold items like this. Flashlight or pepper spray hanging off the left side of the front placard, maybe a TQ or some chem lights hanging off the right side. Again, just some things to think about... if you’ve never tried doing any force on force training with your bug out/get home gear on... I highly recommend it. It will definitely change how you set everything up. Do different scenarios in the force on force... getting mugged by an individual, walking into a riot, getting attacked by a mob, getting attacked by gang members, getting attacked during the day vs at night, getting attacked inside a store as you are trying to get home after a SHTF event, etc.
