Trail runner here (who also does a fair amount of hiking/backpacking). Most experienced trail runners I know don't use back bladders due to the annoying sloshing of the water in the pack when running. If you can get used to it there isn't anything necessarily wrong with it though. Going along with that, most also don't use trekking poles unless doing really gnarly (very rocky or crazy elevation gains) or long distances (>100k- 62 miles). I have personally never used trekking poles while running trails. Another piece of advice depending on the distance you get into, is that you are going to need to eat a lot more frequently than when hiking. I usually do about 150-200 calories per hour training and 150-300 or more calories per hour when racing ultra marathon distances. Some last tips would be to work on learning to run downhills, which as with hiking, can really tear up your quads and ruin the rest of a long run if done incorrectly on a steep decline. Also, even the best trail runners power hike some sections of trails, usually anything >15% or so (less if you are new to it). Good luck and I am sure you will get hooked! Enjoy the content as well, keep it up!
@KyleHatesHiking
@KyleHatesHiking 3 года назад
Thanks for the insight! Seriously. I never thought about how the water bladder could be annoying
@traildogmiles
@traildogmiles Год назад
I do use a bladder when I trail run more than like 10K, but to avoid a lot of sloshing before I put it in my vest I actually turn it upside down and suck the air out. I use the same vest when I do OCR because I don't like having to rely on the course water stations especially after doing a couple OCRs where they ran out of water!

@raphaelkinney

My experience trail running is not nearly as extensive as others, but for myself I have been doing it for a few years at this point at age 25. Anything from quicker 10ks to longer 50 milers I have participated in. What I would say about the trekking poles is that I find they would be most helpful when I was at say at mile 42/50 and my abdominal muscles would start to hurt a bit from the climbing and trying to move with a pack on for so long. Having those extra points of contract with the ground on climbs was super helpful in keeping myself upright. For everything else like flatter areas and downhill I would fold them up and either carry them or tuck them away in my pack. I did also use the Z-style poles from Black Diamond but any lightweight folding set like that works well. As for what I would recommend in a pack it feels highly dependent on how long I will be out and what the terrain/conditions will be. Just going for an hour? A 500ml flask and at most a gel works fine, and if the weather is nice I just carry those things in my hand and tuck anything else in a short pocket. If weather isn't so great ill use the pack to bring a jacket and ziplock for my phone with a map on it. Anything in the 2-4 hour range and I bring the pack with all previous things mentioned and an additional flask with an option to filter as I am a thirsty boi when I get tired and a few more calories like a ziplock of all dressed chips and maybe another gel or 2. I might also carry poles at this stage but usually hands on knees works really well. 4+ hours and its pretty much the same base set of gear + anything else you could need for such a day like a headlamp, minimal first aid kit for potential things like blisters and stuff, an extra pair of socks in case the feet get wet and bogged, and something more substantial food wise if you have no option for resupply like a bag of trail mix and some candy/chocolate as those are generally pretty lightweight. Of course these are just what I have found works for me and if you are the kind of person who needs more or less food and water to get you through those kind of duration's then more power to ya. The beauty about long trail races like many ultras is that they are likely well supported with many options to resupply as you go, so many of the extra weight you would obviously carry during a solo adventure gets drastically reduced during a race/event as you can rely on those stations to keep you going. And the other misconception is that you don't have to run the entire time lol. Even when training regardless of what the distance is, especially on climbs, hands on knees and power hiking is a far more useful means of exertion I've found than trying to bust a nut running the whole climb. Of course some trail animals out there can work up to running a lot of it, but even elites power hike climbs when the gradient exceeds a certain degree because it is actually faster to do so. I realize this is a stupid long comment but work is slow this morning. Great video Kyle and maybe someday I'll get my butt back over VT/NH and we can go for a run together. Cheers.

You can buy replacement straps online for particular brands. Just depends on how they are designed. I'm pretty tough on my straps because I ski too, but I have the Black Diamond Distance FLZ and straps are replaceable. They are a good design for trail running too. Have a carbon version so may be a good option to save weight. Make sure to look at the FLZ version because it's way easier to adjust the length of the pole if you're running on variable terrain.

Can't wait to watch your trail running videos. I run ultra marathons, so depending on the mileage you are doing and how fast you want to move, you may want to change your water situation. I use Beefee water purifier, because it is hands down the fastest method for refilling water and you don't need a deep source of water, like you would to refill a bladder. I only use my bladder, if I need to carry lots of water and there are NO refill spots along the way. Refilling water with a sawyer filter takes forever and eats a bunch of your time. A bigger running pack is better too, that way you can use one pack to run multiple distances.

Yeah - no - a pee bottle is as necessary as my chair! ;) Yes, I’m old, but I was doing that more than 4 decades ago when I was in the Marines (back then it was a dedicated canteen). If I don’t happen to have room to pack the bottle (and yes, it’s dedicated, single-purpose), I will use a gallon zip-lock bag - preferably the type with the double-seal. It is especially appreciated in the winter.

I think the “pee bladder” solution is workable with a couple of caveats. First, as mentioned in one or more earlier comments, is the spill factor. One little drop before sealing the lid is likely to make a bigger mess, even than a wide mouth plastic bottle. Second is you’re going to need to be vigilant about getting it rinsed early every single day. You get enough hot hours for that thing with any urine in it and that smell is going to stick around. That’s some soft plastic. Rinse early, rinse often. I’ll stick with a wider mouth bottle like those that “bai” brand drinks come in. Haven’t considered double duty use but I suppose it’s there in an emergency. Nowhere near the capacity of the befree bag but better than nothing. The extra capacity of the bag would be nice for both potential uses so be sure to report back. Ignore the haters. I mean, 💦 on them right?

For the last guy's question, most water filters don't filter out dissolved chemicals (like urea), just bacteria and protozoa. I wouldn't do it. If you must pee in your tent, I would recommend using a separate container from your drinking source. Something like this, maybe: www.amazon.com/HGUIM-Shrinkable-Portable-Reusable-Emergency/dp/B07W99FMR1/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=HGUIM&qid=1620308463&sr=8-4 (Though I still wouldn't do it, because I would be afraid that it might leak.) If you want a water filter that can remove chemicals, then you need to step up to something with an activated charcoal filtering component like a Sawyer S1: www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP4120-Chemicals-Pesticides/dp/B0756YWYVY/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=sawyer%2Bs1&qid=1620308768&sr=8-1&th=1 Or, you know, just get out your tent to do your business--it weighs a lot less.

Looking forward to your trail running vids. I had worn various models of La Sportiva over the years, including the Wildcat, tried new shoes last spring and ended up buying a pair of Lone Peaks for the comfort. I liked them at first but they're too minimalist for all the pointy rocks (it's Pennsylvania), and they also fell apart absurdly fast. Got a pair of Wildcats this winter and hated them! Not sure if they changed or what. Went back to Altra's with their Olympus model. So far, I LOVE them. More bulky and sturdy and better suited for this old, fat heel-striker. Curious how those Lone Peaks hold up for you. I keep going back and forth about poles while running. I guess some of the fastest trail runners out there today swear by them, but I just don't know. So I'm also curious what you end up thinking about poles while running after this summer.

I recently had a heart attack the hospital provided a plastic urinal during my stay. I took it home with me because they throw them away, I discovered that the urinal was lighter than a Gatorade bottle to pee in. It is a good bit larger making it easier to use and it holds more which is good for me. Please don't piss in your bladder that just sounds gross even if a thousand animals already piss in the stream (lol) where you got your water.

I had a strap chewed through while supporting the back of a tarp handle down. As crazy as it sounds something might have chewed the strap for the salt content in your sweat while they were laying on the ground. Just had another one pull out of the handle shortly after getting up on a ridge trail a couple of weeks ago on a brand new pole. That was a manufacturer defect though. Definitely annoying. I think the GoPro footage came out great. I just picked up a DJI Osmo Action because I'm cheap so far I'm pretty happy with it. Are you using the internal mic? Also the piss bladder is just weird. That couldn't be a serious question. But if it was what I want to know is where do you get spare bags for the befree? I've only seen the hydro flask ones. The fact that getting a 1 L adds $10 to the cost of the befree is why I've stuck with my Sawyer.

This was all filmed with the gopro internal mic. No editing done to the audio at all

have to disagree with you about the pee bag- in the mountains it can get real cold at night to want to get outside my sleeping bag. That being said I bring a mylar bag, which has only one function. I just throw it outside my tent and empty it the next morning.

Couldn't hear correctly what pack you are wearing. Can you let me know which Brand and type it is please. Looking to get back into hiking camping after years out and a day pack type that will do for short overnighter if needed would be perfect. And if you are wearing it then it must be good.

So what day pack would you carry if you weren't pulling double duty with the CDT? I also use a CDT for a day pack, but it's kind of big in the summer.

Nice change of pace with the format. Sucks about the strap, you would think that should be the last thing to break on a trekking pole.

What was the temperature while you were hiking? I sweat a ton, so have to wear shorts unless it's close to freezing. As for the pee bottle, stick it straight back into your sleeping bag and you've got yourself a hot water bottle...

I love your videos and this one had many great moments like the log crossing or the "2 purpose bladder," however I do recommend trying to avoid so many cuts. It seemed like some spots had 3+ video cuts across each individual/continuous sentence. It is a good tool to spice up the video in a stagnant shot but in this vid it was distracting and dizzying Once again though, great content!
@KyleHatesHiking

Thank you! It's been my experience that more cuts keeps people engaged longer. I did do a lot on this video because it was so long and I was taking big pauses to catch my breath a lot

Um, you can actually drink your own urine FYI. It's something that is taught in survival schools. Some people claim there are health benefits and drink it as a medicinal. Obviously there are a few caveats, but I'll leave that to the readers to go look up. Generally though, it is considered safe, and could save your life if you are stranded without water or a way to procure safe water.
