You're going down a path of no return, before you know it you'll be designing parts in fusion, printing lost casts in PLA, pouring your own parts, or having china CNC machine your own designs for 1/4 what they cost retail. I recently learned how to make gears in Fusion for 3D printing for my machines (not oil related so they can stay plastic) and it's so satisfying.

1045 is medium. In the Lincoln book, it's high enough that you need to manage heat-treat effects. A really big hit weld is sometimes enough but the preheat is better. I'm not a metalergist either but I think stress relieving is basically heating to the point that carbon is able to move around in the crystal lattice. As the carbon makes clumps, it leaves behind wide open spaces of uniform iron lattice, which is where you get nice ductile behavior. Anyway, I had always heard 1 thou interference per inch of diameter. So the original dimensions may have been OK but the replacement was wrong. Thanks for the RU-vid recommendations, too

Hobo Shoestring was one of my favorites I subscribed to his channel. I feared the worst when there were not videos for two plus weeks. I too think he had a rough life but he never complained except a little bit about the VA. He lived it the way he wanted riding trains. He knew every yard, every track and every crew change point in the United States. RIP Shoestring!

Really interesting. I’m interested in metallurgy, and particularly how they did metallurgy years ago. It’s not rocket science,, but probably more like metal magic,, but it is interesting and they did some amazing things without many of the tools we take for granted. If the repair worked, it would be great and next one might.

Thanks for sharing, Sometimes I learn a bit. I was working on a hose and the barbed fitting was just not going to, fit then I remembered you heating up pipe in the field to make it easier. I charred the hose a bit but the fitting slid in like a hot fitting through butter. I always use solid brass fittings when I repair a hose. Yeah I could have just chunked the hose but what's the fun in that besides other than the smashed end it's a decent hose. And I have a box of good hose fittings.

Bummer about that shaft breaking. Despite that as a machinist I thought you did alright on it considering. I commented on that repair vid that I thought it was going to get loctited on. I don’t know if it would work for you (I expect it would) but here in mining often if the shaft is worn and you need to get it running now a new bearing gets loctited on. It is good stuff and good for a clearance up to .010”. The only thing it can’t do is a hot environment, can’t recall the temp but a gearbox would be fine. When pulling apart you use heat to release it.

So what was a better way to go? We learned the flexing of an overly hard shaft propagated the crack. Would it have been better to try to weld inside the hole and rebore? To be honest I would have tried the same things. Maybe heating the center of the gear hot hot and smashing with the press and maybe it will close up enough to recut?
