ANGLE : Personal preference for 30° but I wouldn't recommend anything lower or anything higher than 60°.
LENGHT : Depends on your strength and height. The lo,get your paddle is the more leverage you have but also the harder it is to pull. (For beginners the paddle should reach half of your hand when you extend your arm - or a little less).
SHAFT : Personally like Small straight shaft but whatever is comfortable really. I am definitely not a big fan of triple tork shafts, I don't really see the point.
CARBON vs. FIBER : Carbon blades are harder, it feels more radical. Fiber glass blades are softer, more forgiving on hits, better to prevent shoulder injuries and I recommend it to anyone with tendinitis problems.
PS: Sorry for the low quality of that video. Just did one take live so I hope it makes sense. Happy to answer questions if you have any.

I find that a zero feather angle is advantageous for being able to back deck roll on left side. What are your thoughts on that? Do you use back deck rolls? I also don't rally notice inefficiency of forward stroke on left side. Can you elaborate on why that would be the case?

How about the Werner Powerhouse? Have you given those a try?

Just came across your video from India. CRAZY river. Glad you made out alive. We got some pretty interesting adventure possibillities here in Thailand too, you should stop by. :-)

I'm surprised you don't have the Stikine since you're the queen of the Stikine. It's the smaller blade version of the Shogun made for river running. I really liked my Shogun, though I wish I had something in between the Shogun and Stikene, but I'm a bigger guy. Then there are the new Werner covert and stealth paddles which are a Dane Jackson collaboration. One of them has slightly smaller blades. Have you tried these yet?

I find the Double diamond blades to be way better than the Stikine, Shogun, or Odachi. They were marketed as playboat paddle because the blades are small but they actually have one of the better grab on water. The new paddles are really good too but they aren't available in small shaft so the good old Double Diamond remains my favorite. ;)

@@NouriaNewmanKayak Thanks, that's good to know. I currently don't have any Werners right now. I mostly use my Vulcan and a modified AT sometimes. But I have thought of getting a 203cm double diamond for playboating..

Totally agree with you regarding the double diamond , tried them all including the new blades and still feel the double diamond fits me best both river boat and play. Can I ask what you use the 2 lengths for 194 and 197 ?@@NouriaNewmanKayak

Are you still liking the Strike paddle? Does it brace and roll any differently than the Sherpa?
@NouriaNewmanKayak
@NouriaNewmanKayak 3 года назад
I still use it for over running. The blade is further forward so it feels different than the sherpa. I find it way nicer on forward stroke. Not too much of a difference for bracing or rolling. I just don't like to use it on waterfalls. And I really like the simplicity of a Double Diamond straight shaft. Kayaking is complicated enough that I like having my hands on the exact same axis as my blade

How does the double diamond compare to the shogun? Just curious to see why you go with the double diamond.

Double Diamond blades are a little bit smaller and I actually prefer the shape of the DD blade. I find it to be a simple blade and I like the way it grabs water-.

What do you think about the sherpa vs strike?
@NouriaNewmanKayak
@NouriaNewmanKayak 4 года назад
I personally like the strike better but for the most part I recommend having a paddle where the blade is in the axis of the shaft. Having the blade forward is nice for the extra reach and it feels like the strike grabs water better but it makes it harder for draws.

I noticed when watching your video about the patagonia triple crown that you had some sort of black rubber holding your middle two fingers together. What is that about? Any sort of secret against tendonitis or anything?
@NouriaNewmanKayak
@NouriaNewmanKayak 5 лет назад
Travis Miller No I broke my finger on the hike. I was roping my boat down and wanted to let go but one finger got stuck in the sling. Didn’t even broke it on the kayaking 🙈

What is your height Nouria? Just wondering because I seem to be between 194 and 197 lengths and can't decide which to go for. I'm 164cm for reference, using a 197 powerhouse at the moment.
@NouriaNewmanKayak
@NouriaNewmanKayak 5 лет назад
I am 163cm. I slalom I used to have 195,5 so I'm right in between the two werner options. If you feel comfortable with 197 I would keep that but if it feels hard to pull I would go shorter. If you're not racing and more paddling for yourself I find a little leverage from the longer paddle nicer. Hope that helps.
