What a down to earth guy! He is in fact a "virtuoso" but he doesn't want to be labeled as such. That is a TRUE virtuoso!

Sco’s not the guy you hear play a lick and think ‘Holy crap, how did he do that?!!’...It’s more like ‘How the frig did he think of playing that?!’ For me, anyways. John Scofield can say more with 5 perfectly placed notes than a lot of shredders can with a flurry of chops.

Try to play what he's playing and you still think "Holly crap, how did he play it like that?"

A true and most excellent observation coming from a pre eminent groove meister - Rob "Beat Down" Brown!

It's both of the things you mention. In particular, those sloppy-sounding licks that he does are not only unusual, but hard to play correctly.

You just try playing his notes and you’ll realize it’s not that easy. The way he plays just makes it sound easy

I heard Scofield the first time in a Jazz festival, in Chile 2007. I went with a friend, and i asked to my friend ¿this is jazz???? . I was very impressed. Before that I listened jazz without to feel nothing, for snobbis, but this day i felt the jazz by the first time, and then never stop. The sound, groove, the feeling, playing with the pedals, the boomerang, the chorus, the real lenguage, was great. And im playing! Thanks master! This day changed my life for ever!

Good interview with one of the greatest guitarists ever to play the instrument AND he sounds like himself and no one else. Two notes you know it’s Sco.

Saw him at The Bistro in St. Louis in April, and I was privileged enough to talk to him and get some great advice from him afterwards. Besides being an absolute genius on guitar he was a super nice guy!

Scofield is true to the Miles Davis' 'keep it moving' musical mindset. While I do miss the 'Rat and Chorus' sounds from the 'Still Warm' days, I've come to understand Sco's reasoning for NOT doing it anymore. #respect #keepitmoving #keepitfresh #keepsearching

I love all of Sco's music, however, I believe MSMW's "A Go Go" was a turning point for Sco. It is my honest opinion that he truly found his sound right around that time. The A Go Go album is incredibly inspiring for me, as it was for Scofield.
@samuelhendricks4822

N P Yeah I wore that record out too. Been a fan since MD Decoy, Still Warm and Bass Desires. That’s “early work”. MMW was a new context, not a new sound, IMO. That’s all. Cheers.

Yes, I actually prefer his earlier sounds. Rough House is my favorite. His soloing on "Aileron" with Giant Steps like changes is phenomenal . Going to see him perform this Saturday in Phoenix.

Agree, that's a killer record, also the album 'Live', from the previous year, w/ Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Joe Labarbera is IMHO on the same level. Another one I really like is the 1979 release 'Who's Who?' - overall a bit more Funky, but some equally furious and inspired blowing. And two incredible groups: Kenny Kirkland, Anthony Jackson and Steve Jordan on the Electric Funk tracks and Dave Liebman, Eddie Gomez and Billy Hart on he acoustic Straight Ahead ones

Is Scofield wearing hearing aids? Check out those shots from the back. I think you can see the connecting tube on his right ear.

Corey Williams Last time I saw him play live was like 25 years ago (Jeebus!), with the last version of the quartet with Lovano, and he wasn't particularly loud back then. Maybe he started turning it up after playing with MM&W and all that...

blerkh he visited a shop I work in to test some amps out and it was pretty noisy. That being said I’m sure it has a lot so do w how often he is playing more than anything. That dude plays a lot!

Haha, i've totally made that same connection to William Hurt, thanks for validating it, made he'll play him in the movie :)
@tiluriso
@tiluriso 6 лет назад
While I do hear a bit of Hurt, to my ears me he sounds more like a cross between Jeff Bridges and Curt Kirkwood (guitarist for The Meat Puppets), but he looks like a cross between Matt Walsh and Robert Duvall (when he grins/smiles/laughs). However, when he was young, in the 1970s, he looked a bit like James Taylor from the same era.

I learnt about groove when I first had Cubase VST and discovered how to program a shuffled 16th note groove for swing also known as Foxtrot, R&B, Hard House or Garage but then spent a lifetime trying to sequence funky Trance dance. I eventually discovered the biggest sequencing secret and first used the phrase Funky groove but realise this same groove is a natural human phenomenon found in Latin, the Quickstep, Jive, Rock&Roll, Bebop, HipHop, Blue Grass etc. I still use the old 1980's Cubase VST as I am not sure the approach I discovered is possible on the current sequencers.
