I love my Greenland Paddle, Akiak and now I've tried the Gearlab Kalleq, should I upgrade?
I'm still relatively new with the Greenland Paddle and I have the Gearlab Akiak. I was always fascinated with the Greenland Paddle and I wasn't sure if it was for me, and thus. I purchased the Akiak.
Fortunately, my friend purchased the Gearlab Kalleq and was super nice to let me borrow it to test it out and also to make this video. Thank you buddy!
So after playing with the Gearlab Kalleq, I can share with you how I feel about it. Hope you enjoy this video!

My first two Greenland paddles were from Gearlab. They're really well made. The last three I made myself from wood. Being able to have the exact length, loom and blade width you want really does make a difference compared to off the shelf paddles. Plus, I can make a one piece paddle for under 20 bucks. The carbon ferule to make a two piece paddle costs around 70 bucks.
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy Год назад
I would love to be able to make my own.. but I’m so bad with my hands. It’s so cool you can make different versions for you to test. What’s your preferred length?
@wisenber
@wisenber Год назад
@@Fishaholicboy All things being equal, I make mine the length that goes from the ground to my hand extended over my head while standing. If it's for a wider boat or a tandem, I'll go a bit longer. For a surfski, I'll go a bit shorter. Most paddles can be made cheaply from a single piece of 240 cm lumber with very few tools. Once you get the hang of that, you can laminate different types of wood to make more complicated designs with different paddling characteristics.

I had my first ever paddle with a GP 2 days ago. The first 10 minutes it only appeared to splash water in my face, applied some angle which stopped the splash but was almost pulling me out of the kayak. Once home I noted the speed was similar to my euro paddle, I look forward to some fun times getting used to this.
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 года назад
Hi Graham! How are you enjoying the GP? For my first time, it took me about an hour or two to get the hang of the GP. It took a few months for me to be really comfortable with it and now I’m loving it! For the speed, definitely similar to Euroblade. As I progress with the GP and with better technique, it can keep to the pace of euroblades :)

@@Fishaholicboy It was my first paddle after a back injury almost 4 months ago. I did find myself not thinking about the paddle and enjoying the view after not too long. I hope to be back on the water in the next few days to try it some more.

Hi fellow HK Paddler! Always happy to connect with people from HK! One can never have enough paddles 😂 The GP definitely feels different to the Euro and especially a winged paddle. I haven't seen anyone use a GP with a surfski before but I am sure there are! Which are do you normally paddle?

Ok in the beginning I was wondering about the color till you said limited edition, dumb luck or planned, it matched your sunglasses ? Lol... Yes the edge is somewhat sharp feeling, but with everything there is give and take. And a friendly reminder, surfers wax for anything slippery, like that slick finished paddle. Another great video, keep them coming.
@Fishaholicboy

Super dumb luck! haha! It matches my kayak too.. I should swap my Akiak for his Kalleq 😉 Oh right, I keep forgetting about surfers wax. Thank you for reminding me!

I tried a Greenland paddle once. I was surprised that I liked it! The only thing is the weight of it and the diameter. I have a small grip and hand injuries so I don't know how long I can paddle with a wooden one. I'm glad to see the alternatives out there. Hopefully I'll be able to try some others out. Thanks for this video!
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 года назад
Oh it's great you tried it! Yes, you're right, there are many different types out there and the carbon ones are really light too! I do actually want to try a wooden one some time too
@nbroadsman
@nbroadsman 9 месяцев назад
The beauty of a handmade wooden Greenland Paddle is that you can make it/have it made exactly to fit the dimensions of your own body and hand. The best made wooden paddles can be barely any heavier than the carbon versions and feel even more comfortable in the hand. After 20+ years paddling with a euro paddle I converted to Greenland Paddles about 8 years ago, after initially very sceptically borrowing a Greenland Paddle from a friend, and have never looked back. I just find them so much nicer to use (and easier to roll with). Getting the dimensions right for you though is extremely important to the efficiency and enjoyment of the Greenland Paddle.

What a fantastic review! I am contemplating both. I never wear gloves so I am a bit concerned with the slipping. I have large hands so I may have an advantage to be able to hold on to it lol. Thanks for the comparison.
@Fishaholicboy

Thanks for watching! I wouldn’t worry about the slipping.. I think it’s just the way I hold the paddle. Other people had no issues with it :)

🤔 go for the IPIK as traditional Greendland paddles are oval shaped not to slip 😉
@boutthere3374
@boutthere3374 2 года назад
I have the Kalleq and was interested in the IPIK as a second paddle but after talking with 2 GL paddlers that have a wealth of knowledge that I'll never attain I am buying another Kalleq in 230cm. The Kalleq is such a versatile dream to use tool.Cheers.
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 года назад
Hi! After getting another Kalleq, will you still get the IPIK? Btw, what length are you using now? I am using a 220cm but am wanting a shorter 210cm
@boutthere3374
@boutthere3374 2 года назад
@@Fishaholicboy After talking to the guys they made the point the Kalleq is the absolute best paddle to get for paddling skill and technique(they backed up their points but too much to type). The shouldered paddle limits your hand placement somewhat because it is a set width and its what you get. I'm sure the IPIK is going be another fantastic gearlab paddle but it may be trying to cater to a broader appeal(which is smart) and there is nothing wrong with that. As for length I have the Kalleq in 210 but it is too short for me(I'm 5'11) so I am getting the 230cm and will keep the 210 as a second that will alternate with the wing paddle I have. I almost regret buying the Kalleq because it has ruined me for all other paddles....lol
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 года назад
@@boutthere3374 haha funny how you say you almost regret buying the Kalleq.. after my Akiak GP, I don’t think I will be using a euroblade much now, it will be my backup. Good to know you’re 5’11 with the 210cm paddle as I am a similar height. I was thinking a shorter one for surfing later when I improve but maybe I can just stick with the 220cm length. Maybe a 230cm is better for me too!
@boutthere3374
@boutthere3374 2 года назад
@@Fishaholicboy At your height the 210 would be to short especially when you consider the width of your kayak.
@Fishaholicboy

First, send BIG CONGRATS on hitting your milestone! Hi and thanks, Fishaholicboy for this very informative video. Do you mind me asking if drop rings (looks not fashionable) are available to "Akiak" or "Kalleq." You mentioned water dropping through your Akiak and I see you wore the skirt in this video to roll under the water(?) Your talk always engages to the audience. Impressive! 😊😊
@Fishaholicboy
@Fishaholicboy 2 года назад
Thank you! For the drip rings, I believe you can buy them separately but people don't typically use drip rings for the GP as we are constantly moving our hands along the paddle.. so it's slightly different to the Euro. I like using the skirt as it stops the water coming in and especially when I do a roll or else I'd probably capsize 😂

Hi Chad! I have 2 Akiaks and have been very happy with them. But then I discovered Lars Gram paddles and his 3-piece paddle, those are even better. But I love the interchangeably tips of the GearLab paddles. How tall are you? 220 cm sounds like a very long paddle for you. I use paddles from 205 to maximum 215. Prefer the shorter ones. I hardly ever wear gloves unless very cold (freezing temps or close to it), not many people here in Scandinavia use cloves.
