Welcome back to another in-depth tech review of a Computer Product.
I recently took a look at the Beelink SER6 MAX which honestly apart from a QC issue - the performance for price was pretty good. At the same time GEEKOM had contacted me and I thought it would be great to see how Intel & AMD are doing in the current market at the moment and over these 2 videos, I now have a good idea of what is going on.
But this PC was plagued with a few issues, especially with thermals due to the factory applied thermal paste being pretty much useless, rendering some of the performance cores to run at 100c. I have fixed this reapplying thermal paste but I would say this is a mass produced issue. The 2 other reviews on RU-vid don't touch the subject of Thermals which I find a bit strange.
The Beelink PC is the winner for me and that will now be my main media PC in the lounge.
I know this video won't be for everyone as I scripted it and I sound very robotic, this review was very much out of my comfort zone but I hope I was able to demonstrate everything. There are dedicated reviewers out there that review Mini PCs all the time and they know exactly what to show but I just sort of was all over the place and here it is.
I think I'll let the video speak for itself, grab yourself a drink and sit back and enjoy hearing "GEEKOM" and "BEELINK" being said quite a lot throughout this.

*Geekom have responded to me about the thermals and benchmarks scores - below is their response* "For the Cinebench R23 scores, your test and experience is told to our engineer, we are so sorry that it may have some difference. For the high temperatures, your advice for improving the fans bios is also sent to our engineer as well. And our engineer said that When the machine is running a larger program or application, the CPU load reaches 100%, and the temperature of the CPU will be very high instantly. The system will automatically run the fan speed to full speed to alleviate the high temperature emitted by the CPU. If the temperature is still high for a certain period of time, That will automatically reduce the frequency of the CPU and the temperature will drop. This high temperature and high-speed fan operation is temporary and will not last forever." --------------------------------------- A massive thank you to GEEKOM for sending me this sample out for review! It's cool that you are free to put your true observations in the video. Its hard to tell with certain styles of reviews if the reviewer is giving their fair review or if they try to overlook some flaws. Going from the perspective of a consumer sounds like a nice review technique.

Just a little heads up: Using Win10 with a 13th gen Intel is not recommended because of the P and E cores. Simplified explanation: Win11 can directly decide what to run on P, and what to run on E cores which can give you a performance benefit. Win10 can't talk to the cores directly and the CPU tries to guess how to distribute the load.

This was really informative. I was really open to the idea of a mini PC, that kinda ticked all of the boxes. But it does seem that have oversold the gaming element of the box which is a real pity. GEEKOM screwed up the design of this mini-PC, the performance of the i9-13900H is far better in other devices and I know why. Look at the rated spec sheet they gave you, 45w TDP. Now look at the power consumption while in Cinebench MT, it peaks at 35w. I have a feeling GEEKOM lowered the wattage later in production since their cooling and thermal paste were junk. For reference the 13900H in a well designed device with the proper 45w TDP and better cooling scores around 19000 in Cinebench R23 MT, significantly more than then what the GEEKOM and Beelink units have.

He ruled that out being that huge a issue by using windows recording too. The issue is the thermals by far. As a CPU rises towards the TJ, it will clock down. hmmm i had this fan problem myself and i'm pretty sure is a software one. try and check if there are any kms installed, or any other tasks that take the cpu high even on idle. as for gaming, try to change the ram (use the crucial one from the beelink) and see if it gets any better. in the end tho, as you said, a core i9 is better with a desktop configuration so for the price i'll get the beelink (considering the performance and the graphic card with better gaming fps). 5/10 there was an attempt lol.
@HomerDXing
@HomerDXing 7 месяцев назад
Considerations Before Purchasing This Computer: Firstly, the cooling system is a notable concern, as the fan is not sufficiently effective in dissipating heat. This limitation results in the CPU being thermally throttled to approximately 35 watts, leading to reduced processing speeds. Additionally, despite the CPU's compatibility with DDR5 memory, this computer is equipped with DDR4 RAM. This is a significant factor as DDR4 is 50% slower than DDR5, potentially impacting overall performance.

Coincidently, last week I reapplied the thermal paste on my 8th generation i5 Intel NUC though it didn't really need it. The odd thing I noticed about your teardown of the Geekom PC is that it looks mechanically identical to the Intel NUC. I wonder if Intel gave or sold the entire design to Geekom? Your review was not really so brutal IMHO. It was simply matter-of-fact. Some PC reviewers go off on emotional rants when they don't like some aspect of the device under review. Then they do pros/cons - Not really a deal breaker.. But then I saw another higher numbered I7 model.. So I plugged that in vs. the previous two.. OMG, it Blew Them Both Out Of The Water! My literal reaction was a huge grin and an out-loud laugh! I've already had the SER6 'Pro' from last year, and my copy was nuked.. Blue-screens, freezing, HDMI not recognized/working, WiFi drops/issues.. etc. That said, I Want To Like/Trust these things - So I 'waited'. - Something I had to have to do, but, necessary.. Now that there seems to be less and less Gremlins hiding inside, I think it's safe to go for it once again.. They really are Amazing little devices - if/when they work properly. As a rule of thumb, an i9 H or HX chip is rather pointless as Intel does not properly scale to the power levels that these boxes can handle. You're much better off buying an i5 (or in some select cases i7), going for a lower TDP chip (P and U series) or an AMD chip if you want more oomph. AMD does much much better in heavily power constrained scenarios. For the same reason Intel is often ill-advised for SFFPC.

Really? I haven't seen it on any of my other gaming channels. I'm just so happy to see a mini PC not from BeezLink. I'll be happy as long as the advertising doesn't try to claim their 'carbon fiber' textured plastic is real carbon fiber, or claim that there is liquid metal thermal interface material when there isn't. So sick of other reviewers who take whatever the manufacturer says for gospel, even if Der8auer has already debunked it through scientific microscopic level material analysis.

Been thinking about that myself. There are brands where you can buy just the "barebones" configuration (just the case/board/cpu) and then add your own RAM/SSD. Do that, chuck Ubuntu Server or whatever your flavor of choice is, and you're off.

A word from a good common sense repairman when you get something brand new always look it up first check it out then take it apart you did it backwards that's not a wise thing to do. Not smart at all, not smart, dumb idea. Now you will never know how it will perform before you took it apart until after you taken it apart, you broken the manufacturer seal for quality control. Again, it is not a great idea to take something brand new apart, until you have tested it first. Gee this generation.
