The mash cooler has been designed for cooling steam conditioned mash feeds. It operates by drawing air through two fluidized product beds.
Fluidization is necessary for mash products because the product bed is so dense that no air will pass through it without controlled fluidization. However as soon as you fluidize the bed, you lose the controlled “first in-first out” flow of the product, so you risk uneven cooling. That is why the top deck of the mash cooler is a batch maker, collecting all product from the inlet valve while fluidizing the product with cold air, then discharging the entire batch to the lower deck where all mash particles will be cooled during the same number of minutes.
Discharging from the decks is timer driven and powered by hydraulic cylinders. Air volume control is essential with this type of cooler. Too little airspeed would not trigger sufficient fluidization. Too much airspeed would cause too many particles to fly into the air exhaust. Our PLC will control both the timers of the dischargers as well as the VFD of the fan.
