Great video! I agree 100% about Berkhof. One question, would you recommend this more or less highly than Bavinck’s Reformed Dogmatics?

Thanks . This looks like something that both a pastor and the joe in the pews can benefit from. Blessings

Thanks for another great and informative video. I've been considering both the Vos and Van Mastricht sets, but it wouldn't be practical to buy both (financially and bookcase spacing) would you have a preference taking into consideration that Van Mastricht set isn't complete?

Thank you always for taking the time to make these videos and sharing with us. I do have a quick question,. Would you say that this is accessible to read for a layperson? Many blessings.

Please look at Robert Reymond's New Systematic Theology! Get the Second Edition. Really rich and deep! Have read the whole 5 vol. Set of Vos' Reformed Dogmatics. Probably the deepest stuff I've ever read. These were class notes but it's written for students who know the Biblical Languages (Hebrew and Greek), so if you are just a "layman" it's hard to follow. One could take the time and find all the definitions of these Biblical terms. It needs to be read slowly, a page at a time and really think about what he's saying. I would say the same about his Pauline Eschatology, again not for the layman who isn't well versed with the Biblical Languages. Something the Editors could think about for future printings and editions.

Kindle is a good cheap way to get these books. Kindle has Vos' Reformed Dogmatics for $10 each, but occasionally they are on sale. (I picked up the set at $5/each). Hodge and Burkhof you can get for about $2/each and Calvin's Institutes (Beveridge edition) is about $2 or less). So for under about $6 you can pick up Calvin, Hodge and Burkhof. You can also pick up John Owen (55 vol in 1) for $5 and there are a couple of Kindle editions of Jonathan Edwards complete works for under $5, but look at the sample first. Some are better quality than others. Kindle has Mastricht vol 1 but not vol 2 yet.

Great, I'm adding these to my library. As a reformed Southern Baptist, I read The Baptist Confessions of Faith 1689. Can you suggest other Sys. Theo books from this area?

1.- A body of divinity of John Gill. 2 Vol. Like Calvin, Gill was primarily an exegete of Scripture, writing his work on systematic theology as an accompaniment to his comments on all of Scripture. Gill was one of the most important Protestant theologians of the 18th century, second only to Jonathan Edwards. Gill's work has been overshadowed by the use made of it by some of those who followed him, who brought some of his ideas from presents in a seminal way, to develop the hyper-Calvinist system. Without doubt, Gill's work is essential reading for every seminarian and serious student of the scriptures. 2.-Abstract of Systematic Theology of James Petigru Boyce. 2 Vol. Petigru Boyce's work is perhaps the most important work of systematic theology from a Baptist perspective ever written, second only to John Gill. However, unlike Gill, Boyce avoids mistakes that led to hyper-Calvinism. Boyce's work is very accessible and clearer than Gill's.

Hey Matthew, I was wondering what your opinion on Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics is?
@matturso2224
@matturso2224 5 лет назад
Having read through all 4 volumes of Bavinck's RD I'd like to know too. They recently released a Reformed Ethics from Bavinck. I've been studying that lately.

@@matturso2224 what is your opinion on Bavinck's RD?
@matturso2224

Hi, Charlie - apologies for the delay. I've read through all 4 volumes and am now working on Reformed Ethics. My personal opinion as a Theology enthusiast (I'm no pastor or theologian but am a believer who loves to learn Theology) I think if you're looking for writing that illuminates what doctrine is and how it's formed... Essentially in his RD he explains (very neatly and clearly). There's a lot of information in it and I found it easy to read (but that's me!). There's also an abridged version if you want the gist. So far, I think Bavinck is brilliant and you should read him!

@@matturso2224 my pastor let me borrow a volume of RD and I really REALLY like it. Very neat and clear indeed from just the little I've read so far. I ended up finding (on accident lol) Michael Horton's Systematic Theology at a local Half Price Books for $25 (until I can get Bavinck) so I'm really looking forward to diving into it at the moment. Can't wait for the day to get my hands on Bavinck though! Thanks

Opinion on Grudems ST?
@jacobsmith568
@jacobsmith568 4 года назад
In my opinion it's good beginning one because it's in one volume. I started with that in school but I think if your reformed you'll need a multi volume set from the reformed scholastic tradition like Vos. Mostly because is goes more in depth and affirms doctrines like simplicity and impassablity
