I loved this game as a kid, lot of memories. A few things worth note, like how the one assault rifle had a grenade launcher, most guns had a secondary fire in it. For example, shotgun hosts would be able to do a double barrel fire, like Half-Life. The multiplayer was fun and had bot support. It would have been funny to have civvie show it and the secret locations to play special characters on certain maps. One map had Richardson naked except for her towel, and she had a towel as a weapon that she would whip rat-tail style as a one hit, another map had the chef who would throw the plates like saucers. Speaking of the chef, on the level where you use him to poison the guards, you can actually cook the soup without the rat poison. The cutscene plays out the same, so chef (Raimi) will still do his serial killer laugh and then stop to try and hide even though he only cooked soup. The guards will comment on how it tastes bland. Since the game has to move on, when you re-enter the area they will be lined up for seconds.
For sure. They seem to be coming back (Robocop Rouge City is a good example) but I miss how healthy the "AA" market of games were. That mid place between indie but not big enough budget to be "AAA". And happy Halloween to you as well. Can't wait to play Robocop this Halloween (been a robocop fanboy since I was a kid, so I'm super excited).
19:59 I have to say, there is some GORGEOUS character animation and direction in this game. Especially for the time, but it actually holds up decently well today.
You know this a special type of weird when even Katie's editing goes next level. I also gotta love how Civvie never runs out of colorful descriptions for John Carmack.
Personally I'm kinda miffed about it these days since JC turned out to be a complete clown. Massive influence and all but really I'd just rather Civvie did the right thing and applied those same descriptions to the true genius, Hatsune Miku
@@VileLasagna Some guy at the college I burned out of: "Here's this amazing new Megatexture technology... it's huge, and takes up no space, and loads instantly... that's not _possible!_ But, 'he's John Carmack'." Meanwhile, Rage: _Atrocious texture popping a-go-go_
@@michaelandreipalon359it is indeed Katamari on the Rocks. The Katamari Damacy soundtrack is pretty rad. Lonely Rolling Star is another really good one.
Okay I dont know if anyone will read this, but all the voice acting for this game was done by a group of radio station hosts from Orlando Florida specifically Real Radio 104.1, which was in the same office building where the developers of this game were also working out of. The guy who tells you the mission briefing at the beginning is voiced by Carlos Nevaro. He recently has been in The Walking Dead and Hawkeye. I know him personally and its wild to me that a bunch of my families friends are in this cult gamecube game just because they didnt wanna pay real voice actors.
I don't know why, and I don't know how, but somehow "the audience loves the pestilent rodent!" hooked me in my soul and got me laughing in a genuinely worrisome manner. 10/10 when can we expect a Cancer Mouse plushy?
@@techmouse. Crash Bandicoot doing that look back at the camera with the eyebrows is when he jumps on top of the critters (the boar in the first game, Polar in the second, the tiger and the dinosaur in the third) to ride them and he looks like he's about to fuck them.
I always felt that this game and Eternal Darkness were critically underrated and forgotten by Nintendo, so its very nice to see you cover this game, I love it a lot!
Both are still stuck on GameCube. Although I think Eternal Darkness was sold digitally on the Wii before Nintendo shut down the online store. Hoping both eventually get remastered like Metroid Prime and Paper Mario GC.
This and Second Sight were my childhood favorite's games it pains me that games like this arent made more often, where shooting is secondary to the puzzles. Mind you I got really good at the shooting parts mostly because I played Judge Dredd on Game cube.
This game is like somebody played a bunch of Wraith the Oblivion, got really pissed off that Orpheus ruined its ending in 2004, and then decided to make a Sci-Fi homage to the setting. I love it.
@@magmos6346 No, there's not. I really don't like the idea that just because a game is old, you can spoil it; Because everyone has played every old game in existence? Completely irrational. And before anyone tells me that I didn't play it; I did. I've beaten it a few times, love its shooting due to a mouse injector patch, so I play against bots in multiplayer semi-frequently.
The eldritch abomination that lives in my pillow took time off from tormenting me so we could both watch Civvie! Thank you Civvie! Also jesus christ this makes me feel old.
This game looks like it took a huge dose of inspiration from, _YOU CALL YOURSELF THE MESSIAH?_ Which is neat! And super neat that Ross made a review of that game, so if you watch that one, and then this, Halloween is saved! \o/ Yowly Boi!
God this is a blast from the past i remember my dad buying me this game and me having a really hard time beating it but having a ton of fun! I like cancer mouse and cant wait to see where his story goes!!!!
Civvie you just brought back so many memories of playing this with my dad as a kid. I actually still have that old GameCube and even have the old disc alongside a few other games , maybe i'll plug it back in and go down memory lane a bit.
Fun fact a modded Wii U is the best way to play HD GameCube games on native hardware. The Wii U is built on the same CPU architecture as the GameCube so the bootloader Nintendont allows the Wii U to play GameCube imagine files off of an SD card without emulation. It's what I use to play any GameCube games these days and it works great since you don't need a memory card or the actual game disk.
Having the balls to throw the "If you dont want me to do it my way, give me a high way" argument at Nintendo, Civvie has reminded me why I subbed after his initial completion of Apocalypse Weekend. Blessed be he who uses good business tactics and solid points.
So happy to see that I didn't just hallucinate this game. If you want something in a similar headspace (and also basically unknown) - Requiem: Avenging Angel.
That looks like a super creative game. Someone had fun designing that one. Reminds me of Messiah, which is probably going to appear on this channel one day.
I remember N-Space, they made pretty much all of the DS Call of Duty’s which I remember quite fondly. They also made the DS version of Star Wars Battlefront : Gray Squadron, which I also loved. Hate that they faded into such obscurity. RIP. Also that 15:39 “He fucking what?!” was so funny.
Interesting how both this game and Clive Barker's Jericho have you play as a ghost with a possession mechanic, but in Jericho you're just possessing your squadmates and using their abilities.
One of the most legendary games from my childhood, solely for the multiplayer aspects. Ranked among Timesplitters 2 ,Battlefront 2,Armored core 3 and the ties that bind
7:10 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, Turok 3: Syadow of Oblivion. So... Turok on the N64. Prolly the MP game they made for it. The way you talked about the combat shotgun from FEAR, i feel abput the Cerebral Bore.
I vividly remember being super hyped about this game as a child, I think it was the second game i ever preordered after Metroid Prime 2 (Still have the shirt). I also remember 100%'ing this game so hard.
Hey, i still haven't watched the video, but i just wanted to say that i was having the worst day ever. Then, the notification for this video came, your work has been a great escape in my times of need, and just thanks in general
you should give halo another shot >good story >great vehicle mechanics >amazing shotgun the 2 weapon limit absolutely serves a purpose, and it's to tune the flow of bloodshed and encourage combo gameplay and yes, i support prisoners being forced to play games i like
Man Dolphin is such a good emu. Not just its compatibility but being able to do things like the "Resident Evil 2 seamless HD" project. If you wanted a RE 1 remake style remake for RE 2 that's it and it's free, and looks amazing.
I was always here for Cancer Mouse. His opinions are always so intelligent and well thought out. Truly the cutest and most honest character I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
Man Its so nice to see somebody cover Geist, I had it as a pre-teen and always thought It was different from anything else Ive ever played, glad to see the game wasn't a childhood fever dream and other people have actually heard of it.
31:24 - "At least the Union Aerospace Corporation had the courtesy to do their hell portals off-world." Yeah, and that worked out great, too. I mean, the second game's subtitle is literally "Hell on Earth".
During the 6th gen I was a kid who only had a GameCube but wanted to play M-rated shooters like Halo & Doom so games like this were my jam in like 2004. Mainly for its deathmatch bot MP!
I love that Civvie says there's something wrong with the AUG model and is actually right, cause it's supposed to cycle the opposite way. (Bolt handle should start at the front and move back, not start at the back and move forward.)
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who knows that Halo was the end of the FPS genre we all knew and loved and the beginning of the soulless, "hide to heal" style FPS crap that we had to put up with for far too long. Quite frankly, when Halo came out my love for the FPS genre really died off and it didn't truly return until Doom 2016 (although, RoTT 2013 did give me hope).
My friend got it working on the dolphin emulator and honestly, this game aged like fine wine. Feels good to play and the multiplayer is so fun. This game is so creative.
I remember visiting a friend pretty often and playing this. There was this one hidden character on one map. It was a woman wearing nothing but a towel, a second towel in her hand as weapon, very op and hilarious.
Great game, with more great childhood memories attached to it. These kinds of games remind me of why I started liking video games. Not always the same shit over and over, but new creative ideas. The 6th generation was just full of good ideas. Instead of replaying the same franchises over and over again, try getting to run an emulator and revisit these old gems. Super rough around the edges but just sooooo much worth it. Thanks for this trip down memory lane :)
Game Cube honestly had some underrated games. My two favorites are the Harvest Moon Magical Melody and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, thus appealing to both of the opposing sides of my psyche. It also had the most oddball of the Legacy of Kain releases, Blood Omen 2. I also have a copy of Beyond Good and Evil for it. It was an old little platform that had an odder variety of contrasting titles that never really found its stride before the next gen happened.
Not being governed by the US constitution means I am unfortunately unable to comment about ... that game. Despite owning an original X-Box I've never had a copy of it. Repossessed is fucking great and thank you for reminding me it has been far far too long since I last watched it.
There were quite a few M rated games on the N64 as there was a health amount of FPS games on the Console; The four Turok games, Perfect Dark, The three South Park Games, Every Midway Fighter, Resident Evil 2, both Quake games, Doom 64, Hexen, and Daikatana come to mind. The first M rated game published by Nintendo themselves with Eternal Darkness as both M rated N64 games from Rare were self published. There are only 8 M rated games published by Nintendo and 5 of them were in the last decade. Nintendo lighten up the restrictions on games on their consoles in the US after the formation of the ESRB which you can see with Mortal Kombat 2 being uncensored on the Super NES.
Another spoopy Horror Shooter for the GameCube was Eternal Darkness. Less FPS than Geist, but nonetheless a great game and it really creeped me out as a kid, especially when your sanity was depleted
I will never look at John Carmack the same way again after he attended BasedCon, where he apparently hung out with Robert Kroese because they're good buddies. Now that I think about it Carmack would probably love cancer mouse.
