Gel Blaster Tips: Matching Up The Right Cylinder For Your Barrel And Vice Versa

Hey guys, another gel blaster tip for you guys! I think many of you have wondered or at least have heard that certain length of barrel should match up with certain % volume of cylinder some time during your quest to modding your blaster, today we are going to look at the basic principle to how that roughly works.
As an added note, increasing barrel length to 29cm or beyond can increase accuracy because at this length, it can work with any cylinder volume, its just a matter of muzzle velocity. While the longer inner can guide the gel ball better, it also does not get affected by any excess pressure like when you fit a shorter barrel with a cylinder of too much volume.
But remember, having the right barrel length with the right cylinder is only one of the many steps to getting better trajectory and accuracy!

Galápagos J Awesome! Maybe you can start of with an intro of the types of gearboxes in the market/blasters and general info about them, then more detailed videos of each gearbox/mods separately. I just got started and it’s kinda overwhelming seeing parts referred to as for J9, J10, V2, V3, etc ... I kinda guessed what they mean, but having a proper guide would be great .. Haha
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
J9 and J10 are not gearboxes but blaster models by the brand Jinming. Majority of the gearbox used are V2, V3 are being used in very limited amount of blasters like AUG and some AKs. The V2 and V3 are basically form evolution to fit different kinds of AEGs, V2 takes up a bit more space than V3 and does not have a frame to hold the motor, it uses the pistol grip to hold it. V3 has a motor casing that directly attaches to the gearbox. both V2 and V3 have variants as well but layout is pretty much the same, you can tell and V2 from V3 very easily. Split gear box is a form of V2.

Galápagos J Thanks for the info ... so are the gearboxes in J8, J9, J10 etc and the V2 in LDT HK416 all different? Maybe I should just wait till you get around to doing the video ... haha

Hey man. Great topic and thanks. One thing I’ve been curious about; is there an optimal spring load for each gear ratio? I’ve heard guys say things like “you need a stronger spring for that to get the piston to return faster...” “your springs too weak for that that speed man..” etc etc As an example, if someone wants to use a 12:1 with a high speed motor for example - would spring load matter? Hope you had a great weekend 👍
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
The reason for higher spring load for faster gear sets is due to the fact that the sector of the gear that spins around to catch the pistons takes shorter and shorter time to return to the position as you increase the speed of the gears. Therefore, if your spring is not strong enough, the piston may not be able to be pushed back into the cylinder in time for the sector to catch onto the piston, and when that happens, it will be a crash between the teeth of the gear and the piston. This can either break your piston or ruin your gears. This is especially true if you get to 12:1, 9:1 gear ratios. For 16:1, 13:1, M100 is ok.

G'day man - Thanks for all the work you do posting these videos. I'm fresh to the topic of barrel/cylinder volume. Do you have any insight on calculating cylinder volume? Sure, pi x Rsquared x Length will give you volume but you don't use the full length of the cylinder for air do you (ladder teeth count / piston head etc)? Do you have a "Galapagos J" cylinder volume formula you could share? When they say 100%, WHAT is 100% as a volume number to use for reference or comparison to working out your own barrel volume? So many questions.... :-) Thanks for any info - about any of them.
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
Actually it’s not as complicated as that, you just have to take out the height of the piston head and that will roughly give you the actual volume of the air that gets pushed out. Just be mindful when you calculate that volume that you consider other factors as well when it comes to trajectory
@darrensadler9941

@@galapagosj3021 Thanks for the reply J. There sure seems to be a lot of variables to consider - Do you calculate hopup volume as an addition to barrel volume? (my cheapy DK-J10 adds about 4cm from the end of the inner barrel, but it also has a small port/cut-out on the bottom of it and only one modifier plate on the inside top.)

@@galapagosj3021 Ok, thanks. Given the retail market offers gels between 7mm-8mm, it seems unreasonable to expect consistency in accuracy without compromise somewhere along the line... Do you have a preferred internal barrel diameter for all your blasters? I've seen 7.0mm, 7.1mm, 7.2mm, & 7.5mm advertised, and I know you use/like copper, but just curious if your experience has refined your choice of ID. And/or do you go to the extreme of size-sorting gels ( like Mr. Guido did here for 'Brand/Average size analysis': ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oDaPT3J81VI.html ) to increase consistency with a specific size barrel ID? (Thanks for your time and sharing your knowledge - do you have a patreon or similar outlet where people can support what you do?)

As for 100% cylinder, recommended is 288-378mm, and sweet spot is at 333, but what if I am to use 400mm barrel? Does that mean there is no way formy build to achieve accuracy and consistency of matching length barrel o.o?? Also this chart did not state what barrel id is, and that also plays a bit part on the volume ratio :(
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
Anything longer than the stated, install 100%. This chart was calculated based on all the typical barrel volumes available on the market, and it is a general guide for how you pair up cylinder and barrel. By what kind of barrel, are you referring to wider and narrower inner diameter?

@@galapagosj3021 thanks for the reply ^^! my current ACR internal is stock apart from 1.2 spring and 7.5 id 400mm barrel. i choose that length coz i want a longer look. my plan is to get those cnc one piece cylinder will full nylon piston parts. but as i been reading up info on barrel to cylinder volume charts, and even with volumetic calculators online, it seems my barrel is way too long for 100% cylinder. i am just concern that will effect my accuracy as i am trying to make my ACR 20 metre accurate (a4 size grouping or smaller?) if possible :( if i were to keep the 400mm barrel length, is there ways to help with that? maybe getting a smaller id barrel?

@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
What’s wrong with your English? It’s perfectly fine bro. For accuracy you will also need to look into the right gel balls and spring combo and proper stabilization of the inner barrel. Overall it sounds ok but it’s the finer details that will determine the trajectory.

I've given up chasing "high" fps. Realistically the gel balls just aren't consistent enough. You're better off hitting around 270-280fs get your aiming practice in and get those laser precision shots going.
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
The nature of Gel balls just doesn't allow for a very high FPS, the highest I ever got was 350 and the trajectory was all over the place because even though it was fast, the ball was deformed and it causes the trajectory to go all over the place.

Can u tell about "misfeeding" i use hk416 2.5 and it don't feed at any shot, sorry for my bad english bro!
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
There are many possibilities with mis-feeding, you need to check the behaviour of the air nozzle first, is it pushing in and out as it should when you pull the trigger? Is the rubber head still attached properly? If these are fine, then you need to check if your magazine is clogged or something wrong with the contact of the wires either coming from the gearbox or in the magazine.

@@galapagosj3021 i check all of them, i think the tappet plate have issue, can't go back all the way, but why i shot up side down, it feed perfect 🙄
@galapagosj3021
@galapagosj3021 4 года назад
If it can't go back all the way, there's a possibility that it might warped or snapped. Or the spring that pulls the plate snapped. Open the gearbox and check.
