I tried this with mixed results, then thought I'd try with water-based relief printing ink--bingo! It worked great! Much better than acrylic! No problem with the ink drying too fast. I could easily pull a print. I tried it with the paper collagraph, masking tape, and the ball point pen technique--all worked great. You can also press harder for a cleaner print! Hope this is helpful for you and your followers. Your videos are great--thank you!
This is golden advice! I've not tried water based blcok ink on gel plate yet - you've inspired me to do it and make a video. You'll get full credit of course! Hoping that spreading the word about the joys of making is encouraging people to be creative and enjoy the moment : ) thanks again Ann, makes it really rewarding when comments spur me on ; )
Mark, it's a delight when your videos pop up. I learned so much from this one, particularly. Thank you for sharing your ideas and work with us. Keep it up!
As an old printmaker now, thanks to your creative ideas sharing with us, helps me to get to use the gel plate the way I’ve been searching for. Thank you.
Wow. Each of these is wonderful in its own way. I particularly love the shirt piece and the Icarus piece--especially the fact that you spread the Icarus across two plates. Definitely something to think more about, there. Also, really appreciate the way the odd areas of remaining dark ink within the body of the shirt read as form indications, not just blobs of ink. The shirt really appears to drape and rumple. I continue to be amazed by your work, and also by the subtlety that comes from such minor variations in the thickness of your collagraph relief plates. I'm also glad to see you making some work about your brother. The shirt, hanging by itself, was already pretty evocative. But in the context of the other elements, the story is rich and full of the sweet, yet painful, memories of someone sadly gone too soon. I've experienced a lot of that lately, as many of us have, this past 18 months. That work with the shirt (and, now I think of it, the Icarus piece, as well) really speak to me about loss and memories, and give me ideas for how to work on similar topics, myself. Thanks, Mark. Much appreciated!
Hi there, as ever, appreciative and thoughtful comments that make making the videos even more pleasurable. Thanks Xenopticon, really hope it spurs on some ideas and making for you. : )
I'm with you there Jeka - I work these things out then can't find enough time to explore them!! Guess homework has to take precedence, roll on Christmas holiday! sorry : (
Love this technique! Clothing makes a great subject -- and Icarus is a favorite of mine, as well. Thanks. Frequent Flyer Skywriting the perfect escape, Icarus flew waxed wings, defiant, into the sun. He never looked down, never once reconsidered that blindsided ascent; not with the warm wind in his face. Why would he look down? Midnight falls; eternity blue traced half past the new moon, to silvered horizons. No. The never looked down.
Thanks so much for sharing your videos .. I do love your approach in a creative way and its great your coming up with new ways of trying out things . keep it up Dude ...Rock on.
I was surprised to - had a feeling it would go well after masking tape collagraphs and the little heart idea I tried in a previous vid. Beyond all the other techniques I've thought of or tried, this one has a lot of legs for my particular style of working : )
Very clever, you’re full of creative ideas and you have reimagined the use of the gel plate! Looking forward to watching for your videos. New subscriber …
Cheers! I'm amazed at the potential of the gel plate! Could stop work for a year, lock myself in a room with a gel plate and feel I still wouldn't exhaust possibilities!!!
Love your work! Love your graphic skills and creative genius. You're my go-to for inspiration. Am having hits and misses with image transfers but enjoying trying out your many wonderful instructions. Thanks so much, Mark.
Your videos are so instructional and inspirational. The addition of a China pen was a true game changer with oil pastels. Amsterdam black best ink. Still experimenting with papers and hand pressure. Thank you so much.
Thanks for another wonderful video. I created a home made gelli plate and got quite good results. This sort of plate works even better than commercial ones but in the tropics of Australia my plate shrank over time and got a bit mouldy. A skin discarded by a resident carpet snake made a wonderful print but there was much hit and miss. I did not fully understand the need for thin first layer, light touch imprint and need to let it dry before next layer on plate. You have made this clear.
Wonderful video, wonderful ideas, thank you for sharing them with us. Like the idea of folding a paper-airoplane for printing, might work with simple origami too.
Hi Mark, Another great video. Your enthusiasm and subject matter are always refreshing. I believe that I am the one who supplied the link to the deli paper in UK - I stumbled upon it somehow but live in the States. I had heard in UK/EUROPE that sometimes it is referred by another name. Believe it is slightly silicone treated - not wax. The shirt is my favorite print. Keep doing videos as many people enjoy.
Hi Susan - thanks for the link for deli paper. I've not fully explored it yet but will make some time soon. Thanks also for all the lovely comments : )
Thank you! This video was really cool. I am impressed with each idea. I love that the paper works so well, it will be a so much more eco-friendly than plastic stencils for me.
Hi Anna, only just worked this technique out but will definitely be using it loads - sure it will pop up again in videos or on my website when I finally get it finished!
Hi Brygia, I'm very pleased you like this technique, I'll look out for what you get up to with it. Well done on yourt channel BTW - I love what you do with texture and layers x
Love all of these collagraph techniques and your results. The shirt and the Icarus are great. I really like your built up techniques. Do you have a go-to black, I have three, one cheap and two good brands but the all roll out very grey which is fine for the parts you want a lighter look, but no good if I want some strong definition. You are the only person I have seen thus far working with defined images on Gelli that owe a lot to drawing skills…. It is just great so see things like your shirt, gives me hope! Best Wishes for the holidays!
Hi Lindy, I know what you mean about the black. I use Amsterdam mainly, or Daler Rowney graduate. Collagraphs technique is definitely a good way of keeping a nice rich depth to tones and colours. Laser transfers are fun, and I've heard that putting the copies through printer 2 or 3 times helps a stronger transfer....... mmmm, not sure I have the patience for that!!!
Had a go with the seaweed collograph masking tape and the ballpoint pen relief ( which i got 4 good prints from.would have posted result up but can’t seem to do so on here.
Hi love watching your work so much effort and time beautiful work thank you so much. Would you be able to put the link for the deli paper pleaseeeee. I just wish I had a scrap of your talent if you could leave me any of your talent you don’t need that would be a great help lol much love Chris xxx
and when you collage (matte medium) the coffee filter down it blends in with the painting: transparent. Same with old tea bags. Take out the tea and use the tea stained bags to paint on them, collage onto your work. I haven't tried gelli printing with tea bags yet?
Mark, I got myself an obsession - watching your videos! But it's an excellent thing. Thank you for the inspiration and dedication to sharing your discoveries. I'm starting to experiment with gel printing, but I can't find the gel medium that you use for transfers - there is none in the stores around here where I live now (Eastern Europe ). Would you recommend any substitute for it?
Hi Marika. Don't know of a substitute. can you get Amazon? if you can't get any delivered let me know at markyeatsart@hotmail.com and I'll see if Ican get some to you : )
I just got wind of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your experiments. What kind (brand) of paper do you use to do your last pull of the geometrics and portraits for an archival print?
Hi Cookie - the paper I use is mostly smooth cartridge, ripped from sketchbooks, sometimes straight from a ream. anywhere between 140 and 220gsm. Couldn't tell you the brand but it's all pretty good quality, acid free etc.
So inspiring again! Loving it ! What Gel medium did you use to pull the prints? I used matt medium by Liquitex and it didn‘t work. The print just stayed on the plate. So maybe you used something else? Advice would be much appreciated! Ta Kathrin
Hi kathryn, I used Liquitex matt medium. Layers must be totally dry then add layer of gel medium and let that dry for at least 15 minutes before pulling off.
The gel medium is what is needed as it is thicker, comes in tubs (regular or thick, matte, semi, gloss, or gloss) Matte medium is too fluid-comes in bottles. @kathrinkromer
Hi Suzi, thanks for support! Yep, I got about 7 before paper collage clogs up and stops picking the paint so clearly. I guess a benefit of the 'shirt' technique is that you can keep cutting out bits and adding them on to kind refresh the collage! Not tried it yet but could work...
Fabulous! Love that you share these discoveries with us. Question: does the material you use as the backer for the built up torn paper relief a specific material or is it just paper or cardstock?

Very cool and definitely inspiring, me and P got some really great ideas from this! Would you ever be interested in doing something across channels? We certainly have some ideas 😁 and would be honored 😊
hello you and P. glad you got some ideas. let me know what you have in mind - I am struggling to find any time around day job and family so you may have to wait quite a while!!!
@@yeatesmakes Hello Yeates, sounds great I have tried to reply a few times... not sure why they aren't posting. Anyway we can figure something out, Are you on IG or FB? Or I can email?
@@yeatesmakes I hadn’t either. I like to use tissue paper, a lot, but its lack of strength is obviously an issue. I went on a workshop recently and the artist uses carnival paper. It’s also known as wet-stretch or wet-strength paper. I love your videos, by the way.
