A highlight for many visitors is the boat safari in Gelsenkirchen Zoo in the Africa theme world. While it's difficult to fully capture the experience on video, this video provides a small glimpse.
Although all animal species can also be observed from land, the boat safari offers other insights and views. In addition, the experienced immersion is on another level. The tour is free for all visitors anyway.
It's exciting to see the animals again from the waterside and to feel like you're on a safari in Africa for a while - right in the middle of the Ruhr area. These immersive experiences are known to further communicate the conservation message of zoological institutions.
If the boats look familiar, it's not a coincidence: their design is reminiscent of the eponymous steamboat from the film "African Queen" published in 1951. The main roles were played by Humphrey Bogart & Katharine Hepburn, and the movie was directed by John Huston. Bogart was awarded the Academy Award for Best Male Lead for his performance.
