That’s funny you mentioned it. I once lend a Patrol that needed to be topped up with electrons every hour or so. First thing I thought of when hearing their issues.
MARTY!!! I've paused immediately at 7:42 to urgently tell you... please don't close your bonnet like that on a Gemini. You will dent it!! Hold it about 5-6 inches up, then drop it. That's the best way for Gemini's. If you've fitted after market bonnet struts, you might need to find a slightly different method again... but don't push on it. They are also double skinned on that part of the bonnet so you can't push the dent out from inside, once you dent it, game over you need a PDR dude... ok, roll the tape...
Owned one for over 10 years, did similar to Marty. Never had a problem. Use your palms, spread the weight, maybe 2 hands, I don't agree with dropping, especially if you left a socket in the channels.
It's why I'm confused as to why Forze never asks these guys to do a segment with their cars, I think MCM has some of the most dope and crazy cars than most youtube channels, I'd much rather their stuff than what Donut has to offer 😩
That’s a nice thing to say, thanks. Genuinely enjoy hanging out with everyone you saw in this video on and off screen. Except for the petrol alternator he can go in the bin.
TF was a Cortina model, not a Celica. I think you're thinking of the Aisin W50 "steel case" 5 speed box from the TA22 Celica which was a popular swap back in the day for Geminis, Escorts, Toranas, etc.
Love it. Love geminis but alot of work for power, i put standard series 4 rotory turbo swap in my TD wagon, and with an old microtech D5 😅 makes 240hp at wheels on 8psi. Easy swap n paints lines like a champ 🤙
Marty, Many moons ago I had a stock 1963 Cortina (1987). Stock 1500. Boring. But as it was my daily I converted it from the old Lucas generator to a Bosch alternator off a Falcon (wow - a whole 35A!). That was great as I could now see at night. Then it became un-boring. Lotus casting, +0.080", big Cosworth cam, 1600 rods, forged pistons balanced etc. and a pair of 42DCOE's. Sweet spot was 7500rpm. So what? It used to destroy the alternators with RPM. The windings on the rotor just used to pull themselves out. The answer was to put a bigger pulley on it and slow it down. Suggest you look inside the old alternator before you replace it (and potentially do it all again), particularly where the windings are connected to the slip-rings. Love the Gemini build and the channel. And cammy nasty engines make great daily drivers 🤣 Cheers.
Well this car has put up a fight with more than your fair share of bad luck, but then.... old cars. It's always nice to hear how modern turbos respond so well, seeing low end boost come in easily. In the old day, running a big(ish) turbo in lazy mode like this would have resulted in a power curve like a two stroke bike engine! Its always a good sign when Scotty praises how the car behaves on the dyno, hopefully when the car is completely fettled you are going to have a genuine nugget in the MCM garage.
Now a Astra nine limo diff centre kit, with 28 spline axles would be a good edition. A strengthened torque tube, with solid rubber mounts, will hold good HP. VS rear disk brakes. Vt front brake conversion. VT Master cylinder on a 16mm thick spacer, with a longer plunger machined. And you are set for stopping. Gemini brakes are not great. Love the car. Great power. Well done all. :)
Yet another top notch build bro, really hope you enjoy it out and about, please next vid out at Marulan (sorry, the old name is stuck in my head) once its all run in and sorted!
On the horn trick, if you want to have some fun hook the horn up to the brake switch. Every time they hit the brake the horn goes off! We did this in college to a housemate, he drove it to the garage to the garage to get it fixed. Another housemate "helped him" and drove in front of him intentionally slowing down to make him brake (horn goes off). I called the garage letting them know what was going on and they ended up playing along until we finally let the guy in on the joke.
Superb little project/car. That first pull, with timing pulled out, was more powerful than my stock 06 WRX. It's going to be interesting to see how that thing goes with around 200kw on the street. I don't think you are going to have an awful lot of traction. I had a GC8 WRX with and APS set up, it puit out 220kw. That was more power thaty I think I've ever needed.
Hope you are feeling better with both the Gemini & the eye, Marty. Also given the build was still going until recently, does that mean an extension with the Gemini posters?
Top tip, Grab some Ratchet straps to ratchet strap the gearbox, or whatever item you use on the trans jack, down. Sux to lose a transmission because its imbalanced. Ask me how I know.. lol👍🏾👍🏾
I think this car is better than italian expensive sports car...better put together. and tested a lot better...and even then, cars break. but this one you can fix easy. even if you need some computer work. well done!.
"That is a speed sensor from a Rodeo...that we didn't get in Australia and i think you guys got in America" Mate, that thing's gonna be cactus in about 3000 KM. Our old Rodeo went through 4 of them in the 10ish years we had it.
If the alternator is chucking out 15v it sounds like an issue with the VRM - afaik it should never reach that voltage, VRM should always step it down. Throwing a new alternator assembly at it should fix it for you legends 💪
