It's also worth noting that if you're in an area that has a history of glacier activity, you can find a whole host of minerals that were brought in from further north. I've found non-native feldspar moonstone in northern Indiana that probably made its way down from Canada.

I’m in Australia, and I’ve found so much in my backyard! Chalcedony, rose Quartz, galena, small geodes and jaspers! I’m so amazed I can fossick in my backyard thanks to imported gravel 😂 I’ve found heaps in car parks too, where the ground is being worn away rapidly. I look everywhere now, even if I know it’s not a known area for gems. There are always so many things to find!

You could make a load with rose quarts!It's called rhodochrostite I think, I prefer to keep it a prize piece though, But I may be mistaken

I found a rockhounds collection that got dumped down a creek that ran along the side of our old house, I found lots of iron and copper, quartz, fluorite, petrified wood in multiple different varieties some had turned to agate, some had become opal, Some with a beautiful druzy pitch, Crystallize Ruby, different types of obsidian, large Garnet clusters, and a bunch of other stuff I have yet to identify.

I live in Arizona. I've found Apache Tears (obsidian), LOTS of chalcedony and some really nice pieces of quartz including quartz points. None of them were found in my backyard though. This makes me want to dig around in the yard at my new place 😁

I live in California and go to Arizona often, there is so much in Arizona as it was nearly on the list every time in the video above and petrified wood is awesome to hunt for also

My friend Regan lives in Arizona, he sends me lots of different minerals like Obsidian, Red Jasper, Geodes, Fire Agate. I’m from Wales U.K. where we don’t have these.

Im in the uk but when I was a kid my Dad was digging a pond out in the back garden and we found a real amethyst geode. He cracked it and it started the obsession for me. Never found any since though! The Uk is tough for finding things

I found geodes in my yard in the high country of AZ. However, I think it was material for landscaping. Big but short quartz crystals.

My country is super boring on the side of minerals apart from amber, though it does have alot of history with glaciers from scandinavia so that gives me a little more hope to keep looking for stuff.

I'm in Montana, and ngl, we have almost an unbelievable amount of stuff. Another thing to note is that something might be available in your area but not be a big thing. For example, Montana has diamonds, yet no one mines them, and there are like 5 different sapphire mines instead. I figure there's a reason, but it doesn't stop people from still finding diamonds here.

the Eastern states are full of gem stones - here in NH we have garnet, beryl, tourmaline and loads of others...and I have a HUGE problem with people trespassing on private property to hack away

In Maine you can find garnet, lopidalite, amethyst, tourmaline, fluorite, apatite and the list goes on. There is so much garnet here that some lakes have pink sand beaches. While there is a lot of pigmatite, a retired couple from Newery Maine digging in their own back yard, found a deposit of Lithium worth over a billion dollars! My husband and I just bought a house on 5 acres of land just outside Newery. We will be digging soon!

Here in So. Cal I've found what I 'think' are tiny red garnets in a white stone, and a chunk of pink chalcedony in my own backyard, but I really want to drive a few hours to San Diego soon to dig for Kunzite!

In Oregon we found a mega loud of what seems to a be a odd mix of opal, jasper and very little bits of agate all formed together some how. But the place it was found isn’t known for finding opal so that was super cool and also opened my eyes that rocks of any kind can honestly be anywhere on this planet even in places it thought not to be but has the right geological conditions for it to form just no one’s found it yet like in my sit. Not saying we are the first people to find any type of opal in turner Oregon but again it’s a place no listed or even seeked out for finding opal.

One time I found a huge deep purple amethyst cluster, probably could have sold it for easily over 100 bucks, but I definitely want to keep it

The only thing I've found is giant chunks of quartz while wandering around in a ditch. I was thrilled. I found 4. They go where I go. I was very proud of them then and still am ! We have garnet in Alabama too. ( Not mentioned )

Brooklyn NY is the western end of the terminal moraine that makes up Long Island, so all I expect to find are glacier rounded stones scraped off of Vt., NH, Mass , and Conn. The cemetery nearby used the small rounded stones to line their drainage ditches alongside their roads. Our sand/ dust is mostly ground up granite, so gemstones must be harder to wear well here.

Probably one of my favs so far! Although, CA is a big state, wish Nor vs So Cal was specified! After all, it IS the entire length of both Arizona and Nevada...

I haven't found any but friends have found Amethyst in my area of VA we have a lot of Quartz so finding the purple one is rare but i hope to find a piece

I did this today and found some really cool stuff can you sell jade? I have really small prices in my backyard... I also found a white stone that looks like crystals but really milky the size of a baseball

New York's state gem is garnet, and I've heard you can find garner sitting in the river bed of the delaware.

NY has worlds largest garnet mine. Pyrope not much is facet grade. When we bought our house in ADK mtns my son found someone's collection under a bush.( My house is 216 yr old). Here in NY we have garnets. My fire pit is full of them. Some labradorite. Quartz mica some gold.

A few years ago almost a decade now I threw random gems into the forests in different towns/cities cuz I felt cursed but I thought it would be cool if someone else found them one day. They were ones I bought at the store.

So, no joke: like a mile from my house is a spot... Ruby, sapphire(mostly light purple star sapphires), spinel (green ceylonite), gold, platinum stuff, REE, monazite, topaz, diamonds allegedly, oh yeah, few types of garnets, quarts (duh), epidote for days, etc etc etc. And im sure im missing a bunch, but for reals... Well, here in Wales I’ve dug up a few Roman coins. Any large hauls are classed as Treasure Trove and belong to the Queen. It’s the Law.

Be aware that in most of America, the homeowners do NOT have mineral rights. That means if you find anything and it is made public, the developer, utility companies or government can take it from you or sue you for it. Timber, water, and mineral rights are not automatically purchased when property is bought. The legal deed must say these rights are being purchased and " run with the land"

We don't have too many cool gemstones we can find in our backyards. There is a a cool mine in Ontario called Princess Sodalite Mine. They have up to 25 variety of minerals and other items to discover.

Just a heads up, depending on where you are in Oregon, it may be illegal to take home obsidian that you find. For example I believe that it's illegal to collect obsidian from the Sisters mountain ranges, though I have to admit, I'm hearing this second hand.
