Sort of... A lot of people have made creative worlds nearly as wonderful in Fiction. When you make your premise to be "A World with Chaotic Climates and Thousands of Islands" then also make the animal and wildlife have zero inhibitions they can be ANYTHING and ANY SIZE. It lends to an entire eclectic universe within one world. Clever. Amazing world for sure. Not necessarily impossible for someone else to do it though.

Part of the magic of One Piece is sharing it with others. I remember I was apprehensive because of the art when I was younger, but a friend started telling me all about it. I was super interested and just asked questions and listened. I downloaded some of the chapters a few weeks later, and while working on a farm in the middle of nowhere with no internet, I started reading and was hooked. Seeing other people go through this experience as well is absolute magic, and something you've both struck gold on. The manga is absolutely gorgeous in color :)

I absolutely love the fact that every person who sees this video is like "Is that guy riding a bike on water?" or "Look at that guy riding a bike on the ocean" or the like. As for the anime thing, a lot of anime were adapted in the 70s and the 80s without actually being presented as foreign. Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Gigantor. Or chopped up and turned into new shows like... what was that thing Macross got made into, Robotech I think? I remember being a little kid during summer vacation, the original Dragonball came on at 6 AM and I would get up early to watch it. That was little me's jam.

The author of One Piece is a world building nerd. Whenever the main cast visit a new island, Oda takes the time to introduce its culture, architecture, unique fauna and flora alongside its lore. He also pulls a lot of references from real world cultures and blends them seamlessly into the show. As a little fun fact. He does the same thing with characters, so I'm sure you (Richard) will have a good laugh recognizing some celebrities. If you didn't already. You should react to the "One Piece, the greatest story ever told". Beware, it does spoil a bit, but it's out of context enough to not matter

7:35 when creating the story, the author wanted the characters/locations to seem multicultural and not just Japanese to make the story's world building much more vast.. eg. the main cast are ment to reflect certain cultures: -luffy -> Brazil zero-> Japan franky-> USA Brook-> British etc. Also, if you look at the architecture and people from different islands, inspiration was taken from many different cultures eg shandoria-> native Americans alabasta -> Egypt water 7 -> Venice

8:30 The fact that there are english words, yeah, they are mainly there for novelty for the Japanese audience, but sometimes they are there to reference the IRL places that served as inspiration, even if it is just like an anime only thing. Dressrossa had a place called "Tienda del Bebé", in the Señor Pink flashback and it means "Baby's Shop". One of the most fun things you can do with One Piece is to try and find out the IRL references, either confirmed or possible candidates. Just like with Jojo's, I have learned so much about History, Art, Actors, fashion and other things just from studying One Piece. For Example, please check the painting called "The Elephants", painted by Salvador Dalí. Also pictures from arquitecture in Yemen. Or the story of King Joyoboyo from Indonesia. Or the Pirate Olivier Levasseur Maybe you would also want to look at the phenomenon of "Rayleigh Scattering", or Vertical Spike Waves, or Catatumbo lightning. There is just so, soo SOOOO much history, geography, history, art, pop culture EVERYWHERE.

One piece has some of the most amazing voice work I've ever heard in media. The Japanese voice cast are some of the best in the business, and the characters are so expressive, the story so epic and emotional (in so many directions), that it allows for some of the greatest voice performances you could find. There are scenes from this story that, even being over two decades old and knowing FULL well what is going to happen, they make me tear up every damn time. And that's due to the direction and composition of the shots, the top tier OST, and the incredible performances of the voice actors.

One Pace, you're talking about at like 20 minutes or so. they edited out extra reaction shots, recaps, extra flashbacks from the episode prior or ones shown often. it's also consolidated usually 2-4 episodes into "1" and removes the parts not directly in the manga. would recommend going back to those after the fact b/c you'll always wish there was more to the series. also they aren't "done" yet so certain arcs aren't completed or even touched mostly. kinda has a learning curve to get the video's, requires torrenting and such but if you can do that you're good to go.

If you do end up watching one piece, toei animation is a cheap bunch and you can fast forward a lot. Out of 20 minutes an episode, you can usually skip about 6 minutes of intro and outro. I even skipped the half way point transition because its like thirty seconds alone when I got through the majority of one piece. I’ve been waiting forever for someone to properly cut things down to just a solid chunk of only new shots (thats the other thing is they re use animation if they can get it.) because out of every episode I bet the average percentage of new content is closer to 50% than to 80%… It’s daunting to watch one piece, I hear the mangas better about this.

Regarding Japanese English wording, the Marines use "MARINE" as their designation in both manga and anime. The term is written in English. Richard observed the Japanese word "JUSTICE" written on the building. Different high-ranking individuals within the Marines have varied versions of justice as their motto, displayed on their walls. However, the entire Marine force shares the common attribute of adhering to justice, whatever its interpretation may be. As one ascends in rank, personal notions of justice become more prevalent. Examples of personalized justice mottos in Japanese for these high-ranking individuals include: - Kakageru Seigi: 掲げる正義 (Upheld Justice) - Zettai-Teki Seigi: 絶対的正義 (Absolute Justice) - Aokiji: だらけきった正義 (Lazy Justice) - Kizaru: どっちつかずの正義 (Unclear Justice) - Sakazuki: 徹底的な正義 (Thorough Justice) In all these instances, the individuals display their Japanese version of justice prominently, typically on a wall. Conversely, words meant to be universally understood are in English, such as "DEAD OR ALIVE" on wanted posters, reflecting English's status as a global language (even in the manga).

Around the 8 minute mark, you discuss how there's a mix of both japanese and english text on things. And yes, I can confirm that in Japan, there's something called "decorative English" which is pretty much what it sounds like. Just like you said, similar to how there's english people who will get tattoos of chinese or japanese words, the same is true in Japan (though not quite for tattoos) where it's popular marketting practise to use english words and letters because the english language is seen as "trendy". You will find Japan has plenty of shirts, companies, ads, and even the lyrics in their songs will sometimes incorporate English words because it simply sounds cool to them. I mean think about the name of the show itself. "One Piece" doesn't actually have a secret Japanese name or anything it's translated from. The characters of the show will quite literally refer to the mysterious treasure as "One Piece" in english even though they're speaking japanese.

A lot of names in the manga are English words, sometimes written in our letters but often written in Japanese script which causes problem because it can actually take years before we find out how a word is actually written (since it's not actually a Japanese word so Japanese people or dictionaries can't help) which can have massive implications even story-wise xD

Nice video! I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to the live action eventually!! Just for more clarification about the movies, the events that happen in the movies are not canon, but the flashbacks we see in them, as well as the characters in the movie, are canon. For example, Uta is canon, as well as the flashback about her, Shanks, and Luffy; but the events in the movie never happened in the actual story of One Piece. Thanks for the video and greetings from the Canary Islands 🇮🇨 ✌🏻

The story is gorgeous happy to see you’re enjoying it. It’s definitely a commitment to get into the world. reading the manga in my eyes is the easiest way to absorb the information but I think if you just see little pieces of world building and get a general idea for the themes that’s a perfect way to lightly touch the material

maybe one piece or two of advice: If Gen X Dad starts watching the anime, he needs to keep in mind that the first episode of one piece is from 1999. So the graphics might not be as pretty as it looked in this video. The anime has huge pacing issues later on in the series, but it will take a while before u hit that point,so no need to worry about that yet,

You'll look back on this all very fondly in due time.. Regardless Hope you & your pops will enjoy my recommendation and hopefully you'll have converted your dad to binge the show xD

If your dad wants to know more about One Piece but doesn't have the time to read/watch over 1000+ episodes/chapters, there is an ONLY 6 hour long video essay on One piece that explains a lot of the story and goes into a ton of detail(and spoilers) about the manga/show he should check out "One Piece: The Modern Odyssey (A Literary Analysis & Video Essay) - by AxelBeats!"

Yeah dub sucks, im Portuguese, in Portugal its very rare to find something dubbed in our language, even so, i really dont like anything dubbed, the original artists gave their all for the final product so i like to watch original EVERYTHING, even in video games.

Something to think about if you decide to read or watch it. Like you said One Piece fans are amazing. I have recently started watching reaction RU-vidrs, but whenever they start one piece, their subscribers gets a major bump. Read it, it'sworth it in more ways than one. But you really will love it, so don't worry about it.

I understand the time commitment is a lot. Here’s what I will say. Since this is a serialized comic you can take it slow. When you have a few minutes you can read a couple chapters. Takes juts a few minutes. Do that and you’ll be caught up in no time. The anime can be great but it’s a much bigger time commitment and honestly the quality varies through the years. Also if you need further further convincing what SuperEyepatchWolf’s two videos “why you should read One Piece.” The best succinct videoed for people looking to be sold on One Piece

There is a huge misconception about One Piece! People often say they have no time for such big series, but hear me out! One episode is like 20min, often shorter because at the beginning there is usually a recap of the episode before and the opening so it took maybe approximately 17min to watch one episode of it. Yeah, sure, there are over 1000 episodes but no one asks you to watch like 100 episodes in a row. If you take your time and watch it in your pace it is a beautiful journey without stress. And yeah, people also often say: "But then I watch it like 3 years or smth!" I would say, it is better to watch a masterpiece 3 years than an okayish series for 2 weeks! During the series you won't ask when it will end, you will be thankful to have so many episodes instead! So, to all people who think One Piece is too long, give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

I'm telling you, there's good and bad in One Piece. Some fun stuff is over the top and yes, it takes some getting used to in places. It is maybe a lot of getting used to. But once you get used to it, you see that it also unites an infinite number of cultures, has allusions to all sorts of real life events and characters. (The good the bad the ugly, etc.) Endless depth of character forms, has a complex and extraordinary narrative structure and simply offers an overall cultural experience that no other medium has ever managed. Easter eggs and references at all ends and characters and stories that go right into your heart. The best world building maybe even in all of media. It is, discounting some of the over-the-top comedy and the sometimes tiring and length of the plot, the greatest story ever told. Rightly number 1 of all manga and ingrained so deeply in the hearts of the fans that it is inseparable. A must watch. The best story ever.

We of the One Piece fandom are use to the dismissal of some other Shonen Fans. And the way that some of the more vocal of the community can come at you side ways. I think its because some feel threatened by One piece. Others its just the Dismissal of anything that Competes or seems like it does with their favorite IP. But regardless. A Large Portion of One Piece fans (Especially long time fans as the Show grew more and more over time in popularity.) Have a desire NOT to act like that. Not all but most are just happy to share and talk about something they love. I am glad you are having a good time. Even if Not all of One piece is for you. :)

There is passage through the Blues and even the new world/grand line......they use sea stone on the bottom of their ships (typically a Marine Ship) and can pass through the part of the sea known as the calm bet.....which is a part of the ocean that has no wind and is also a breeding ground for Sea kings...... extremely dangerous part of the sea that divides the blues if I'm not mistaken.

While it will probably be quicker to actually read the entire manga then watching the entire anime series, I personally feel the anime is the better media for One Piece because of the added ambiance from the music, colour & movement. Some arc's & scenes in the manga could be confusing (i.e. the body switch segment) but are clear as day-light in the anime. Aswell as the natural progression of the anime's production quality has undoubtedly paid off in the most recent Wano arc. I highly recommend binging it in segments and finishing per arc's in case people want to take a break, it helps to keep track of things too.

English is second lang in almost all of modern countries. So most if not all japanese people can read in english. Also i think somwhere after WWII japanise lang go trough englification and a lots of everyday words in japanise are just english but with japan fonetics and accent. To understand how rich is this world. Most land in this world are islands. And a lot of them are very isolated. So there are whole cultures completly separated from anything else. You have wild west island in one place, futuristic city in other, one piece version of ancient egypt, or sla-ve colony that for generations build big bridge to who knows where. There is no japan but there is an island that is basicaly medieval japan on steroids. If Oda has some weird, wacky idea he just put another island somewhere on map. And this not colide with story and world.

you can watch one pace, it is a condensed form of one piece, it's like all anime episodes but without backtracks and fillers. It's divided by arcs and are about the same length as a movie some arcs are 10+ hours its a suggestion only tho, go at it at your own pace!

9:31 my mom did the same thing. Funnily enough, in the Viz official translation for the One Piece manga they changed Zoro's name to Zolo because of Zorro. Viz does a lot of other things that are like that unfortunately so I tend to read fan translations but will sometimes read both for comparison as it can be difficult to faithfully translate Oda's intentions when there's a bunch of similar ways to say the thing but they have minor differences that have very different implications.

Things being written in more than one language is actually extremely common in a lot of places. Anywhere that tourists go people try to use a lot of English. I live in South America and a lot of restaurants here either have English translations for each menu item or a completely separate menu all in English. I haven't been to Japan, but it wouldn't shock me if there are similar things there. One of my pet peeves here is that I speak fluent Spanish, but people will often go out of their way to accommodate me with English, even when it's obvious that my Spanish is much better. It's like damn it took a long time to learn this language and I'm trying to show respect by using it. Just let me use it.

In all honesty, considering how quickly it goes by, you could probably read the entirety of the current One Piece manga in the time it takes to, say, binge the Lord of the Rings trilogy three times. That is to say, it wouldn't be short, but it's probably not something that would take more than a weekend or three if you committed yourself to it.

Actually, it is very common in asian countries to have at least english and other language written on public and government spaces that foreigners would definitely pass through (ie. roads signs, airport signs, restaurant menus, all hotels, etc.) Most if not all Asian countries have English as their second language and some have Chinese as their third as those languages are the most commonly spoken in the world. So you can definitely go to Japan and not get lost as their subway and bus routes have English on them.

Hawaii, especially the city of Oahu, have a lot of signs with both English and Japanese written on them.
