The first video game system I ever saw or played. The Atari hits the nostalgia button on a xennial like me who grew up with an older brother. Join me as I give this OG a restoration, with a little Dragonfire gameplay thrown in at the end!

The date on the board: it was probably a board built in '82. New masks for 'boards are EXPENSIVE and once they had a working mask, they'd continue to use that mask until they were forced to make a revision to it... considering their success and their numbers, it was probably a fresh 'board built in '82 from the '80 revision mask.

I have a pretty rare Darth Vader with the "Not for resale, For promotional use only" hot stamped on the bottom of it

I remember people gluing the black handled sleeve back onto the white plastic because they would slide off. I bet that's what you ran into.

Restorish, your channel has brought a smile to my face. I also refurbish electronics. Got a Famicom that needs love and attention. I wish to see your channel grow! Also, that IPA dispenser you have is awesome!

@Restorish 2:02 Question. It is the PCB revision date. It was release in 1982, they started/finished development and pcb design in 1980.

Always so satisfying watching things get refreshed! You may want to invest in a good set of vehicle detailing brushes. They are stiff enough to clean, but gentle enough to prevent damage, and come in a variety of sizes!

It says 1980 because it's basically the same board as the 4 switch woody, which came out in 1980. I don't think much changed between them pcb wise. I don't think that atari really changed up the board until the 2600 jr, and by changed, I mean that they made it even cheaper. This was the last atari, specifically the 2600, that had reasonable build quality. Once they made the jr build quality, what right out the window because by that point, I don't think atari under Jack really cared outside of squeezing a little bit more money out of the system.

@8:25 Uh Oh you are breaking the bank and Steve's budget with all those used up cotton swabs. On a more serious note, why dont you just use a IPA / flux removal brush with stiff bristles usually will do the same thing and not use so many cotton buds? So a lot of times the rubber "sheath" would come out of the joystick exposing the white plastic "stick" underneath. I suspect the prior owner put the glue in there to hold it down from coming off the "stick" and just made a holy mess of it.

Good feedback, good idea, and good explanation of something that puzzled me. Good comment!

@@RestorishOfficial Happy to help with my extensive experience with game consoles. Have been doing the same thing you have been doing for years when I either clean and test them for sale OR add them to my collection. Either way I do enjoy your channel and giving you a hard time (all in good fun) but happy to add my input if its constructive. Keep up the good work.

Looks fantastic! Did the paint come off of the design on the top of the controller, or did Atari eventually stop painting the tops of controllers to save money? I know the 2600 had a ridiculous lifespan of 1977-1992
@RestorishOfficial
@RestorishOfficial 5 месяцев назад
I am not sure. I would expect there to be some paint visible still if it had just worn off.

Was wondering if you do viewer submissions. I have a switch oled that I really want to have a modchip installed, but I am clearly not skilled enough to do micro soldering and I see that you could do it. Just an ask for a favor and great video as always!
@RestorishOfficial
@RestorishOfficial 5 месяцев назад
I appreciate your vote of confidence in my skills, but micro soldering is outside of my current level of soldering experience. I mostly focus on cleaning, and have only done one mod video to this point. :)
