oh boy, you asked for it! Here is our tier list of popular gen z slang. Thanks to everyone who submitted some of your favorite phrases! Enjoy! Sam & Ryan
I thought gaslight girlboss & gatekeep are 3 entire different thing ? In my mind : Gaslight is to cheat or lie to get others to believe or do things of opposite intention Girlboss is self-explanatory ( empowering the female ) Gatekeep is to be so that at something that the person is near-impossible to defeat … 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@toveFW oh yeah, also I looked it up, and it was a word made by black youtuber, and it is a shortened version of the word "charisma", so you are wrong :) (And just cause it was made up by a black person doesn't mean it is aave)
Oh boy. As a high schooler, it's only reluctantly that the word slay has crept into my vocabulary. My parents and friends make fun of me for finally caving but it is a great word. And I do occasionally use slaps, mostly when referring to musical theatre songs that... slap.
I FULLY AGREE!! as a young gen Z kid i rlly didn’t want to cave with the rest of my grade but it just happened. my mom always laughs at me cause i’ll be like “omg this is slaps” or even- i have to admit “this song is a bop”
I'm glad you mentioned that most of it comes from black culture, specifically AAVE. Words like period, ate that, sis, bet, slay, ate, cap/no cap, all of those are aave
Can I just - “Every generation is an opportunity to outgrow what came before it but somehow sexism is alive and well.” MFLWOWHCKAD YES RYAN also ✨mid✨ love you guys sm 💗
|BEFORE I BEGIN| Many if not most "slang" words used by gen z originate from aave or gay culture, so please keep that in mind. NOW sus is also commonly used in a homophobic(?) way. guys my age use sus to call people gay. rizz comes from the word charisma. here are some common gen z words/saying u guys left out if u want to make another video: -drip (attractive clothing) -take several seats (be humble, calm down.) -living rent free in my brain (constantly on your mind) -altered my brain chemistry (affected you in a major way, but usually used for trivial things) -chronically online (someone who is online more than they are not, and you can tell) -touch grass (get a life) -situationship (more than talking but less than a relationship) -caught in 4k (caught doing something embarassing) -the ick (idk its just the ick) -npc (used in an often ableist way labelling people who are quiet or socially awkward as an "npc") -(insert word here)-core (the suffix of "core" can be applied to literally anything and basically means and aestheticized or romanticized view of that subject.) -its on sight (used in an exaggerated way meaning as soon as you see that person or thing you will attack them/it) -zesty (used in an often homophobic way to call someone gay) -nepo baby (used in a usually insulting way to celebrities who owe their careers to nepotism.) -the closet is glass (used to call people gay) -F (from press f to pay respects, used to sympathize with people -o7 (looks like a little guy doing a salute) -giggling, blushing, kicking my feet, twirling my hair. (i think the meaning is obvious.) -in my (insert word) era. (ex: in my flop era) -(blank) my beloved
@@solidsolid111 im well aware, but they already addressed this in the video. most terms used by teens today were either taken from aave or gay ppl. but that doesnt mean they arent still used by gen z and prevalent to the way we speak and interact. i never tried to make it seem like gen z INVENTED these saying, just bringing them up as they are commonly used by people my age.

(copy pasted) but ALSO yes i am white, but i never said that i, personally, use these sayings, bc i literally dont. they are just words and phrases that i see commonly used by other people my age. anyways, ill still edit the comment to state that most these sayings are aave.
The more I watch this video, the more I realize that they have no idea what a lot of these slang words are used for and honestly I love that. Made for good content.
Your guys smiling and making fun of gen Z(aka my generation) make me so happy. My birthdays tomorrow but my mom just told me my brother might have a brain tumor so thank you. This made me smile
I get it. My grandpa just was told he had a brain tumor a few weeks ago and it was my birthday a few days ago. My grandpa had surgery and got his removed, he had some complications but he’s recovering now. I hope everything’s ok! Happy birthday!
Love them but hate that my culture and words from my dialect are being paired with gen z seeing as my people created and have been using them words and terms within our dialect since the beginning.
I don’t think BIPOC folks are within their target audience bc as soon as I saw the title paired with the phrases in the thumbnail, I cringed. On the first day of Black History Month too..
@@felyne. EXACTLY ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH... :( i'm a theatre kid and i loved heathers in middle school so thats how i found this channel a year ago but dang looks like they aren't educated on this T-T
You guys are honestly just my comfort youtubers, like any time I'm having a bad day I can count on your videos to cheer me up :) And even when I'm having a good day and see you guys post, it just makes it a million times better. Thank you guys so much for always carrying my vibes
I feel like gen z slang is funny at times, but it just dies so quickly it's hard to keep up with it. 😭😭 Like come on friends, why do you have to kill my favorite slang words so fast.
This is not Gen Z slang...idk why we have to have this conversation every hour, but this is AAVE. African American Vernacular English that's constantly misused by suburban non-Black kids
"This isn't Gen Z slang, it's AAVE slang" - that's literally what every Gen Zer says when they're too embarrassed to admit that it really is their slang.
Saw this video and immediately knew it would be a good one. As a gen z, I can confirm that this slang is often used in day to day life and is essential to know if you genuinely want to understand this generation. Luv you Sam and Ryan, you always find a way to make me laugh. Also please do vibing, stan, drip, main character, and understood the assignment in the next video.
i honestly love it when you guys disagree on something, i think it would be really cool if you two did separate tier lists of things you disagree on (bonus if it’s musicals)
Rizz, slay and bet are my used. Rizz was used to ironically till the point where it became un ironic. I always tell my friends that they slayed or slayed the house boots down Houston I am DECEASED. I use bet as a challenge. “I can’t make that jump” bet “don’t send that text” bet
They already talked about that it’s not that deep anyway everything we say comes from somewhere and is a mix of multiple things. That’s how we got aave in the first place. Before that there were word similar or even exactly like it is today. Rarely anything is original so it’s not that important.
Honestly as a high schooler I was not expecting to actually use all these words because i 110% do some ironically but the only ones I don’t use are actually the names of the tears
so i love this and i get the whole like "facts never really means facts" but in my experience its not normally used after someone says their own opinion but more like in a conversation the same way "for real" is like as a way to say I agree with you
I don’t know if i was the only person to comment this suggestion and even if it wasn’t mine that they saw, seeing this come to fruition makes me so happy! I love your video they always light up my day! 😊❤
wait people actually use cheugy? that must be like the younger gen z kids because i'm in college, just graduated high school last year, and have literally never heard anyone use that except for when saying how stupid the word itself is
I kinda disagree with you guys on Facts. Because idk but I and people around me use it more as a response to something someone else said and not to confirm what you said yourself. Like we might say: Person 1: "The party last night was totally lame lol." Person 2: "Facts." It's still mostly used with opinions, but I think that's the irony of it. Kind of like saying "If you disagree you are objectively wrong".
all of sam and ryan's videos are bussin, no cap, and anyone who disagrees is sus, but like bffr, they eat and leave no crumbs sis, not to mention ryan's music are all bops, all his songs slap, it's a slay, but sam and ryan's community is serving and if you haven't subbed like bffr, don't be sus like that, like you can't say that samantha didn't eat in the guess the musical theater song in one second video, a gaslight gatekeep girlboss, facts, but ngl this video hit different, like expected a W, but this video takes the L, it was not giving, like that was not a slay for you, and low key...mid
Back in December, I was a part of my school’s Madrigal Dinner where we time travel to 1526 as the lords and ladies of the court and sing both Madrigal tunes as well as well known Christmas music as Madrigals. Our director always has 3 scenes in our script that changes per year, and this year was all about the “future”. The first scene had a trunk with a bunch of items, including an iPhone, AirPods, and a Pop-it. The second scene was all of the slang, with sus, mid, G.O.A.T., and TYSM, all included in a letter, and then we (the court) try and decipher what it means 😂 one of my favorite lines in the whole script was my friend saying “so, like it’s a little sus that we don’t have any figgy pudding yet?” And I got to attempt to define Mid by saying it was in the middle of doing something. Once we actually learned it, someone insulted the Jesters and called out their marriage (we got to have some fun with the script once we had it). Our last section for the future was all about the music, where a music box opens and plays songs from the future as Madrigals. The Girls got to sing Wanabee (Spice Girls) and the guys sang All-Star (Shrek). We also sang White Winter Hymnal from Pentatonix and learned the body percussion. Overall, Madrigals was super fun, I got lots of memories of the 2nd scene during this video 😂 Bit of a long story but it was super fun 😜
i’ve never been this compelled to write a comment before but this is just batshit wild to me. please educate yourselves and your audience on AAVE. the tiny mention of a lot of this stemming from Black/Queer culture is right and kind of you to mention but you simply glossed over it AND still used Gen Z slang in the title. y’all uploaded this on the first day of Black History Month too. just wild. SIDE EYE.
My first experience with simp was my frenemy/first (and so far only) boyfriend of two days. We broke up after two days, and he would ask me every other month or so if I still had a thing for him. It was pretty hilarious and cute at the time and retrospectively how obsessed he was with me.
Wow I learned a lot. I'm gen Z, but I stopped using social media in high school because I wasnt feeling appreciated about my art and gave up on my dreams. I didnt know some of these slangs existed. I use sus and bet tho, the only 2 words on here, a lot. I do play games so I get some socializing. Lolol
I use the word slay sometimes I usually use it when I’m saying something like “ slay I guess“ kind of like when people used to say “weird flex but OK” I use it like that sometimes and I go through periods where I use it more often
