Dr. Muhammad Moiz comes back on the podcast to break down Gender, Sexuality and Bio-essentialism.
How many of our notions around Gender And Sexuality are informed by our Colonial legacy? How many of them are based on bad science? How much of it is about control rather than science?
In this two hour conversation, we break down these ideas historically.
This is the first of our seven part special series in collaboration with the Pak-US Alumni Network titled, 'Conversations for Change', where we discuss pressing social issues, and have conversations about them with experts.
Dr. Muhammad Moiz is a public health specialist, and through his content questions ideas around Gender and Sexuality, whether it be the irresistible viral sensation 'Shumaila Bhatti' or the evocative sensation drag queen that is 'Phudina Chatni'.

I am secretly very proud to have spent some time with you in Lahore (when you were a young, bright full of spark and wisdom med studndf!) and continue to enjoy your presence online. I remember thinking ‘this kid will do something big’. What clarity and depth of thought! From culture to religion to history to past and current politics on top of the medical knowledge. You relay the depth of every emotion, thought and action so effectively. Your service to the voiceless minorities and your service to the new generation in widening their horizons is incredible. You will be entrenched and mentioned fondly in the history of Pakistan for generations to come.

Whenever I listen to Moiz, I feel like I live in a bubble where I haven’t even pondered about such topics. Nobody wants to really openly talk about such topics and I’m so grateful to Moiz that he speaks up and somehow pokes us to THINK. A really big thank you to Shehzad for introducing Moiz. Been following him since the first podcast!

Listening to Moiz helps viewers/ listeners like me to have a perspective, an opportunity to look at things from a point of view and most importantly it helps in thinking critically and urges me to research. I'd say, keep it going. Keep making the stuff you do. We are here to listen, to agree and disagree but most importantly we are able to think properly . Keep it going 💯

@@MuhammadMoiz91 I'm a huge fan but your unnecessary bashing of Whites to cater to desi mind set is totally uncalled for. Isn't it jealousy and frustration when we blame British colonization for all our political, social and economical backwardness? Colonization is the reason that we are not Afghanistan , today. Colonization gave us many benefits e.g English medium schools, roads, railways, bridges, water dams, industries, hospitals, courts, parliament a trained army and many things. Look at KPK and Baluchistan which were very loosely under the British control and for a shorter period of Time. Indian regions were under the British rule for over 190 years and one can see the difference between their education and industrial differences when we compare it to over 80% of princely states and tribal belts of Pakistani region. All kind of knowledge such as evolution, eugenics ,gender studies etc is searched experimented and written by the whites. This youtube, internet and Podcast is also white inventions. Blaming all whites for colonization done by great grand parents of British royal family is not nice.

Pakistan as a Country might have a lot of problem with their language imposition culture but I have to appreciate that a lot of people even from the ‘upper class’ want to consume content in their own language. In India people are mentally forced to have intellectual conversations in English. By doing this we are failing to reach a bigger audience.

@@user-nh5ke7ph5c aka Rajni Tiwari ( I do not knwo why this Hindutva changed her ID) You aborginals will never understand it. Karachi is the largest Urdu speaking city and it's our mother tongue. We didn't bring it from anywhere, we left behind some of it in Hindutva land so you aboriginals can also have a taste of its elegance and grace. Regardless of where Urdu came about, it is the language that was developed by the Muslim elites who were educated in Arabic and Persian literature. There is a reason why it was called Urdu e mualla (yeah, google it). For us it is ours. As far as the culture of aboriginals of Bihar and UP is concerned, no one will ever claim that filth. No one eat their food, no on wear their clothes, no one speak their primitive bhasha. I hope it's clear now.

He is a man here; I thought he was transgender, so basically he went through a journey smartly. In one of his online vlogs on Instagram, he said that he had no testicles by birth. He and his family were aware of intersex, but they tried to make him a man through medication which failed miserably and eventually, he had to be transgender-the only option he had because our society demands marriage at a certain of person. In order to shut them up, he pronounced that I had been transgender since birth. Though it's an uphill struggle to live with multiple personalities-saying this has stood the test of time-devoting his all energy to proving that what he is going to be solidified in the minds in advance so that his transition might be smooth like a royal rood, which has failed miserably.

@@DWAGON1818 not really. I am a medical doctor myself so I can see the ridiculous amount of research (at least from a medical point of view) that he has done, that most of us clinicians wouldn't even bother to do mostly because it's much easier to mindlessly follow text books and guidelines that we don't know the origins of. When he referred to the top hospital in Pakistan, I couldnt agree more because I work over there and the quality of research is deplorable to say the least. In summary, I would love to be mentored by the likes of Moiz, people who understand relevant and meaningful research (even if it seems as if he is justifying his 'lifestyle') :)

Bassss??? Baki ka kahan hai ??? Moiz thanks to talk about gender of God. Translation is often problematic because each language reflects its cultural background. I always had a problem when reading the translation of surah Ikhlas « na us ka koi baap hai na us ka koi beta » (the one I prefer is « na koi us ka jana hai na us ne kissi ko jana » ) and also with Christian trinity. most of people don’t understand that questioning the gender of god is not a feminist insecurity. The image of Allah as a darhi wala baba is stuck to our minds since childhood. And the message it gives to me is men are closer to God, and should not be questioned. But since I’m completely fucked up, mujhe sawal bhi karna hai aur shikwa bhi The brief introduction of colonial strategy is brilliant 🙏

1. Digital Library of India - Google it you'll get the site and also many other related sites. (not National Digital Library - that's for increasing access to books for everyone) 2. Sa'yida Sheikh - her books are amazing but their language is very very anthropological. This is one article that she wrote on Divinity and the appreciation of the feminine in Islam. It's a good starting point. tif.ssrc.org/2019/05/27/allah-hidden-treasures-and-the-divine-feminine/ 3. This is the link to the inflection on Quranic Arabic paper. It's a little jargony but you'll get the core point. www.cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/4452/5780 4. Another study, an actual experimental study, that states my point that religion CAN be a tool for progress but isn't simply because we've left the field empty for regressive folks to build narratives around religion. My argument is in favour of post-secularism - more on that some other day. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0010414015626452

Dr. Sims' legacy is equal parts horror and privilege. For decades, the statue of this man who performed painful surgeries on enslaved black women without anesthesia stood in Central Park, across from the New York Academy of Medicine. It finally came down in 2018.

Surprisingly, despite being a doctor, having interned in OBGYN, and having cleared my first exam for a membership of the Royal College of OBGYN, I found about Sim's crimes in the USA during a class on "Race, Health, and Ethics". Nowhere in our curriculum, wards, books, exams, or anywhere like that was it taught. At all. This is what I call the whitewashing of science. We read the results, not the methods through which those results were attained.

@@MuhammadMoiz91 I first stumbled upon his name in an intro to Women's studies class in my undergrad in the US. It was taught by an African-American prof which is why I suspect she chose to highlight it. I came across it again recently because of an Instagram account I follow call African Archives. I feel it is so important to know how truly whitewashed history is and the need to course correct, now more than ever.
