I work at an alteration shop, and it's surprising just how many people don't know the bare minimum about clothes in general, but even their own clothes. Our consumerism and fast fashion culture have really separated people from the true value and workmanship of clothing.
I work in customer service for a fashion brand and so many people don’t know this. It’s also very common that people don’t know basic things about washing clothes or that it’s perfectly normal for any wool to pill. Synthetic fabrics and fast fashion that gets thrown away whenever it breaks really have done everyone a huge disservice I feel like. Therefore, thank you for sharing this simple tip!
The one time i bought something that had pockets sewn shut and I opened them up, it turned out that even though there WAS a pocket inside, it was only about an inch deep 😭 functionally useless to me, and definitely made me feel like i shouldn’t have even bothered opening them up. Thankfully this isn’t the case most of the time, but it was definitely an unlucky find.
First time I realized pockets were tacked shut on a jacket, I was preparing to open up the lining so I could extend the pocket bag to take my phone. There was enough space between the welt opening and the bottom of the garment. Let's make this a jacket I'll actually wear! Because a perfect drape on a hanger isn't worth anything. Taking out the shipping stitches was so successful, I went from having a welt with a backing, to a welt with a pocket large enough to fit a tissue. But it gave me more to attach the replacement pocket bag to - so I guess that was a win?
