Gene and guitarist Kent Allyn perform Gene's 1961 song as part of Arts in Reach, an important community arts program that works to empower teenage girls through mentoring and the arts. (www.artsinreach.org)
It was the first day we met him, we worked with him for two weeks and got to know him a lot better, we grew to love him, and we were all very sad when he passed.
Its 2020 and I'm still listening. Gene is as handsome and his voice just as smooth and beautiful as ever. He had a dignity that reminds me of Sidney Poitier.
2023 and this song popped in my head outta no where so I had to look it up so I could share what I was singing around the house. Found this video. Man he was fabulous . This crowd didnt even know how blessed they were. What a beautiful voice
I remember this day very well! It was a hot, early morning that we got to listen to Mister Gene McDaniels and Mister Kent Allyn and personally I loved the good time we had. I'll never forget the experience we'd been given. Many of us were nervous with these amazing people here in front of us. I remember wondering if we could really relate to those that were so successful and known. But I was taken aback by just how warm all of them were! It was definitely a learning experience, and a reminder that even widely respected, successful, and known people who seem far away from reach are still actually /people/; genuine feeling, heart, flesh and blood. Gene was an amazing and creative person. He was also very kind and very friendly, and getting to work with him, Kent, Dennis, and Shannon was absolutely amazing. Thank you Gene for the inspiration that helped get our creativity flowing, Kent for the support and the willingness to work with everyone individually to help them flesh out their own creative style as well as melding our styles together, Shannon for thoughtfully bringing us all together and making it possible for us to have such a childhood memory, and Dennis for the enthusiasm that /kept/ us all together and the life lessons he gave us. I think I speak for many of the girls here when I say that this experience we had was truly one of the bright highlights of a lifetime.
We have several folks in residential nursing retirement houses who have talent and ready for you to come visit them with your gifted talent, that means you! really. I will die in my easy chair at my owned house and let the city & bank have my property tax to give back to the arts, missions and God thankyou
These girls were priviledged to see a great singer like Gene McDaniels whose voice had lost little over the years. I was sad to read on here of his passing. I had been playing two of his albums today and I came on youtube to see or hear any other songs I didn't have by him. RIP Gene, your voice was superb and you looked like you were a right nice guy.
I was there during this! Ahh, gene was (and still is!) the coolest person ever. He was so nice, and so genuine, and I even got to record a few songs with him(: it was amazing! Rest in Peace, Gene, us AIR girls love & miss you
NICE THAT YOU GUYS (LADIES) GOT TO HEAR HIM SING AND THE LYRICS ARE SO VERY POIGNANT FROM THIS WONDERFUL MAN/PERSON ! GOOD IS JUST GOOD AND EVEN IF HE WERE SINGING A PHONE BOOK ! OH SORRY, HOPE YOU KNOW WHAT THOSE ARE/WERE TOO? NUMBER #1 HIT IN 60 or 61 I THINK AND AN ALL TIME GREAT TUNE R.I.P. MR GENE ✌🏼💔
This was the second 45 I ever bought. To this day I still think of Gene as one of the truly great singers of his day. More people need to know this man and his music! Thanks for posting this.
So glad to see him again. I'm 80 and just loved his music and brings back all those memories and times so long gone.. I'm from Australia and just saw clip singing Another tear falls and reminds me of my hubby of 60yrs passing away 6 yrs ago then to read now Gene too has passed away too..now I'm really in tears?.pity some radio stations don't play all this great music to new generations to enjoy....RIP..
Here's a very fine performance by Gene at 75 years old, with excellent assistance from guitarist Kent Allyn. Gene sounds great and looks great. It's difficult for me to envision that only a year later Gene would be gone. RIP.
I was 10yrs old when first heard this on the radio in 1961 in my dads 59' Dodge station wagon. I loved it the minute I heard it and I love it even more today. Thanks for the memories Mr. McDaniels
Almost a half-century later, and Gene McDaniel's still KILLS it with his magnificent God-given vocal talent. God bless him. What a great artist. Fantastic. Wow! I LOVED this.
This was one of the first records I ever bought when I was 10 years old in 1961. He still sounded great and I wished I could have been there to let him know how much joy his songs still give. A wonderful video...RIP, Gene.
I love what age has done for his voice. It's warmer, and more natural. That might just be the comparison of the way music was produced in the 50s and 60s. Good guy.
These girls had no idea who this man was and by not knowing could not enjoy the beauty of his music. His voice is beautiful. You could hear the same voice in him but just in a lower tone. BEAUTIFUL.
One of the songs that helped me, as a 14 year old new to this country without my family, to make my life more bearable. Thank you so much Mr. McDaniels.
I will never forget seeing him at Maidstone Granada, England, in 1961 with Johnny Burnette and US Bonds. I still play his songs constantly - what a voice!
hi caitlin, so nice to have your comments. gene loved doing the workshop and was very happy with the song and video, and especially enjoyed his time with all of you. hope you are doing well!
That was a wonderful duet. I only had a 3 or 4 of your records when I was about 15/16..but I got to see you a couple of times in the movie 'Its Trad Dad' and your rendering of 'Another Tear Falls' totally stood out. Saddened to read of your passing but the legacy of yourself & your gifted voice on record will all be kept alive and never forgotten. RIP Gene.
I have loved this tune since I was a grade-schooler! Along with Tower of Strength. Wore my Mother's 45's out. So thrilled to see him in his last years! I still listen to these tunes incessantly! I'm near tears at finding this video clip. RIP
@@charmq777 Interesting you should ask. This was the very first tribute impression I ever performed, over 750 videos ago, in 2009! It was singing along to Gene's original hit while driving in my car that gave me the inspiration!
I always listened to Mr McDaniels as child on up. I just found out he's with his Father in Heaven. I still listen to his outstanding music. I miss him so much 😢. RIP Mr McDaniels 🙏
@@robertmeadows2432 Uh, I still don't know the express need for it in this day and age. I think it's as nice a song now as then. The message to me isn't terribly profound but moreso catchy.
I'm jealous that i wasn't there to see this amazing performer sing this wonderful song live. I'm a 69yo Aussie male & can vividly remember hearing all of Gene's records on the radio & loving them all. In my opinion Gene & Sam Cooke possessed the most magnificent voices of our time. They will always be remembered by their many fans>
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've just stumbled upon this video ten years after the fact. Having spent over forty years in radio, more than a few as a DJ. I've always wondered why Gene McDaniels' body of work was not more revered. Would love to hear that voice doing standards, ala Nat King Cole among others. Thank you again!
I did a 2 year tour in Libya. Went into a bar in North Carolina and this is the first song I had heard in the states in 2 years. It was March of 1961. One of my all time favorites from that era.
Wow, Joe, that is amazing. I was only 14, but Gene was one of my favorite singers. I had all his albums (and about 25,000 others) but I finally sold them a couple years ago. If I had a buck for every time I played that tune, I probably could cure cancer with the money. Those lucky gals were surely picked by Jesus, and I know the Holy Spirit was in the room with them.
Gene McDaniels was one of the best! in mid 70' s, I hear on radio what's considered Oldies music by then, his smooth delivery and philosophy on love & women kept me out of a troubled "doghouse",, really
wow! Fantastic! This brought back the memory of when I was 9 years old and my father brought home the Hit Parade magazine and I was SO happy reading the lyrics to 100 Pounds of Clay. Will always love Gene's music.
God blessed you, Gene Mc Daniels, you inspired me and many others. You payed the ultimate price for an artist for taking the truth to the people. You stood tall and resolute.
Simply amazing that 50 years later Mr. McDaniels would be in such fine voice singing his song that I use to sing too, back in 1961 when I was 13 years old and the "sweet bird of youth" was still in me. Thank you Mr. McDaniels.
Why would these female students would not understand the greatness they are seeing? The faces of these girls suggest they are normal like everyone and that they understand EVERYTHING.
My friends and I used to play this record quite frequently although neither of us was around in 1961. It's just a great song. His dad had it in his collection and we fell in love with it way after the fact.
That was beautiful Gene.Your songs were special then and they are still special to this day.You were a big part of my rock and roll teenager years.I bet our Creator likes your music and is probly listening to you right now. Will miss you......Louis
Thanks for the posting it, Mr. McDaniels. Since I´m already here, thank you for your great contributions to the wolrd of music. From a fan from the very south of Brazil!
The comment below from Josh is spot on... Hand clapping in time is required when you are in the presence of musical royalty.. Filmed just a year before Gen's untimely passing in 2011
oh and I always loved that song a hundred pounds of clay it just goes to show a song can be simple but very meaningful along its way, god bless you sir, it’s time we all get back to the basics of life in a very meaningful way and let’s put more love and feeling in our love for one another.
Your first 45! I'm so glad you posted (mine was 'Oh Julie' by the Crescendos). The lyrics tell such a wonderful love story, and there was such a gentleness in his voice. R.I.P. Gene.
