The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Gene's one and only appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. He was one of the big names in the early days of rock and roll, most famously known for his huge hit, "Be Bop a Lula". Some very early split screen special effects here! Thank you for this rare clip!

In France a survey dated Dec 63 rated Gene No.1 Foreign singer: (2. Eddie Cochran, 3. Elvis, 4.Vince Taylor & 5.Buddy Holly). Old Rockers were better appreciated in France than in US.

@sMansGuitars yes it was Jack Good. Because Gene limped he tried to create a kind of Richard the Third character. He spent a lot of time in France in the 60s because most people in Britain & the USA were no longer interested in his music ..

This is the only time I could remember Ed Sullivan doing a split-screen. I wonder if Gene was actually performing live on the show. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and the dancers were filmed separately, then edited and played back on the broadcast night.

Gene Vincent had an injured left leg due to a 1955 motorcycle accident. He wore a brace most of his adult life. Kinda interesting how The Clapper Boys' manic chorography works with his performance.

It's interesting that Ed Sullivan made sure that Elvis was filmed from the waist up during his third and final appearance on the show but allowed Gene Vincent's backup singers to be shown shaking their hips even more vigorously than Elvis ever did on the Ed Sullivan Show.

High energy and they did this live! Great rock and roll/rockabilly band that moved with some rhythm and soul. Lotta Lovin even charted on the R and B charts in 1957. Only the dance moves by the backup singers resemble Elvis. Vincent and the Blue Caps had their own sound and brand of rock and roll. Vincent was a "greasier" version of Elvis which turned off the mass public in the States except the deep South where he came from. Most rockabilly singers like him went into country music especially after the Beatles hit.

What you talking about? It’s obvious from his first hit Be bop a Lula that he is influenced massively by Elvis the melody of the song is taken from Elvis’s Money Honey, the vocal style the hiccups the yell the shouts is all based on Elvis, Eddie Cochran is the same he’s the first Elvis impersonator
@harvey1954
@harvey1954 11 месяцев назад
@@scouseronthewirral Eddie Cochran was hardly like Elvis. I love Elvis's 50s stuff, but Eddie could play guitar like few others. He was doing studio session at 14. Totally different sounding vocals too. Cochran wasn't saddle with a Col.Tom Parker.
