I an over 70, and cannot see very well, but I can hear and then write. However. when the teacher says ºThen we put this here. and that there" I have no idea of what THIS and THAT and HERE and THERE are. I am lost and cannot take correct notes. If. on the other hand, the teacher says "We put SECONDS in the NUMERATOR. and we place the number 1609 in the DENOMINATOR,, then everything becomes clear. The teacher is actually doing a very good job, but the power points (or whatever medium is used), while they may be sufficiently large in the physical classroom, become miniscule when they come across a RU-vid screen. I am not writing this to criticize the current course -- which I applaud and for which I thank you from the bottom of my heart (this is great. high quality FREE education -- like it can be in an ideal world); I am writing this as, I hope, a guide which will help make this type of class even better the future. Thank you so much!

It would have been helpfull if she explained WHY the intro math is significant and why one will need to care about such details for chem. Without this proper roadmaping students will spend too much mental energy guessing at the end point of all of it, and that mental churning takes away from understanding the details.

Suppose you want to go on a road trip, and you know that your car has a range of "500 km" with a full tank. By studying a map, you determine that your route is 490 km long. 500 km is greater than 490 km, so that means you can just fill up the tank at the beginning, and then drive the whole way with stopping, right? Of course that's not actually a safe thing to do, because the uncertainty of the car's range is large: depending on the route, the weather, your driving style, etc. that "500 km" might really mean 450 km or 550 km. Similarly, the true length of the route depends upon how many wrong turns you take, whether you stop for a meal, whether you drive on the inside or outside lane in each curve, etc. So, the route might *really* be 510 km, for all you know. When the numbers are close like that, you need a safety margin - in this case, that means stopping for gas once even though you in theory you have enough range that you shouldn't need to. This kind of problem arises all the time in any quantitative science, including chemistry. The rules of "significant figures" are just a convenient way to track (very roughly) the level of uncertainty in your numbers, so that you can make intelligent decisions about what kind of safety margins are needed, or whether a discrepancy between the results you expect, based on theory, from an experiment are significant enough to be worth investigating further. As for dimensional analysis - one of the main themes of the "hard" quantitative sciences like chemistry and physics is the use of numerical measurements to compare things, and the use of mathematical formulas to predict or understand the behaviour of systems. Suppose I tell you that I weigh "170". What does that mean? The answer depends upon what units I attach to that number: If I say, "170 pounds", it means I have a normal, reasonably healthy weight for an adult male. If I say, "170 kilograms", it means that I'm morbidly obese. If I say, "170 centimetres", it means that I didn't understand the question. Dimensional analysis is an essential skill because without it, you can't understand how to use scientific formulas correctly. You also won't be able to compare values that are given to you in different units.
@obadiyah364
@obadiyah364 8 лет назад
Right. One of the ways to explain to students WHY something is important with is mutiple examples of what goes wrong if they don't learn the concept. Sometimes teaching what can go wrong is a better lead because it ties students into why the idea is worth them giving effort to follow.

How is 23x436 = 1.0x10^4, 4 sig figs, since she earlier stated that 4.20 x10^3 is 3 sig figs...? Is the sig figs from the actual decimal number or the exponent's value?
@codybishop722
@codybishop722 8 лет назад
she says its two sig figs. Sig figs are from the decimal number not the exponents value. Remember when multiplying, you need the lowest amount of sig figs represented by the equestion in this case, 23 has two sig figs. Since the solution was over 10k with multiple sig figs, she rounded 10k and used exponentials to show 1.0; two sig figs.

Yes, High School regular chemistry. Problem is that most kids that get to UCI have taking chemistry as their freshman or sophmore year in high school and often there is an element of study for the test rather than for learning... this makes it so that we forget most of what we have been exposed to. Some of these concepts are taught as early as 3rd and 4th grade.

I wanted to do my bachelors in chemistry back in 2007 but my parents, seeing me good in chemistry, forced me into chemical engineering. I failed the first semester hard. Ended up switching to business and now I work as a banker. I still remember my chemistry quiet well. Also in college, we had to take a course in chemistry and I got an A without attending any class and NOT even using the book. Just sat for the quiz and exams and wrote whatever I remember. Got an A (100/100) not even a 99/100. If I can go back in time, I'd study chemistry but been working for 6 years and almost turning 30. I feel it is late for now.

I love science, don't get me wrong. I had so much money saved I was thinking about investing in education all over again in Science (or even engineering since my physics is now very good - I still read science books and solve problems from the textbook). However, I took that money and invested in a house and stocks/bonds. Making a lot of money and able to travel. Haha I know, I thought the same thing too, she did the calculations wrong Ag 107 is 55.47 and Ag109 is 52.50 which gets you a total of 107.97

It is, but so many teachers are absolutely horrible at what they do. I'm watching this because I was so done taking extra classes and tutoring with horrible teachers, and I need to know these very basic concepts for when I go into college this fall.

All I did was pause it when I got confused and then rewind it again so I could understand. It's very simple when you rewind it and listen again; I also recommend turning your volume up very high so you can listen better. These are advice from me, have fun
