In July 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower played a crucial role in the Allied liberation of France during World War II. Here are some key events and aspects of General Eisenhower's activities in France during that time: 1. **Normandy Landings (D-Day):** On June 6, 1944, Eisenhower oversaw the largest amphibious invasion in history, commonly known as D-Day. Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, in a massive operation aimed at establishing a foothold in Western Europe and eventually liberating France from German occupation. 2. **Battle of Normandy:** Following the successful D-Day landings, Eisenhower continued to coordinate Allied operations in Normandy. The Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June to August 1944, involved intense fighting as Allied forces pushed inland and engaged German forces in a series of battles and offensives. 3. **Liberation of Paris:** One of the significant milestones during Eisenhower's time in France was the liberation of Paris. In late August 1944, after weeks of fierce fighting and strategic maneuvers, Paris was liberated from German control. This event marked a symbolic victory for the Allies and boosted morale among the French resistance and the Allied forces. 4. **Strategic Planning and Coordination:** Throughout his time in France, Eisenhower was involved in strategic planning, coordination of Allied forces, and decision-making regarding military operations. He worked closely with Allied commanders, including British General Bernard Montgomery and American General George S. Patton, among others, to ensure the success of the liberation campaign in France. 5. **Post-War Planning:** In addition to military operations, Eisenhower also participated in discussions and planning for the post-war period. This included considerations for the occupation of Germany, rebuilding Europe after the war, and shaping the political landscape of post-war Europe. Overall, General Eisenhower's leadership and strategic acumen played a crucial role in the successful Allied campaign to liberate France and ultimately defeat Nazi Germany in World War II. His contributions in France during July 1944 were part of a larger effort that led to the Allied victory in Europe.

I am a huge admirer of General Eisenhower, and I also consider him to be the best president in my lifetime, by a wide margin.

I think it's great the way that Eisenhower greeted and shook hands with everyone from privates to generals.

I cannot think of any other general who could have managed the supreme command as he did. He had to deal with the biggest swelled heads in history and have them all pulling in the same direction. Dwight Eisenhower was a very intelligent man.

No sound. This was made with the windup portable cameras the cameramen carried with them. Sound effects on newsreels seen in theaters is added in the studio. This is raw unedited footage.
