General Motors tries to retaliate against Ralph Nader after he shines a light on the company’s alarming lack of safety regulations.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Ralph Nader is practically the Platonic ideal of a public servant. His efforts have saved many thousands of lives over the course of his lifetime, but he gets almost no recognition for any of it.
@infantjones
@infantjones 5 лет назад
He also prevented the replacement of fossil fuel burning in the US for decades by massively amplifying the anti nuclear power movement, claiming nuclear power would advance overpopulation and convincing people that nuclear reactors could explode like nuclear bombs, and spreading theories that there was a conspiracy among the scientific community to downplay the dangers of nuclear reactors despite still today it consistently being shown to be the safest form of power by far. Millions of lives have been lost to the coal, oil, and gas burned to provide power that was planned to be replaced by nuclear reactors, but got blocked by Nader's lobbying bloc. It was effectively the equivalent to global warming denialism for its time and has directly contributed to the crisis currently at hand.
@Theomite
@Theomite 5 лет назад
@@infantjones Kind of a fair point, but as of yet we STILL don't have a viable high-yield replacement for fossil fuels that isn't radioactive, so I don't think it really matters all that much. Now, if we had discovered zero-point energy within a few years of Nader's efforts, then I would agree with you.
@infantjones
@infantjones 5 лет назад
@Theomite Why is it being radioactive relevant? That's not exactly a big issue. Nuclear power was then and still is the cleanest, safest, and most reliable form of power available.
@graceshiflett6526
@graceshiflett6526 5 лет назад
aka the best kind of recognition. IDK about you, but I'm not in favor of a power system that creates waste byproducts so bad we have to jam them into a mountain, and come up with ways to tell people to stay away from it for 10,000+ years
@infantjones
@infantjones 5 лет назад
@Grace Shiflett Every source of power produces waste, nuclear produces the least waste by every metric, and as such is very easy to control. This is exactly why nuclear power has the least deaths per unit of energy of /any/ power source by a wide margin. Lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc. from the mining and production process for solar panels, for example, is immensely more voluminous and far less controlled, while being just as dangerous as nuclear waste on a gram-per-gram basis. These leech into groundwater and slowly poison people, not to mention all the other harms from the massive mining industries required to sustain wind and solar power production. Nuclear power is the ONLY power source where we're able to completely control all of its resultant waste, which is a huge advantage. Further, the idea that they need to be dealt with for thousands of years is nonsense, within a few generations they're barely any more dangerous than naturally occurring concentrations of high-grade uranium ore. Within just 50 years of a fuel bundle being removed from a reactor, its radioactivity is down to only 1% of its initial value. Lead, arsenic, and cadmium are just as dangerous 10 million years down the line as they are at 1 year.

True story: I grew up in Winsted, Connecticut. Seven houses down from us was Rose Nader, Ralphs mother. She went to our church and taught me how to make Lebanese bread. His sister lived across from their mother. (She drove a yellow-or-white Volvo 240) A man in Winsted (or nearby town) who owned a baby blue Corvair would drive up and down Hillside Ave, whenever Ralph’s Porsche was in front of his mothers house, as a form of protest to what he considered a great car. He would do U turns in front of Hinsdale Elementary and drive by again and again. I have never met him, but I sure would like to. *side note: His grandniece was onboard the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, (Boeing 737 MAX) which ironically was caused by deregulation of the aviation industry.

bigmedge Yeah, deregulation of the CDC has done wonders for the US’s pandemic response... 😒 At least flying is... oh wait, the newest 737 Max was grounded after over 350 people were killed. At least deregulating Wall Street didn’t have any drawback-, oh wait, there was that pesky economic recession in 2008. Do you have any examples that don’t end in deaths or economic disaster?

Ralph Nader has personally autographed my copy of his books "Unsafe at Any Speed" and "Crashing the Party", both of which I have read. I am proud to have spoken with him personally once, 2008 May 31, for a fundraiser for his presidency (I gave him $50), held at a home in Princeton, NJ. I met him in person at that same home years before that and once more in December 2009 at a bookstore in Princeton. My family and I are proud to have voted for him for POTUS in 1996, 2000, and 2004, and 2008.
