Doctors jobs have become simplistic in recent times. They work by listening to you tell them about your issue. They ask some questions to help get more information or narrow down the problem domain. Then they consider what is the most likely underlying problem. They may ask some more questions to confirm their early diagnosis. Once they've concluded their 'consultation' they look up a book that tells them what type of drug to prescribe. They then write a prescription for the version of that drug that they're getting kickbacks for. Job done. Should be easy to get an AI to do this.
Doctors are overburdened with admin tasks here in Switzerland - in hospitals they offload that work to students who spend around 80% of their internships on pushing papers, they don't even get to diagnose anything. AI would be a game-changer for medical studies but most hospitals are not IT-enabled at all. Implementing AI will be a steep learning curve.
I feel I'm part of history. In the late 70's I worked for Intersil in Sunnyvale in the technical writing department. My future husband designed the mainframes for IBM. It's a proud feeling.
For anyone doubting the AI hype, Malcolm Gladwell getting involved should deepen your concerns. His BS booklets like “The Tipping Point” and “Blink” have provided banalities suitable as profundities for executive retreats for years now. I can’t wait to see him do for Computer Science what he has done for Psychology. Also note he is shilling for IBM- not exactly the vanguard of technology. If it weren’t so sad, it would be funny.
