Matt DesLauriers, an artist and freelance creative coder, talks about his passion for generative art - searching for inspiration, exploring open tools and workflows, and finding his own path within the field. Learn about conceptual art, pen plotters, light installations, and how print artworks can be created with JavaScript and the web platform. Matt breaks down some of the algorithms and processes involved in his work, providing you with the building blocks to create your own generative art.

Really great to get a peek at the creative process. I loved the high-level walkthrough for "reflect" towards the end - That's favourite of mine!

Wow, one of the best lectures I've seen on this topic! I've built my own pen plotter and bound to finish the second one (full color with pen-switching) soon and am getting into programming more and more so this lecture really helped opening my view. Thanks a lot for sharing!

I just came across your comment and was curious. How have your experiments with creative coding been going?

@@PunmasterSTP Hej! Thank you for asking :) In the past year I’ve coded around 50 different projects both in Java (using Processing) and JavaScript (mostly to create generative websites). I’m currently using the knowledge I gathered to create a rather complex “information design” poster. I’ve also had the chance to develop some interactive vjing project for a few parties around Switzerland as well as an interactive artwork for a light festival near Zürich. In the future I would love to learn more languages and maybe try to create a fun little AI. While writing all that I realized that I’ve transformed into a nerd in the past year ^^ What about you?

I really want to try using a pen plotter to do wireframe reference sketches for doodling over and see where i can go with that. i think it would be fun to mix some of these techniques with traditional drawing

9:36 lower left image is dope. Like this a lot. Scientific presentation of a biological landscape developed and drawn by a machine. Nature can by so naughty :)!

This reminds me of Sonnie from I-Robot drawing a picture of his dream... I found that sci-fi years ago when I saw the movie and now it's become reality, and this is just the tip of the iceberg!

I really appreciated when he explained the work progress of the Reflection Series. Altough I dont code, I was still able to kind of translate what he explained into Illustrator and Photoshop "language" which made it possible for me to recreate them!

This reminds me of flash coding that people were doing 20 years ago, but now it is just code.

You cannot call yourself an artist or the work as your if an algorithm made it. If you generated it from your creativity then it's yours

This man is not an artist. Data-driven images are cool to look at, but they're emotionally empty and flaccid. They are boring and monotonous. There is nothing personal of the creator in them - Only data - So there is _nothing_ that can be gained by examining them. There is nothing to take out of them because there is nothing in them to begin with.

"... There is nothing to take out of them because there is nothing in them to begin with... ". No need for data to get that. That applies to many so called human artists.
