In both cases it must be switched on manually. Only the change over switch can auto switch on, but the generator must be turned on manually.

@@mangalaabewardana197 as said by EL Tronic above, you’d want the female side on the generator, so that if the generator is unplugged, you don’t have live conductors exposed. Otherwise you could run that generator and use the end of the lead as a cattle prod.
