Are these city divisions origins of the Contrade that I noticed when going around tuscany last month? I was wondering about them. I saw them in San Gimigniano, Montepulciano, and most famously Siena, each with their own flag and colours.
Yes and no. The definition of a contrada varies from city to city, but in Siena they are a subdivision of the terzieri (in Siena they're called "Terzi"). It wasn't used in the beggining as a political entitity, but mainly started appearing to distinguish the areas of the people going to a specific church in the city. Later it just became a symbol of distinction from the other citizens and also a useful administrative tool to locate people or places. So the contrade mainly exist because people always loved being unique and distinct, I guess. x)
