This song is a such an 800lb gorilla of a track. You can hear the echoes of it in the best modern prog and metal bands. Check out the song The Last Baron by Mastodon from their album Crack The Skye. In fact just go end to end on the album. It's pretty heavy, so maybe not to your taste, but it's probably their best full length, and easily the best progressive metal album of all time.

Brilliant track, I think they played this at Maple Leaf Gardens in the early mid 80s and was still amazing!

Considering this was the first album without Peter, a new style was obviously on the cards but what they ended up with was an absolute masterpiece.

Phil may not have been technically the greatest drummer ever, but man he plays his heart out here and he is so insanely creative. There is some high energy wickedness about his ideas, they are extremely inspired and two of my favorite pro drummers where I live state that Phil as the reason they started picking up the drum sticks.

What are you saying?? I play drums since 30 years, so may have some knowledge about techniques. He was a brilliant drummer in his prime. His use of rudiments across limbs on the kit, clever time signature grooves, fast feet.... I don't know what else to say...

@@Rondo2ooo same here. I play the drums as well, my main instrument is the piano and I'm arranger for 40+ years. Did I say in any way, shape or form that Phil doesn't know his rudiments and rolls? I love Phil and bus drumming. He will very likely admit that there are drummers who are technically superior, but his approach, sound groove and musical fills are unique and absolute killer.
