A quite underrated Genesis song and the reprise on Duke's Travel is IMO one of the best Genesis moments.

I hear you, Fabrizio! Loud and clear.

You're right, I have to play that dukes travels as loud as I can to get the full effect.

I agree. I love " Guide Vocal " also...It seems to be a cross between a complete song to an interlude and a bridge. One thing that I've noted with Genesis is their amazing creativity. Take something like " Los Endos for example. It's a brilliant outro of the whole album. It contains all the themes from all the songs that it follows. When it comes to music Genesis is on another level than most of other bands. One of my favorite bands ever, anytime, anyplace. 🙂

Johan. The song, including the lyric, was written by Banks. It's Banks's interpretation of what Gabriel said to the band when the latter announced to them that he was quitting Genesis, or at least how Banks understood and felt Gabriel's message. The liner notes even have a drawing of a flower next to this title, a flower being one of Gabriel's most famous stage costumes with Genesis.

Interesting. I now must hear this song again. It has always had a mysterious quality, mostly due to the lyrics and the angry tone; but also the melancholy melody. Glad to see this tune get some consideration because it has charmed and puzzled me since first hearing it. And yes, as usual, Phil brings it!

I agree about the topic regarding someone who left the band, even because the song is strictly linked with "Duchess", which is the metaphore of the band. But: "Nobody must know my name" makes me think of some sort of "ghost-writer" of the band, who guided a bunch of talented young musicians throughout the show-biz keeping himself in the dark...

"Duke" is a record that accompanied me through one of the saddest periods of my life, after breaking up with my first girlfriend. One of the most emotional records I've ever heard; and "Guide Vocal" is the song which often led me to tears, eventhough I could never figure out what the lyrics are about. I must also say that I never listened to this song on it's own, as it's a part of a suite, along with "Behind The Lines", "Duchess", "Turn It On Again", "Duke's Travels" (where you can hear a reprise of "Guide Vocal" that sounds even more sad than the original, especially when it changes the tempo with the line "... and you fear what you don't understand...") and "Duke's End".

Hi you should do Stagnation from Trespass. Has there ever been a song with so many melodies that are never repeated.

Before understanding the connection of Duchess, Guide Vocal & Turn it On, i.e. young women & older teacher, I thought of this as an alternate "Last Supper/Gethsimitie"; with an angry, hurt, Jesus chastising his Apostles.

A lot of people think this was Phil Collins talking about his marital problems as he does on Face Value (recorded around the same time) - particularly the line, "Take what's your's and be damned." But Banks wrote the lyrics so it wasn't!

just asking out of context... comparing genesis b-side "do the neurotic" to "jesus he knows me" I hear the same drumpart... if not even the very same recording. would be interesting to know if my ears betraying me on that

Well, my friend, the are very much alike! However, Phil plays the ride cymbal on "neurotic", but the hi-hat on "jesus". "Neurotic" is also a bit faster than "jesus". So, my conclusion is that they are not the same recording. Thanks for your interesting comment!
