@@jipangoo retrieving archive from old tapes/drives costs money. I could set up a patreon account but that would exclude non-payers. This way , nobody here is paying for this stuff unless they choose to.
@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES I'm curious and maybe you could help me out. Do interviews cost money? Does the interviewer have to pay people like Roger Waters for his time?
@@jipangoo I personally never expect to pay star musicians. And I never have. I know some production companies do pay if it’s the only way they can get access
@lukaf2393 Very well said. I'd pay to see the trio version in concert, as they were a solid pop group until the end. I'd pay and buy a T-shirt for the quartet, because they were a VERY good prog band. I'd give a kidney (preferably someone else's) to watch the Classic 5. 4 years together. 4 incredible records. The Genesis quintet belongs with the greatest groups in the history of music. Nice video. Cheers.
I remember seeing the front cover of music magazine (think Sounds) with Gabriel leaves Genesis and I was gutted. Got into Genesis around Selling England… A local band known as Rainbow (changed their name to Pallas cause of Ritchie) and they used to play a lot of Prog Rock, including The Knife from Trespass. Bought all the early records and saw them first live when they toured Trick of the Tail and then Peter when he did his first untitled solo album. Phil was a different front man and he did a great job as they progressed to more mainstream, but always felt that they were better with Steve and of course Peter. That said, they pleased a lot of fans for many years. Well done guys.
@maval4537 I can see where you're coming from. I believe Gabriel & Hackett have always remained friendly, but it looks significant that those 2 appear to sit a little isolated. And I bet Banks is a bit irked that the Genesis threesome era is NOT revered in the same way as the fivesome or even foursome eras
The first time I heard Suppers Ready, my mind opened up to the possibility of music for expression in the format of a 'rock band'. As I am older now, I feel that was actually secondary. Supper's Ready is expressing the divine. Every time, and mean every single time, I hear the end I weep. I mean, you know it, but I have to put it here; Can't you feel our souls ignite? Shedding ever-changing colours In the darkness of the fading night Like the river joins the ocean As the germ in a seed grows We've finally been freed to get back home There's an angel standing in the Sun And he's crying with a loud voice "This is the supper of the mighty one" Lord of lords, king of kings Has returned to lead his children home To take them to the New Jerusalem! That is divine. That is eternal and good.
My greatest appreciation for Genesis, who has shaped my whole life, as a faithful companion in so many beautiful and difficult life situations. Especially Phil, who gave me the “spark” to start playing drums at the age of 14. My first album was Nursery Crime in 1971, but the album I listen to the most to this day is probably Seconds Out Live, which I bought in 1977. So, once again, my biggest thanks for music that is definitely timeless and contains more than one MASTERPIECE! 🎼🎵🎶🎹 🎸🥁❤💖
@Raiiman great love it mate also followed them since the beginning saw them many times in early 70.s and steve 70.s onwards still, today great live and band of musicians
@@WintersWar I've seen tons of his interviews, still don't know what you are talking about. Tony had a little bit of snark in his interview by his OWN record label. Doesn't make them 'not nice'. But since we've never met ANY of these people I dont' think we can take this line too seriously.
A lot of bands have turmoil within the group. Genesis never did. They remained friends for all these years. Best band ever. I miss them. Thanks John for another great interview.
This video is by far in my top 10 of all times to re-watch all over again. I was like catching lightning in a bottle. I truly wished it could be possible to reunite them for once more, maybe for a podcast series to go even deeper into stories they forgot to mention that time.
There's tons of prog interviews out there now. Tony does a long one with his cherry red record label. Steve is ALWAYS doing interviews and about this time. Peter has done some long form ones for various organizations. Ironically Mike does the least, mostly beause he at least was still performing so is just doing the really crappy mainstream media interviews where they ask the same idiotic questions, but he did one with that podcast that that guy from status quo did during the lockdown.
Thanks again for uploading all these interviews John. Musical history with the classic line up in a room together talking about their music. I love how they get along.
I will admit, my heart quaked just a little at the beginning when Peter & Phil stood awkwardly, maybe pointedly, not hugging eachother as everyone exchanged hugs. But every time the camera pulled back to reveal ALL FIVE OF THEM sitting side by side I did a little invisible leap of joy, haha. Fantastic interview! Well done focussing on the creative side--how songs came to be written, how the sound & visual aspects came together etc--rather than typical 'band stories/road to success'. And wow the band dynamics came out immediately, tho obviously passions have mellowed & they're more philosophical about their conflicts now. So much of what you post is...to call it priceless isn't an exaggeration. Thank you so much for sharing your work here.
@@halcyon289 they're actually the closest friends, as far as I know! the last picture after the last Genesis show backstage, is Peter, Phil and Richard McPhail.
It's possible that Pete and Phil had already done their initial "hug" greeting, off camera and just prior to this bit of filming and were both reluctant to replicate it "just for show".....I mean....I wouldn't do that either if that was the case. So their look of "awkwardness" may just be a mutual "we've already hugged".....and "so long as WE know this, sod what it might look like on the edit"......type thing.
I was so lucky to have been introduced to Genesis aged 16 (now 62) with ‘And then there were three’ album. Went to them live in Bradford aged 17 and have seen them since many times as a band and individually as well. No other band has such talent in all their members like Genesis.
For you thinking there is an issue between peter and phil. Look at Peter eagerly laughing at Phils jokes. Phil and Pete are probably the best friends there
Thanks! Have a pint. Thanks for this. The big guys get all the glory. Genesis was magic, still are, and I think it still befuddles them too how and why that X factor. This body of work of yours and team only reaffirms who they all are and how very un rock they were/are.
Los mayores genio del rock sinfónico ...verlos juntos es un deleite ,su musica es parte de nuestra historia , nuestras fibras sensibles mas profundas. Enhorabuena !!👏 🎉❤
I've seen so many interviews with Peter over the years, and I don't think I've ever seen him break into spontaneous, broad smile laughs. Great to see him happy. Tony's comment, "you're 30 years too late" to Steve was offhand and nasty, and probably speaks to his character.
I think Tony was just being cynical. They all know that he was the cynic in the band. Besides, Tony's a fan of Steve's work. He loves Blood On The Rooftops and he complimented him on Ace Of Wands.
@@aleclewis9123 Interesting . I`ve always been annoyed at Tony`s attitude towards Steve, even if I think the world of him as a keyboardist and a song writer, but to see them both hug at the beginning of this video was a very pleasant surprise. It`s nice to see that they`re not cold to each other.
@@paulcarfantan6688 Despite the disagreements within the band, they really do get along, e.g. Tony went to Steve's 53rd birthday party in 2003. Both of them were even close to re-recording the song The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway for Steve's first Genesis Revisited album. Phil says about Tony and Mike in his autobiography, "Tony and Mike have become more lovable as time goes on, which is the reverse of the traditional rock-band narrative. Tony, formerly rather diffident and difficult to talk to, has become a great friend, funny and witty. He’s a different person, especially with a glass of wine in him. Mike, too, has loosened up." You must remember, Mike, Peter and Tony had stern educational upbringings and Phil came from a drama school, where education was minimal. Steve was also close to leaving the band during the Foxtrot sessions, but Tony and Mike gently sat him down and encouragingly said "we don't want you to leave".
@@aleclewis9123 Very interesting. Re-recording The Lamb would have been something curious to listen to, a bit like their 1999 re-recording of the The Carpet Crawlers. Indeed Tony has mellowed with age which is a good thing and yes that Charterhouse schooling instilled in them a "stiff upper lip" attitude. I remember the three of them saying they were envious of ho Phil could easily joke around and hug someone, since that`s not how you would behave at their school. The last part about Steve is intriguing since I`ve read about eight books in the last 43 years and never heard about him wanting to leave at that time. Good thing they convinced him otherwise, I mean what a guitarist that guy is, such an innovator in multiple guitar sounds. He`s one third of my "Steve trio" of guitarists, along with Howe and Rothery. Cheers.
I always Hoped for a Reunion Tour of GENESIS...But i knew that Peter had his own Solo ideas ..As well as the other band mates...BUT I'm So HAPPY TO HAVE THEIR EPIC ALBUMS..!! LOVE ALL THEIR WORKS...💯💯💯💯💯💜💜💜💜💜🎧🎤🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🥁🥁🥁🎸🎸🥰🥰🥰🥰
Absolutely, Cuckoo Cocoon wouldn`t be the same without it nor the Musical Box or Get em out by Friday or Supper`s Ready. Even the end of The Lamia has a bit of flute. It was a beautiful added element to their songs.
Love watching these videos. Such an interesting interaction between them, real fondness between them and at the same time, feels completely impossible that there could be any musical reunion, even for a live show. Just grew into different people by then so much. Thankful we have what we have! ☺
Blimey! the middle class vs the working class right here. I can't imagine what it was like in the studio for those first few albums after Ant Phillips left and Steve joined. 2 working class oiks against 3 middle class prefects.. still, that qualifies as a fair fight in my book. These five guys had the most profound musical effect on me since The Beatles. The Lamb was already 4 years old when I first heard it as a 16 year old punky type, and it very quickly became my "play every day" album, often twice a day. I didn't know music like that existed, which honestly, before that, I don't think it did. It literally knocked everything else music wise out of my life for a long time. I used to walk around the wintry streets with it playing in my head. The story too, with my leather jacket zipped up against the icy cold wind, just like Rael. I learned to play guitar with this album 40 years ago but I still can't play like (or sound anything like) Steve Hackett. "Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist".... OK, I give up, here's my guitar, amp, strap and fuzz box, I can't do it like him. And as for keyboards... FUHGEDDABOUDIT!! I sold most of them when I understood what being a genius meant (step forward and take a bow, Mr. A. Banks) Great band, copied by a few (early Marillion with Fish was ok) but never ever equaled in my opinion. But hey Guys... Always remember... "Undinal songs urge the sailors on Till lured by the sirens' cry..." Yeah... I know... I know... Thanks for the film @John Edginton 🙂
Think your way through Nursery Cryme or Selling England by the Pound and give me a quick summary please, it up there with ELP and Wakeman futility for me !?
@@DaveSCameron Futile.....100% not, complex songs that take you on a journey, unusual lyrics, constantly evolving music, brilliant / different styles of composition, totally unique sound..... Genesis is definitely not futile.
LEGGENDARI !!!
I gonna write in portuguse. Genesis foi uma banda completamente diferente de todas do rock progressivo. Mesmo para os não britanicos eles conseguiram levar momentos sublimes a todos ...tardes de sábado, sons no carto, nem quero falar mais nada. Fazem parte da minha vida.
I am quite amazed that you made these great musicians sit on these crappy chairs for the entire interview.. especially Phil with his spinal injury (notice him moving uncomfortably). Otherwise, great interview!
I agree. I wince every time I see those chairs ! I like to think it was the producer who chose them out of cheapness (: .. why didn’t I say something? God knows! Bad decision on a stressful day. 😩
Being fluent in English but not a native speaker, for some reason I find Peter, Steve and Phil's utterances a lot easier to understand than Mike and Tony's. The latter sound to me as if they're somehow muttering and mumbling the words as they go along. I wonder why they come across to me differently from the other three...
No wonder the five Geniuses didnt go many years together to much Talent and ideas. Personally i prefer the Gabriel years. But Phil done Amazing. The Guys were a True Super group
One day God ( Lord of lords, King of kings ) said : " I absolutely have to do something to improve music , i'm sick and tired of "three chords' songs " ,so i'll do my best to let these five artists may meet each other to create immortal music ( then people would have called this music " progressive rock ! ). So He took his children home ( Richard McPhail's cottage ) and they begun to write the legend we all know.
Does anyone close to Phil know the answer ? My google translate of this - Hello everyone...does anyone know how Phil's health is??? I hope he is well 🙏 greetings from Buenos Aires GENESIS FOR EVER !!
Brilliant as usual John what a treasure - warts, awkwardness and all. Any more of the Roy Harper interview or was it just in relation to the Have a cigar episode? Great work either way.
15.45 re: impenetrable words / lyrics. Peter: "I blame Tony for those" Tony "We did alright considering" Like little boys squabbling, but endearing all the same.
The only way this could have been better setlist: 1. Had Mike not published his book yet and halfway through the interview said "like in the eighties when I was doing coke..." 2. Had Phil said "Yes, yes I wanted Pete and his crazy getups out of the band so I could take over and sing dammit" 3. Had Steve said "it was hard for me to keep up, they are all such brilliant writers.....complete ass^%$#@ but brilliant writers" 4. Had Peter and Tony for twenty minutes resumed the argument of who stole whose protractor. 5. Had Ray Wilson stormed in: "&^%$ you, &^%$ all of you, I'm out of the band. See how it feels?" 6. Had Anthony Phillips showed up with "I've brought some tea"
John, something I have wondered watching all of these (which are great, thank you so much for posting the full versions!) ... did you give much thought to the seating arrangement? It seems perfectly thought-out, with Tony and Peter together (because that is the most important relationship and the one that has never resolved), Steve to the side because he's a quiet guy and would cause a hole if placed in the middle, Phil on the other side because he has the energy and can bridge the love gap all the way over to Peter and Steve... etc. Or was it kind of spontaneous?
I think there was an idea based on the original three who kicked off this filmed conversation first. They sat together and then were joined by Phil and Steve
@@CommuneRecords I agree with another comment, it looks like most of the friction is Peter and Phil. They look at each other to hug like everybody else, then look away, then Peter looks at Phil again to see what he's going to do, and they are the only ones that dont hug. I'm not exactly sure though what people think needs to be 'resolved'. One thing about getting old is you realize for the most part just how dumb you were when young and most of the things you did you likely can't really explain. Tony pretty much admits here he was an asshat, he's said that before, and from all accounts from people aroudn the group he's mellowed more than most. Its got to be a little bit of a hit to pride that his solo career wasn't as successful, he and the others keep talking about it, which is odd because popularity has never equalled quality. Peters most successful albums are most certainly his least interesting ones. Phil did far better work with Brand X than his solo albums. All over youtube you see fans and critics and other members of Genesis saying how brilliant an album Smallcreeps day is, yet Mike hardly even acknowledges it. But on rewatching this they do all seem very nervous before starting, and of course we still notice there is SOME editing done here. Granted, I critique it like a performance because I don't know any other way. I'm not about to do as somebody else did and base criticisms on their posture.
@@mikearchibald744 Odd because Phil and Peter have (seemingly) real respect for one another not just based on old times. It looks like Steve has come out as the hug-gy one and is hugging everybody. Phil is pretty hug-gy too and gets through to his old bandmates. But somehow the Peter-Phil thing is awkward for a moment, and then it's too late. I didn't notice any actual friction between Peter and Phil, just maybe an awkwardness. Interesting to dissect a few seconds! Totally agree with the rest of your comment (though I don't like Smallcreep's Day myself).
@@CommuneRecords To be honest I haven't listened to Small creeps day, but hear ALL the guys related to Genesis raving about it. But yeah, and stuff like that is hard to figure because its spur of the moment, you never know, they may have just had a conversation before and this meant nothing. As i've said before they dont have a LOT of drama, but even pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have REUNITED. After 1983 thats never happened, and it looks like Pete has always been the holdout. I would think the main grief would be with Tony, but these british guys are pretty good with the stiff upper lip. The only other thing that gives me pause is the other Phil solo interview where Phil is talking about how he didn't waht Petes job and Phil says "Pete might say 'for fucks sake leave it alone' ". Pete is the guy who I really can't imagie getting angry, but he out and out admits how stubborn and cantakerous he can be, so we should believe him. But all those hugs seemed a little showy. I'm not a huggy person, but when I hug, people feel it:) Steve and Tony barely hug, but I think MOST of these realize just how long ago the past is. But on rewatching the beginning I'm struck with how nervous they all seem to be at the FIVE of them being there, when they don't when there is three. And I think thats all rehashing the Pete and Steve stories which likely like Pink Floyd says "we dealt with it by ignoring it..the british way". In hindsight what would be ideal is to see PAIRS of them in interviews on the albums.
"Willow Farm" is the only piece I love from Supper's ready. I never liked the song in its entirety. But I do love "The Battle Of Epping Forest" And "Firth Of Fifth" of course.
Saw the whole thing, poor Steve, they never mentioned his solo work, band went way downhill when he left, they used to play music, then they just played songs
@@raymondvaughan6262 I saw Steve with Genesis revisited he is humble and incredibly talented. He works all the time in the creative process of his music.I get the feeling he treats his band members with great respect not like some other members of Genesis.
They all respect him😊. Tony is happy that Steve keeps the music of the band alive. This doc was from the BBC, very official. Peter and Phil are the most successfull in terms of sales and cultural impact. But I think, John here, does Steve justice in giving us more Steve time with the band and alone. Better than the official BBC version. I agreed that Steve, but also Mike and Tony deserves more time for their body of work. It is a Genesis doc anyway, so its logical that we dont talk about his solo work. Even Peter Gabriel - they shouldnt mention him after the one off concert in 1982. Yes they should mention that GTR, Pete and Genesis all had big hits in 1986. And Peter success was always compared with Genesis. Because he was a major star in the 80s. Eventually you can bring Steve, Pete and the others for the Archives project in the 90s. Also, I think, it wouldnt be "déplacé" talk about Genesis Revisited project. It eould have been a full circle him since Steve didnt played Genesis songs in the 80s. I really am a fan of Johns re-editing. Bravo again and again😂
The body language speaks volumes at the beginning, of course. With Tony visibly leaning away from Peter... I'd have like to see the three separated by Peter and Steve. But I guess that would've made them (more) uncomfortable in a situation that was already (potentially) public-school-style-uncomfortable enough 😂 it's odd that Phil, the cheeky chappie, appears to be the most closed off body language wise. Steve really is in the Banks-wilderness. Does Tony meet Steve's eyes ever?
