That mod is no doubt a must get. I installed this onto my Model 2 Sega MegaDrive. The colours looks phenomenal. The audio improvement blew me away and sounded absolutely incredible, Possibly way better than the Model 1 in my books. This mod was easy to follow. Good work on here with yours.
I'm glad you're going through with TBP installs on different motherboard revisions, because even still, there's still so many revisions that have no video tutorials, and sometimes info isn't consistent between installs. Hoping you continue to fill those gaps for other genesis revisions!
Thanks, I really appreciate that! I plan to keep making these TBP videos because finding clear documentation for this mod is difficult. And I’m a huge fan of your channel as well, thanks for all that you do in the speedrunning community!
@@LIRetroGaming Hey thanks, glad you enjoy my runs! But yeah, I've been messing with mods since I've recently changed over to RGB stuff, so I've been doing my own recaps and mod installations. Decided to get a broken Genesis lot to practice TBP installations on, since they're pretty cheap consoles, and seems like a good way to practice since if I mess up, I didn't lose a rare console lol. I ended up using your guide for a VA1 G3 I fixed (bad caps), then ended up with a VA2 G3 and had referenced the Mega amp thread, RetroRGB's site, and random twitter posts that all had different preferences on what components to remove, which just added to the confusion lol. I did end up getting it installed fine, but it would be nice to know why there's inconsistencies like that between installs lol.
That's exactly the same problem I have with the TBP installs - you have to hunt for info on twitter and other sites and the info is confusing or missing altogether. That's why I will eventually have videos of all the different models, to demonstrate a successful install. In general I always use the mega amp thread for the info on disconnecting all the audio channels, and lifting pins on the Sony CXA chip to sever RGB. I'll probably film a TBP on a Model 1 next, since there are a few differences with RGB on that console!
I've been avoiding this for a while now. There are so many models of the Genesis, all with their own issues and strengths, that even knowing what problems there are to solve, and whether those solutions create other problems, is kind of daunting.
@@LIRetroGaming Heya so, I ended up doing a couple more TBP installs on VA0, VA1, and VA1.8 model 2's. I had one issue with the VA1 where I installed the TBP, and would only get green. I traced it from the VDP all the way back to the TBP, and no traces are cut on the TBP itself anywhere on those RGB paths. I would randomly also get the screen being completely dark with only "shadows" showing up. I ended up swapping out the TBP board itself with another one, and the issue was completely gone and the VA1 is great. The VA0 was completely headache free and worked first try too. Fast forward to now, I've run into the same problem on this VA1.8 where now I only got red/green on the screen and no blue. I did the same tracing from the VDP back to the TBP board, and ended up reflowing some stuff on the TBP (and even replaced the THS7374), and I got those "shadows" on screen again and it was stuck like that. I decided to do the same thing as last time and swap the whole TBP off with another one, and this time I got immediate shadows again, which was really disappointing. I swapped it out with a 3rd TBP board I have, and now I get only red lol. I swapped the THS7374 (again) and now I got shadows, yet again. Would you have any ideas on what on earth is causing this? I thought I was getting the hang of installing these, but this Genesis is making me think otherwise :/
I had one of these, and I also had a Mac Plus, both of which were basically hand-me-downs from my mom's wealthier friends. I was surprised to learn that they actually both used the same CPU!! :O The Genesis was a TINY fraction of the cost of a Mac Classic or a Mac Plus! The CPU used in the genesis was actually very powerful for a console of its day.
Had the exact same crack in the solder on the power input of my Model 2. Swapped it for a new jack, as well as the DIN, while I was in there. With HD Retrovision component cables and the Retrotink 2x, the picture is amazing!
Thank you for making this video. It was essential this weekend as I attempted this with a Model2 VA1.8. This is one of the few good sources of information on this mod.
Excellent video, really great method to remove the caps. I always enjoy watching videos like yours where you take it clean it up and make it better than ever! Liked and subscribed.
Yes it’s definitely challenging on the Genesis model two. Not all Sega consoles are this bad but whenever I see the pads on one side I always take it carefully and slow
i hate to be negative cause i love your videos. it seems like more and more you leave out the small details of the install leaving a user following the video live that leaves us scratching out head and looking else where to finish it off. the part you speed through is important also, although boring id rather the points be highlighted or atleast zoomed in on.
That’s fair. I have to remember that some of these steps might be boring for me but they might be totally new for a beginner. I’ll try to remember that when I’m making new videos
love the channel. I would put Model 2 in your video title, since the job is very different from the Model 1. I know it's in the decription, but not easy to tell from the title.
You should call yourself a doc now since you did a good job with that triple bypass mouhahahahah. great video. Would love to know where you get your caps from.
Thanks for this nice tutorial! Do you think that composite video out on a 32X would still work after doing this bypass to the Genesis? I understand it won't work directly from the Genesis console's multi-out, but i think that the RGB signal will pass fine to the 32X. My understanding is that 32X takes the RGB signal and converts it to composite internally.
You need one of those microscopes like what Louis Rossmann has when he repairs macbooks on RU-vid. Great video! Would you consider the Model 2 better than or equal to the OG Genesis?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I really like the model too and I think that once you add the triple bypass to it it’s just as phenomenal as the model one. Personally I own both versions because I’m a huge Sega fan
I don't have the video issues, I live in the UK and we have RGB euro SCART for all SEGA consoles that we connect to a monitor or TV, crisp 240p image (on Mega Drive and Master System) that looks fantastic on most CRT TV's it also looks good on a LCD or LED. But the United States only got S-video, composite or RF... Different in Europe.
That is correct, although the Genesis does have RGB available we never had cables or connectors to utilize that video mode. Nice to have these options nowadays in North America
I am doing this same mod and I am very excited to do so in a few days! Are you using HDRetrovision cables along with this mod? I heard that the triple bypass mod removies composite video cable functionality, and I was wondering if I needed to get them to have the results you gained as well?
This mod has the option to remove composite, but in this video I left composite video intact. It’s compatible with the HDretro cables and also with RGB cables as well, so you should be all set!
Great job, your tips are very useful, thank you. Btw, I want to ask you or anyone else with experience for advice. I have Genesis2 VA0 and VA1 both consoles, also the Japanese MD2 VA1. I have not noticed any audio/video issues (cracks, loudness or distorsion) with RAD2X to hdmi adapter. But I`m very interested to know if "3BP" will dramatically upgrade the performance of audio/video in this case, and also if it would be compatible with RAD2X. If yes, then I will probably get it for all 3 of my consoles. Thanks in advance, cheers!
Hello LIRG, very good video as always I'm getting much and much more into modding retro consoles, and this seems like a intermediate level mod for me, I recently acquired this very same model of genesis myself, seeing your videos I'm prone to buy and install this Triple bypass mod for my console. Sorry for the barrage of questions that come as follows : @14:45, do you happen to know the model solder tip of the hakko, is that fx888d model station? I need a small thin tip as the one you display in that specific part, because I struggle a lot with a wider tip I have on my fx-888d. @same minute mark What model of jumper cable and awg caliber you use? this looks like a sturdy cable, well suited for this mods, I like that the plastic coating is thick, personally I ordered some 30 AWG but I'm not quite pleased with it, it seems very frail, also I see voultar uses the same caliber and maybe the same brand? of jumper cables you use care to share? @same minute mark I see you put the music x68000 in the description, can I have which song is that specifically, or at least the game, so I can search it..... It's soooo soothing and pleasing.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Here are some answers to those questions. I use the T18-D16 soldering tip for most of my work but occasionally I use that smaller tip for some applications. Unfortunately I can't remember the model number of that one. Normally I use 28 gauge copper stranded wire for my installs, although 30 gauge is also useful on occasion. Something like this: www.amazon.com/Pc-Accessories-Connectors-Connector-10P-15FT/dp/B073W9R4R3/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2AV4JEWJ1OHXO&keywords=28+gauge+rainbow+wire&qid=1642788969&s=industrial&sprefix=28+gauge+rainbow+wire%2Cindustrial%2C67&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A64W1E1ZZHST0&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE2QzlOU1k0QlFKMEUmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA5Nzg0MzUzSk9VMDFLTlcwRDVUJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA1ODc2MTQzU0FRNVJYNE42TFU4JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== Lastly that song is called Uranus and it's from the game Spindizzy II on the Sharp X68000. There are some examples of it that you can find on RU-vid.
Recently acquired this same model genesis and a crt, really excited to do this mod. While I do have hd retrovision cables my crt only has composite/s-video inputs. Can I do an s-video mod along with the triple bypass?
What kind of cable or setup are you using to plug it into your LCD tv? Are you using some fancy cable plus some other adaper before it gets to your tv?
I’m using HD Retro vision component cables and from there I send it to a scaler called the OSSC that Converts the video signal to 720 P without any lag
Yes it should be the same for the European model. The jumpers are actually on the back of the PCB so all you have to do is look at that before closing up all the jumpers
i've got a model 1 that doesn't have that splash at the beginning when you power it on, very nice find.. but it definitely needs new caps. the sound is horrifyingly distorted and there's jail bars. might do a vid down the line of how bad it can get as a before/after. on a side note, i miss my sega CD and 32x, both destroyed by cat piss.
That’s correct. Here we can use hd retrovision cables to connect directly to a CRT, or we can use the same European RGB cables and connect them to a scaler like the retrotink5x
Im having insane audio buzzing sounds with hd retrovision component cables unless I unplug the white wire. It was happening before I installed this triple bypass also. Anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Maybe I missed it but what was the solution to the stuck reset button? Was that just a dirty button area on the case top or spring or was there an issue with the button membrane?
Got a VA1 Model 2 as my main Sega Genesis, audio was so horrid before I installed a Triple Bypass (heavy distortion that was very noticeable on the Streets of Rage 2 intro, and on the Jurassic Park Title screen) Those LM324 OpAmps are the absolute WORST on these Genesis consoles.
@@LIRetroGaming thank you it comes in today and I'm going to try to mod it using your video (I also have a VA1) going to have to skip replacing the caps but I'll eventually get back in there and redo them. I'm also going to run some composite video tests a lot of people say that it disables composite videos so I'm going to actually check and check RF.
I do both! I have systems for sale that are already modded, and then of course you can also send me your consoles to have mods installed. You can find me at 1uprestorations.com
@@LIRetroGaming it would probably help alot in the through hole vias and it would have been better for the joints of that power jack to wick away some of that old solder before introducing more. To each their own though.
@@toxicavenger6172 came here to ask this lol. Watching him have trouble getting the solder to flow was a tiny bit painful lol. There's never a reason not to use flux whatsoever, it just makes your life easier no matter the project.
