It's now 2023, and I am very pleased to inform this video that genetic mosquito engineering has been a success in many countries, and I have visited one called "Singapore". This country uses Project Wolbachia, a name they came up with for a project, in which they released thousands of genetically modified male mosquitoes into the surroundings to mate with female mosquitoes and produce harmless offspring. Some versions of the modified mosquitoes completely block off the birth of female mosquitoes by killing them even before they turn into adults. As a result, more male mosquitoes are hatching than female mosquitoes and dengue cases in Singapore are going down rapidly. I am proud of this country and every country in the world that has tried this genetic mosquito project. This might just be what we all need to overcome malaria, dengue, zika and many other diseases mosquitoes have brought horror upon in this world.

the problem is that an "enclosed environment" large enough to properly model it would be huge, costly, take years, and possibly not be accurate because of the lack of other factors like actual humans to bite (and use to spread the disease) among other things. (you can't put humans in there because they would die. putting this here because inevitably somebody will say "well then just put those other factors in")

they know the parasite can adapt. the problem is how fast the imune population will spread and how fast the parasite will adapt. its like a roulette, you can make a estimation, but there is no way to be sure. maybe the numbers will say that the estimate time of the imune population become dominant is higher than the probability of the parasite mutate, but then the improbable happen and one single parasite end up adapting just before the old population is eradicated and suddenly all effort is in vain

Thats not the case Anti-GMO supporters dislike the process, because GMO is reletivily new, so we don't know the effects of a long term "GMO-heavy society." I personally think there is far more to gain with GMO than without it, especially with food. There is no way we can feed a population of over 7 billion people with natural methods of cultivating food, GMO makes plants far more resistant to weather and that lets them grow in more environments and seasons. But we don't know how this effects the ecosystem in the long run. Both sides have good points, its not like one side is blatantly retarded.

@theporcupine9993
@theporcupine9993 7 лет назад
+Mitchell Anthony the question is not wether we should try it or not. the question is when shoukd we use it and is it ready to use, is more research needed ? the fact that we already set off a nuke is a bad argument and false reasoning. its nog because bad things happened we should continue doing things recklessly.
@miklosgergelymorandini2340

Your parallel examples fall short in the nature that using a hammer or a nuke is a one time event. Whereas if we introduce this new genome to the genepool it will be self-replicating, and expanding. And we cannot know for sure WHAT will happen exactly.

Which is awesome but also it means that before we completely agree or disagree, we should be educating ourselves more. EXACTLY! I've read up about CRISPR, but my input should never have any real weight on the debate to use or not use it. Only qualified (let me repeat that, QUALIFIED) scientists should decide. I say that because there's a lot of bad science going on out there (check John Oliver's report on scientific research).
@Squidward558

I have to disagree. Scientists used to universally agree on some very stupid and harmful things, and many still do. I live in a place where there are dengue mosquitoes (Amazonas, Peru) and it's very annoying to live every single day being afraid of getting bitten by an infected mosquitoe

Mario says: This technology could be used for dangerous purposes, if used unethically or in a incorrect matter it could present many new problems to our ecosystem, it might turn out worse for the people we’re trying to protect. Luigi says: If he can fly he can die!

Hello, even if used for this purpose has some danger. This has to be applied together with the education of the population, especially those living in tropical forests. For the planet's population is increasing even with fatal diseases. Without them people have to know how to use contraceptive methods. Otherwise the population will grow at a faster rate.

I remember the day when my school went on a field trip to a national health institute and we went to a place where they had mosquitoes. There were two rooms each keeping one type of mosquito and a graph between them showing the growth of mosquitoes. Anyways, we went to the second room and I saw some mosquito eggs laying straight on the water, remembering what I saw from the graph I asked one of the doctors the following: "Are these malaria mosquitoes?" "Yes." "Oh. Thanks for the terrifying news *chuckles in fear*" (we were wearing a suit with a mask and gloves so it wasn't that much of a problem)

Exactly, mosquitoes don't kill anyone, only their pathogenic payload does. The only kind of person this would hurt would be someone who can't make additional blood, which would always result in a miscarriage anyway.

All religons are "religons of peace." No religions are peaceful. If there are super insane followers of any religon, they will do harm. (Islam just has the most insane people)
