Genie Boom Lift REVISITED! -Part 3 (Michigan)

The second diagnostic call on the way to Chicago is a familiar machine: the 1992 Genie Boom lift, that my friend Vladimir and I took a look at coming back from Montana a couple weeks ago.
Last time we addressed a no-start complaint, and then a start-run-stall.
Now, the customer says that it runs fine from the ground controls, but when the controls are switched to "platform mode" it stalls out! Oh boy...here we go again!
In Part 3 Vlad and I work through the wiring mess.
For the "grand finale" in Part 4 we will install Vlad's custom throttle controller to get this old Genie running 100%. Stay Tuned!
Enjoy!
Ivan

Great video. I love the fact that you never give up even in the face of undocumented "custom" wiring. I enjoy your channel more than any reality TV show I've seen. Good sense of drama without the commercial breaks.

good job ! I have over 30 years of doing this . Very difficult for most mechanics. Must know electronics or disaster will occur I had to pin out all conductors in long harness from basket control down many times it shorts out in bends of wiring or tray. Cranes have similar issues. Most give up and sell machine. Good job . New machines are very sophisticated but have scanners and error codes. JLG has good tech. support.

Further down the rabbit's hole. You are certainly getting it sorted out though! I encourage making sure the level saftey is enabled, or if the switch is verified defective a replacement ordered. I'm sure there are some videos of guys trying to ride the basket down as the machine tips. It is a violent ride. When you are in the basket working on something it is just too easy to stop thinking about what the machine is doing. Looking good, your persistence is always present.

This wiring mess reminds me of a story my dad told me about my mom's Karmen Ghia back in the day - my dad and grandfather said they pulled 300 miles of wiring out that didn't start or end anywhere, LOL! Mystery wire! Proof right here that persistence pays off! What a battle! Imagine if those black wires had NO labels?!?! Would need some 30' long meter leads and LOTS of patience!

Good to see you use logical thinking to get this thing going again and hopefully owner will fix other safety items with it. Why is it that some folks think they need to mangle a machine's wiring in an attempt to fix it? I can't count the number of times I have run across this on various pieces of equipment, including cars. Then it takes an intrepid tech like Ivan to try and fix all the problems the previous 'fixes' have caused before finally getting to the original problem. I am glad I no longer have to clean up other folk's messes like this. I've had my fill.

Very well done, Ivan and Vlad. You lost me a few times during your testing but i think i got the idea, well almost. Looks like you're getting your hands slapped however. Safety third, right. Better call the "Genie Police". The rectangular aluminum box you said you didn't know what it was is the voltage regulator for the charging system. Typical older Ford stuff.

It seems that whomever did the rewiring of the boom control lost their way. That unused wire with the diode was probably intended to be used exactly as you ended up using it. I think that person just got frustrated with an error and "made it work". Sometimes you just have to walk away, then come back and recheck your work with fresh eyes. A repair person working on a job site and under time constraint can fall into this trap very easily.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 7 лет назад
My question is: why replace the ENTIRE wiring harness to begin with?!? So many chances to build in errors, as demonstrated here ;)
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 7 лет назад
looks like they added the relay to take the load off the long wiring to platform, probably a voltage drop issue before they rewired it and never finished or someone else yanked it off relay. alternately, they had the relay in place of the diode :) waiting to see Ivan get stuck on the roof or up in the platform, lol :)

i dream of genie with the messed up wiring. lol the cabling usually breaks on those from extending and retracting the boom over time. someone was too cheap to buy the right cable. the level sensor will slow the hydraulic functions if the base machine is off level by 12 -15 degrees. it should at somewhere around 20 degrees cut the motor and only allow lowering function there after. if you do some math a 300 lb load extended out 60 foot from center............... .

So, sometimes the cost in troubleshooting and repairing that equipment isn't worth the time and headache. If you can effectively do it without another recourse hammer it out man get some! many of these jobs become those return nightmares as technicians we all cringe at now something else isn't working that's when I drop the multimeter in the tank with the schematics and walk away LOL!

Ivan, I'm sure you could add to the repertoire of PHAD with all legitimacy after sorting out this chooks nest of wiring. I would write on the receipt to cover yourself ( in the unfortunate event of an accident) that the machine should not be used until all safety devices installed by the manufacturer are working correctly. You can't be too careful. After all, and I may be jumped on for saying this, but the US is renowned for ambulance chasing lawyers looking to sue for a buck. Now for the grand finale!

I didn't know it had propane. If the regulator works, you can just run off propane and that will eliminate the rusty tank and carburetor issues completely, because the propane bypasses all that old junk. I would certainly just use propane and forget about that carbureted fuel system. Propane is way more reliable and clean burning. That old thing has trouble starting unless you buy non-ethanol fuel. They switched over to plastic fuel tanks for a reason I think, not just because it's cheaper. Old cars and trucks with galvanized tanks and carburetors have many issues, and brand new galvanized gas tanks from JC Whitney rust in 6 months! That Genie Boom Lift reminds me of my old Jaguar. Every time you drive it, you had to work on it. As far as adding a transistor / relay, I don't think that a simple circuit will work in the long term. Might better rethink that one. Most all circuits are more complex for circuit protection.
@satamanschmidt3428
@satamanschmidt3428 7 лет назад
Propane is ALWAYS the right choice. My dad was a machinist at H. J. Heinz in Pittsburgh, my home town. One day he came home and told me that his job that day was to tear down a fork lift from the 1940's and rebuild it if necessary. When he tore down the engine it looked like new although it had been run non-stop since WWII. This happened in 1985. Pretty impressive. Propane burns so clean that IC engines can run forever on it.

I repeat again THERE IS A LOT OF MACHINES FOUND IN DITCHES THAT SHOULD BE LEFT IN DITCHES. A repair Tech has to consider the consequences of repairing junk. Majority of owners believe that everything is Hunky Dorey when it's repaired and dont realize the hazards involved or else are not bothered about other people's safety.

Max Morrow obviously they are doing what they can with what they have to work with. Certainly anyone safety minded would agree that this machine needs a lot more work before it can be put into service. Ivan can only do what the owner wants done. The correct posture otherwise is to refuse service. Is that what you would have recommend? If so you wouldn't be the first. I'd like to think I would have if I was in that situation. Maybe figure it out as they have done, then disable it until it's fixed right.

You become criminally liable for modifications you make if someone is hurt or killed. If it was a friend asking for the repair I would buy the level switch and install it at no charge. I have walked off the job when asked to make these types of safety bypasses.
