Genie Wall Mount Garage Door Opener Model 6170 | Unboxing | Install Review 

Was contemplating replacing my screw drive Genie with one of these wall mount openers. After watching this AMAZING install video I'm heading to Amazon to order one of these NOW!! Thanks SO MUCH for a FANTASTIC video and an aboslutely professional install!!

New tech here. I’m be installing one of these for the first time tomorrow and I appreciate the approach you took in this video. You took the time to be thorough and you don’t waste a bunch of the video rambling on like so many other people do on RU-vid.

Fantastic video. I love installing this motor. It's a dealer installers delight. Just the fact the wall button is bluetooth is a great benefit. I hope to have my review video of this motor next week. Great job!

On my side mount installs, I run the emergency release rope through an eye hook and mount the eye hook about 6 inches above the handle. While doing an install, I had a gust of wind come through the garage and it blew the emergency release rope as the door was coming down and the handle got hooked on the stem of the bottom roller. I was lucky and saw it and had the remote in my hand and was able to stop the door.

Just installed mine with your tips. So helpful. One thing about the unit is that I didn’t know it can’t operate online without the Bluetooth light. Too funny.

What an awesome video. You saved me $400 on install charges of 2 openers. I knocked this out in a couple hours. My safe-t beam sensors are not working on one of the units(no lights), but will troubleshoot today. Hopefully the unit is not bad. Everything else works...

Installed last week. Works great. Noticed last night 2 things: 1) the button on the wall mount opener flashes blue every few seconds. Not a big deal, but weird. Wish i could turn that off. 2) the wireless ceiling mount LED stays turned on but very very dim. I needed my garage dark and noticed when the light went out, it still had a noticeable glow to it. Not enough to project light onto anything, but again weird and something i wish i could turn off.

Nice motor. Genie for sure put effort into this. I only would like to see them do is if the garage is prewired to send a wired wall button and use the wireless one in conjunction with the wired one so you don’t have to change the battery too much

I like the way you make a pigtail on the cables. Good idea. Afraid you missed the boat on the lock. When it engages what is it locking? Thin air by the looks of it. If someone forces the door open it will be a few inches before the roller hits the lock. It's meant to be installed right above a roller to limit any movement. The motor prevents the drums moving so it can't be lifted with the aid of the springs but a light door such as this one can be lifted as far as the roller. You also fitted the cable tensioners incorrectly. What you did might work until it works it's way free. It's meant to be fitted over the roller shaft. This should not be attempted when the door is down and the cables are under tension. Better to lift the door up, carefully loosen the bottom bracket, fit the tensioner and refit the bracket. I realize you are duty bound to sing the praises of the opener seeing it's a freebie, but if for any reason the door jams and the safety sensor doesn't reverse the opener, the absense of a tension sensor will cause the cables to unravel. Agree with your overall assessment. It looks like a slick neat package. Another advantage it appears to have over the opposition is that you can install a wired wall button which I understand can't be done on the competitor's model.

I like this opener a lot. I especially like the OVH Door version, the infinity 2000.

I would recommend that you charge your lines before hooking up to machine.. it helps speed the flow of electricity thru the system and removes unwanted free floating electrons…

Great video. Interesting machine. Its probably the only Genie I’d ever try. I still like the 8500W though. Have you installed the Chamberlain RJO70 Jackshaft yet?

@ Builder brigade What about the lock? It’s not on the geni site? And the link you have in the description isn’t the right one. It doesn’t come up as a side mount. It shows it as a wall mount.

I ordered one of these for my home. and will be installing this weekend. one thing that confused me was once the door is open all the way how does the machine start it going down. i.e. if i pull the rope on my current opener, the door isnt going to slam down. However i think thats what the cable keeper does, is it starts the downward motion. so it is actually very much necessary. at least thats how im thinking that works. otherwise the bar would just start unraveling the cables.

I just love jackshaft openers, even if they do throw cables sometimes. I'm in love with this opener right now. So many good things i can say about it compared to the 8500w, especially after watching this video At 4:45 do you know what that jumper wire is there for? Also, does your kid do garage doors as well?

Great video, super helpful but I can't for the life of me figure out why when you mounted the opener there was a gap between the collar and the torsion tube and then at the end of the video, that gap disappeared. Check out the gap at 8:27 vs. the gap at 24:55. How did you close the gap? I'm trying to install this same opener so I'm paying close attention to make sure I get it right!

I really want this to work for mine but my tension rod at the ends stick out only about an inch and they also are maybe only 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter. Is there an extension rod or anything I could put on the end of my tension rods that you know of?

Back again. On this install what was the ceiling opening space? It looks like the genie side opener only needs an inch or two above the center of the horizontal spring rod (It looks even almost flush with the top of the spindle).

Having an issue with this opener where it will open and then once it's up, it'll start flashing red and won't come down when I push the button. I would then have to reset it by manually closing the door and then I can open and close it again with the button. Any idea what the problem could be?

when setting up and down limit to door goes up when pressing the down button, and door goes down when pressing the up button. Are the cable drums installed wrong?

Did you move the attachment rod from leftside to rightside or something , unboxing showed the collar going on the leftside, but next frame shows you attaching the collar to the rightside of machine ?

Curious on door position during install. Video shows door in multiple positions after tightening jackshaft coupler. Does the motor freewheel or do you have the pull cord in the released/ lock position?

Would you recommend this over a belt drive for a cleaner look and to be quieter??

Can you stop and start the door at any height / position? Or do you have to pull the emergency cord and do it manually. Sometimes I only like to open the door half way let air through

Very nice, thorough video. Question though - in speaking with a neighbor who had the 6170 installed on his 2 car garage door AND a 6070 installed on the single car garage door, he said that the installer told him that the spring on the two car garage had a Wayne Dalton Tourque Master Plus spring and would need to be changed out (I neglected to ask him what it was changed out to but I will get that info). Not sure if the installer he used just took advantage of my neighbor or, there is some credence to having to know what spring your door opener has and whether or not it will work with the 6170 and 6070. Any thoughts on this???

Installed this opener and all went perfectly, until...it was time to set the down/up limits. One early step in the procedure is to pull the emergency cord to disengage the door from opener. My opener will NOT re-engage. Am I missing how to re-engage? Does it re-engage automatically?

I'm wondering about the electronic lock. They way you have it mounted, couldn't you open the door till it hit the first roller it came in contact with? Appears to by over a foot and then you could get in and open the door all the way.

I just got mine delivered today. I have one question, the instructions say that the bottom of the cable tensioner can be no higher that 4 1/2 inches off the floor. Unfortunately, I have horizontal support braces that stick out pretty far from the face of the door that prevent me from placing the bracket below 6 1/4 inches. From what I see, that would be too high because it would hit the actual drum. How important is the spring tensioner?

Question: I installed mine and it has working fine . About 2 days ago it started glitching, now the red light keeps blinking and it won’t go up or down. Any suggestions?

I think you didn't position the lock right. It's supposed to stop the door from somebody trying to open it manually from outside.

So at first glance, I notice my existing garage door shaft is not nearly as long or wide as yours in the picture. Is there an adapter I can buy to extend it a bit?

My current Genie garage door opener has a light that automatically turns on when the garage door is opened and then turns off after a pre-set time period. Does the light provided with this unit work in a similar manner or does it need to be manually turned on and off?

I wonder why the spring tensioner is needed on a wall mounted but not on a ceiling mounted operator.

Mine is not even a year old and it opens but not close. I need to release a rope and pull it myself every time I want the door close. How can be this issue resolved?

Ordered one of these and had it installed by a professional, it seems to work fine but I notice the machine wobbles a bit from side to side as the door opens / closes. Is that normal or was it mounted incorrectly?

Your lock is not in the correct location, the needs to be on top of one of the wheels/roller You have it in such a manner you could lift the open.

Had a Craftsman that lasted 15 years ( only replaced because it was loud ) Installed a Genie ( $200+ ) around 5 years ago ( Whisper quiet ) Lasted about 3 years.. I I was impressed with the noise reduction... Not impressed with reliability & customer service ( They kept giving me the run around about motor replacement approval when i wasn't getting disconnected by them randomly ) after 45+ minutes of this i just stopped calling back to be placed on hold and disconnected again!

Your lock needs to be set above a roller otherwise it’s just decoration
