+Gaile Oxstain Yes. Birds (and reptiles and fish) are, per brain mass, smarter than most mammals (outliers excluded; ravens, crocodilians, monitor lizards, great whites, killer whales, elephants, and humans are above the average for their group.)

One of the main characters in Charles Dickens's novel Barnaby Rudge is a talking, intelligent raven. I got to this page after googling this fact. Spent some time at the Tower of London, but the ravens there are probably above talking to tourists. Their forefathers fraternized with kings and queens.

Very, very smart. The closest cousins of dinosaurs, the crocs, are also smart enough to use tools. In other words, quite a few non-avian dinosaurs were smart enough to use tools.

Once when bike riding at Shark Valley in the Everglades I left my bike at the bicycle rack to walk up the viewing tower, on my return I noticed my bike bag had been opened my lunch and car keys were missing! I then realized that a very curious crow was eating my lunch on a nearby table and my car keys were right next to him! I thought it was hilarious! Beware of the ravens in Everglades National Park!

Birds near resturaunts with outdoor tables have figured that there is sugur inside the sugar packages, and they steal them when nobody is around and take them to a tree and tear open the bags using it's beak. Amazed me when I saw it.

I'm a big fan of Bernd Heinrich, he wrote an excellent book on ravens called "Mind of the Raven". He also wrote another great book about ultra marathon running called "Why we Run". In 1981, at the age of 41 he won a 100km (60 mile) ultra marathon race in Chicago. You gotta admire that.

"They couldn't have learned it, because I didn't train them." Seems like they still could have learned it on their own. Isn't that what "intellegence" is? I would love to see video of what the ravens did the very first time they were presented with the puzzle, to watch how they learned it.

A traditional Malay story features a raven trapped in a drought. It comes across a glass bottle that's stored some water at the bottom., but the raven can't reach into it far enough with its beak to drink it. So it looks around for pebbles, fills up the bottle with them until the water level reaches the top. The Raven then has easy access to the water and drinks it. Doesn't sound so far fetched now...

once in a finnish zoo, raven named elvis was all alone in a large round cage, sitting on a tree. The zoo was quite empty, and when He saw us, it flew straight to us. When we circled the cage, he followed. When we inserted a stick trough the cage, he retrieved it soon. When one of us got hand close to get it back, Elvis suddenly pecked the approachers fingers. Raven fooled human! When we threw a coin to cage, it retrieved it as well. When we finally left him alone, he started to scream sadly:/

Every animal on our beautiful Earth is a genius. Their species have survived for millions of years if not tens of millions. Sure, they weren't natures genetic "genius" winners as humanity is, but goodness they share so much of our intelligence, like language and sociality. We must never undermind animals and think of them as insignificant. Evidence is everywhere, and after all we are all nature's creatures
@Clarachk

Yes. There was an experiment where the scientists put a small basket of food into a tube, so that the raven couldn't reach it with its beak. But the raven took a wire, left in the cage by the scientists, and shaped it into a hook. It then used the hook to draw the basket out of the tube.

Ah. You are referring to the book "Darwin's Black Box", written by Michael Behe and published in 1996. That decade old argument was refuted years ago my friend. The flagellum is reducible. You can find examples in nature, such as the "type III secretory system" which is found in a variety of bacteria. It works fine without the other pieces needed to make up the "irreducibly complex" flagellum.
@dafttool

OK, I perfectly agree that Ravens are intelligent for birds, BUT hiding their food & pretending to hide their food are also what squirrels do, and NOBODY would argue that they are intelligent. I know it was just given as an illustrative example of their brain power; it was just a poor one.

According to Autocaption, crows and ravens are "posing grievance". And among the smartest invariants, though at :40, they're "fascinating variants". Mixed enough message, without "bird" also being translated as "Greenwood" and "parent". Is it that complex a word? Also, when he ENUNCIATES "play", Autocaption hears "alone". That's sad. But ravens are cool.

I would argue that if a lion eats an antilope on a tree, some bits of meat would fall and get stuck in thin branches that are similar to strings. Ravens would need to pull these branches to eat the meat and it would take hundreds of years enough to evolve an instinct of pulling strings. Evolution isn't planned as most people think, a string in the wild could appear anywhere. Besides, what if humans made these experiments over and over throughout the decades enough or Ravens to learn these tricks

@ronbronb They're reaching/(exceeded some) mammal-like intelligence. They figured it out by themselves, sort of like how an octopus can open a jar to reach its food. Evolution allowed for the raven to acquire such a brain, but the raven itself learned to use it.

Sometimes when thngs evolve, they split and take different paths of evolution, and then some hardly change at all over time. No ones saying All dinosaurs evolved into birds, just a certian few. So if you think of it that way, its extremely possible.
